Mid-Autumn Festival cards are a thoughtful, optional way to share seasonal wishes—not a custom that every celebrant observes. The festival falls on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, so its Gregorian date changes each year. A card can draw on widely recognized themes such as the full moon, family reunion, mooncakes, lanterns, and gratitude, while leaving room for the different ways communities celebrate.
What is the Mid-Autumn Festival?
Mid-Autumn Festival is observed on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month. Taiwan’s official 2026 calendar lists it as a one-day holiday; holiday schedules differ by location. Because the festival follows the lunar calendar, its Gregorian date changes from year to year. Taiwan’s Directorate-General of Personnel Administration provides the date and holiday information, while Canadian Heritage’s September 25, 2026 statement describes the festival’s association with the full moon, harvest, family reunions, and gratitude, and notes that celebrations vary by community.

That shared seasonal imagery makes the festival a natural subject for greeting cards, but the evidence does not establish card-giving as a universal or historically central festival practice. Think of a card as a contemporary way to send a personal wish, rather than a required part of the observance.
What to put on a Mid-Autumn Festival card
Choose imagery and wording that feel warm and seasonal without implying that one community’s customs represent everyone. Broadly recognizable choices in the sources include the moon, mooncakes, lanterns, family gatherings, and wishes for togetherness or gratitude.

Moon and moonlight
A full moon makes a simple focal point for a painted or printed design. Pair it with a short wish for a peaceful festival or a happy reunion. If you are making a card, a restrained palette and open space around the moon can keep the message legible and the image calm.
Mooncakes, tea, and seasonal details
Mooncakes are a recurring festival reference, and tea can complement a welcoming table scene. National Cheng Kung University’s 2026 e-card included osmanthus blossoms, a full moon, pomelo, mooncakes, and tea, offering one current example of how several motifs can be combined. The imagery is an example, not a checklist of symbols every recipient will expect.

Lanterns and family wishes
Lanterns and family gatherings appear in accounts of the festival. A card can use lanterns as a colorful accent or keep the design focused on a message such as “Wishing you a joyful Mid-Autumn Festival” or “May the full moon bring you a warm time with family.” Adapt the wording if you know the recipient celebrates differently or prefers a more personal greeting.
Regional symbols need context
Beijing’s municipal cultural guide describes local examples including moon viewing, offerings, lantern play, and Rabbit God figurines. These are useful references for a design specifically about Beijing traditions, but should not be presented as customs shared by all celebrants. Beijing Municipal Government’s account provides that regional context.

How to choose a card format
| Format | Good fit when | What the examples establish |
|---|---|---|
| Digital e-card | You want to send a seasonal greeting digitally or share a design quickly. | National Cheng Kung University announced a downloadable 2026 e-card featuring osmanthus, the full moon, pomelo, mooncakes, and tea. The announcement does not establish that the download remains available. See the university announcement. |
| Physical greeting card | You prefer a printed card or a tactile design. | Hesheng Cards announced a four-design Mid-Autumn series in June 2026 and described textured paper, music, and light elements. These are vendor-described features; the announcement does not establish current stock or comparative quality. See the card-series announcement. |
These announcements show that both digital and physical festival cards exist; they do not show how common card-giving is. Choose based on the recipient, the message, and whether a digital or printed format suits the occasion. If you are shopping, check a seller’s current listing for availability, materials, and delivery details rather than assuming they from a past product announcement.
Making your own painted card
A handmade design does not need to reproduce a specific regional custom. Start with one central image—such as a moon, lantern, or mooncake—and leave a clear area for the greeting. Add secondary details only if they support the message. If you include a symbol tied to a particular place or community, identify that context rather than presenting it as universal.

For a personal touch, write a brief note about what you wish for the recipient: time together, gratitude, or a peaceful celebration. The message matters more than using every familiar motif.
How is the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrated?
Practices differ among communities. Canadian Heritage highlights the full moon, family reunions, harvest, and gratitude; a Hong Kong Education Bureau-hosted resource discusses family gatherings, mooncakes, lanterns, and moon gazing. The Education Bureau-hosted 2022 resource offers an overview, while the Beijing guide documents examples specific to that region. A card can acknowledge familiar themes without suggesting that every family celebrates in the same way.
