Midjourney V5.2 is a legacy model, not Midjourney’s current default. Released in June 2023, it was the default from June 22, 2023, to February 14, 2024; Midjourney now defaults to V8.1 (released April 30, 2026, and made default June 10, 2026). V5.2 remains useful for reproducing older work, matching its sharper photographic character, or learning a workflow built around that model. This guide shows how to select V5.2, use its parameters and image-editing tools, and recognize where a current model or another generator is more suitable.
What Midjourney V5.2 is—and why use it now?
Midjourney released V5.2 in June 2023. Midjourney’s legacy documentation describes it as sharper and more detailed than earlier versions, with improved color, contrast, composition and photographic-looking output. It was the service’s default model from June 22, 2023, through February 14, 2024.
In 2026, V5.2 is best treated as a deliberately chosen legacy model. It can be the right choice when you need to:

- Reproduce or extend an image made with V5.2.
- Match a visual identity already tuned around V5.2 prompts and parameters.
- Study Midjourney’s model progression.
- Prefer its particular color, contrast and composition behavior.
It is a poor default for a new project that depends on current features, current prompt adherence, newer high-resolution modes, or version-specific reference systems. Current tutorials may show controls that did not exist in V5.2, while some older controls have since been retired.

How to activate V5.2
In Discord or on the Midjourney website, add a version parameter to an /imagine prompt:
/imagine prompt: cinematic desert temple at blue hour --v 5.2The long form is equivalent:

/imagine. - Write the prompt and place
--v 5.2at the end. - Submit the job and inspect its metadata to confirm that V5.2 was used.
- If the command is rejected, try
--version 5.2, then check the version selector in Settings. - If neither route exposes V5.2, your account or current interface may no longer provide direct legacy access. Do not assume that an unlabelled result is V5.2.
UI labels and legacy availability can change. A version selector is not proof that every current editing operation will continue using the selected model.

Aspect ratio
Choose the frame before generation rather than planning to crop everything later:
--ar 1:1 square post or avatar
--ar 2:3 portrait print
--ar 3:2 landscape photograph
--ar 16:9 presentation or video frame
--ar 9:16 mobile or vertical poster/imagine prompt: editorial portrait of a botanist in a glasshouse --v 5.2 --ar 2:3An aspect ratio changes the initial composition; it does not guarantee a centered subject or a crop that works in every format.
Stylize
Stylize determines how freely Midjourney interprets the wording. Values around 25–100 are useful starting points for literal, controlled results; 200–400 often gives a balance between instruction and interpretation; 600–1000 is suited to deliberately expressive exploration. These are practical starting points, not fixed quality grades.

Chaos affects how different the four initial images are. Low values (0–10) keep exploration consistent, 20–40 broaden concept search, and 50–100 make results deliberately unpredictable. Chaos is not the same control as Stylize.

Use --q .25 or --q .5 for rapid exploration and --q 1 for a normal final generation. Lower quality does not repair an ambiguous prompt, and higher quality does not guarantee better composition. Do not assume a particular GPU-minute cost; current plan accounting can differ.
Seeds
A seed gives prompt tests a more controlled starting condition:
/imagine prompt: red fox in snow --v 5.2 --seed 12345Keep the model, aspect ratio and major parameters fixed, change one variable at a time, and record the complete prompt. Seeds are not permanent image identifiers and do not guarantee pixel-identical output after infrastructure, interface or model changes.

Stop
--stop ends the render before completion. Lower values generally look softer or less resolved:
/imagine prompt: impressionist seaside village --v 5.2 --stop 70Use it as an experimental way to obtain rough or painterly results, not as a guaranteed speed optimization for every current workflow.
Tile
Tile is intended for repeating patterns:
/imagine prompt: hand-painted botanical wallpaper, antique engraving style --v 5.2 --tileTest the result by placing copies edge-to-edge in an image editor and inspecting all four seams. V5.2 does not guarantee a mathematically perfect repeat.

Remix Mode for controlled changes
Remix lets you edit prompt text when making variations, rerolling, panning or using region-based edits. In Discord, enable it with /prefer remix or through Settings; run the command again to disable it. See Midjourney’s Remix documentation.

- Generate a V5.2 grid.
- Upscale the preferred image.
- Enable Remix Mode.
- Choose a variation, reroll, Pan or Vary Region action.
- Change only the element that needs changing while repeating the subject, lighting and camera language that should remain.
- Compare the new result with the original.
/imagine prompt: elegant Art Deco hotel lobby, brass details, emerald velvet, symmetrical composition --v 5.2 --ar 16:9A Remix revision might add: “add a curved staircase on the right, preserve the lighting and camera angle.” Changing aspect ratio through Remix can stretch the image instead of extending its canvas. For genuine canvas expansion, use Pan, Custom Zoom or the Editor.
Zoom Out and Pan
Zoom Out
Zoom Out adds generated space around an upscaled image. It is documented as compatible with versions 5 and later, with preset 1.5× and 2× options and Custom Zoom from 1.0 to 2.0. It changes composition, not the pixel dimensions of the original by itself.
- Generate with V5.2 and upscale.
- Choose Zoom Out 1.5x, Zoom Out 2x or Custom Zoom.
- For Custom Zoom, enter a value from 1.0 to 2.0.
- Edit the prompt if the surrounding setting needs a specific object or mood.
/imagine prompt: close-up portrait of a medieval astronomer, candlelight --v 5.2 --ar 2:3For a custom continuation, describe the intended context: “reveal the wooden observatory around him, preserve the face and candlelit mood.” The operation can alter the subject or style. Also note that current documentation says Zoom Out on V7 and V8.1 is processed through V6.1; a modern continuation of a V5.2 image therefore may not remain purely V5.2.
Pan
Pan extends the canvas in one direction—left, right, up or down. It is useful for widening a portrait, extending a landscape, adding negative space for type or correcting a tight crop. Pan one direction at a time when placement matters. Remix can describe what belongs in the new area, but boundary details may still change.

Vary Region for local corrections
Vary Region, also presented through the current Editor, changes a selected area while attempting to preserve the rest. Use it to replace a prop, remove a detail, change clothing or correct a localized composition problem.

- Upscale the image.
- Open Vary Region or the Editor.
- Select a reasonably large area around the problem.
- Describe the replacement plainly.
- Keep the rest of the prompt consistent.
- Generate several variations and inspect edges, anatomy, lighting and perspective.
A selection that is too small can preserve artifacts; a selection that is too large can alter nearby anatomy or lighting. Details are covered in Midjourney’s modifying-creations guide.
Image prompts and visual references
An image prompt supplies one or more reference images alongside text. It can influence layout, palette, subject category, pose, silhouette, lighting and mood, but it is guidance rather than an exact-copy command. Midjourney distinguishes Image Prompts from Style References and other reference systems; see the Image Prompts documentation.
/imagine [image URL] weathered coastal lighthouse, cinematic fog, muted teal and amber palette --v 5.2 --ar 16:9- Start with one reference image.
- Describe the desired subject and action in text.
- Use a moderate stylize value.
- Add a second reference only when the first is insufficient.
- Judge the result by composition and mood, not exact identity.
Style Tuner: a legacy-only feature
Style Tuner was associated with the V5.2 era. It generated visual choices that could be selected to create a custom style code. Midjourney now states that /tune no longer works and new Style Tuners cannot be created. Previously created tuners and existing --style code parameters may still be accessible, but availability is not guaranteed.
Do not build a new workflow around /tune. For current projects, Midjourney instead offers newer systems such as Style References, Personalization, Moodboards and Style Explorer; these are not V5.2 features and should not be presented as compatible replacements inside a legacy prompt.
Three practical V5.2 workflows
Controlled concept development
/imagine prompt: coastal research station on black volcanic cliffs, overcast light, documentary architectural photography --v 5.2 --ar 16:9 --s 150 --c 20 --seed 24680- Generate several grids and use Chaos only when you need broader alternatives.
- Keep the seed while comparing wording.
- Upscale the strongest composition.
- Use Remix for targeted changes, Pan or Zoom Out for framing, and Vary Region for local fixes.
- Use an upscale only after composition is final.
Style exploration
/imagine prompt: futuristic botanical laboratory, translucent structures, editorial illustration --v 5.2 --ar 3:2 --s 650 --c 45- Use higher Chaos and Stylize to discover distinct directions.
- Select one visual direction.
- Reduce Chaos for refinement.
- Lower Stylize if the result drifts from the brief.
- Lock a seed for small prompt comparisons.
Image-guided art direction
/imagine [reference image URL] alpine train station at dawn, cinematic travel poster, clean geometric composition --v 5.2 --ar 2:3 --s 250Use the reference for palette or layout, describe the intended subject, test alternate aspect ratios and stylize values, then Remix after upscaling if the central subject needs correction.
Upscaling and compatibility decisions
Midjourney’s legacy notes list V5 2× and 4× upscalers, producing outputs up to 2048×2048 and 4096×4096 respectively. Those upscalers are not compatible with Pan or Tile. Decide whether you need a larger version of the same composition, a newly interpreted upscale, or further canvas operations; if Pan or Tile is required, complete those steps before choosing an incompatible legacy upscale path.
Common failures and fixes
--v 5.2 is rejected
- Try
--version 5.2. - Use the version selector in Settings if it is available.
- Remove other parameters and test a bare V5.2 prompt.
- Check job metadata; a result without V5.2 confirmation should not be treated as V5.2.
Remix changes too much
- Repeat the original subject, camera, lighting and composition language.
- Change one element at a time.
- Lower Stylize.
- Use Vary Region for a localized correction.
- Use a fixed seed for comparisons.
Zoom Out changes the subject
- Use a shorter, more stable prompt.
- Say “preserve the original subject.”
- Try a smaller custom zoom value.
- Use Pan for a one-direction extension.
- Remember that current-version Zoom Out may use V6.1.
Pan creates boundary artifacts
Pan in smaller directional steps, keep the prompt focused, and inspect the join before proceeding. Repair a localized defect with Vary Region rather than repeatedly extending the entire image.

Text is incorrect
V5.2 is not a dependable typography engine. Generate the artwork without lettering, add type in Photoshop, Affinity, Canva or another layout tool, or choose a generator designed for text-heavy images when exact wording is central.
The image is not private
A paid Midjourney plan is not automatically private. Midjourney’s current plan documentation says Stealth Mode is limited to Pro and Mega plans. Check the official plan comparison before submitting confidential client work.
When to choose V5.2, V8.1 or another generator

V7 introduced Draft Mode and Omni Reference, while V8.1 adds newer speed and HD capabilities; these should not be described as V5.2 controls. Choose the current model when you need those capabilities, dependable access or a new project without legacy constraints.
Plans and alternatives
Midjourney’s dated plan snapshot lists Basic at $10 per month or $96 annually, Standard at $30 or $288 annually, Pro at $60 or $576 annually, and Mega at $120 or $1,152 annually. Annual billing is described as a 20% discount; Standard, Pro and Mega include unlimited image generations in Relax Mode, while Stealth Mode is limited to Pro and Mega. Prices can change, so verify them at Midjourney’s account page and the plan documentation.
For a text-heavy design, Ideogram’s pricing page lists a free tier plus paid plans and emphasizes private generation and quality export. For Adobe users, Adobe Firefly lists Firefly Standard at $9.99 per month and Firefly Pro at $19.99 per month in the supplied pricing snapshot, with credits and app access varying by plan. Leonardo.Ai lists free, Essential ($12/month), Premium ($30/month) and Ultimate ($60/month) tiers using token allowances. Canva lists Free, Pro ($144/year for one person in the displayed plan structure) and Business ($250/year per person in that display).
These services solve different problems: Midjourney for aesthetic exploration, Firefly for Adobe production, Ideogram for accurate text, Leonardo for token-based multi-media workflows, and Canva for layout. You do not need all of them.
Bottom line
Use V5.2 intentionally: lock it with --v 5.2, control composition with aspect ratio, Stylize, Chaos, Seed, Quality and Stop, then refine an upscaled image with Remix, Pan, Zoom Out and Vary Region. Treat Style Tuner as historical, not newly creatable. If your priority is current Midjourney functionality, reliable typography, private production or guaranteed access to the latest tools, start with V8.1 or choose a generator built for that requirement instead.
