Midjourney V7 was a major model release, not just a bundle of interface changes: it brought updated prompt and image handling, Draft Mode, and Omni Reference. But V7 is no longer Midjourney’s default. The company’s version documentation records V8.1 as the current default from June 10, 2026, so V7 is now most useful when you need its reference workflow, its particular look, or compatibility with an existing V7 project.
What changed in Midjourney V7?
Midjourney released V7 on April 3, 2025, and made it the default model on June 17, 2025. The company said V7 improved text-prompt interpretation, image-prompt handling, image quality, textures, and coherence in bodies, hands, and objects. It also highlighted improved personalization. These are Midjourney’s descriptions of the release, not independently measured benchmark results. Midjourney’s V7 announcement and default-model announcement explain the launch and rollout.
The practical change was a mix of model behavior and workflow tools. Draft Mode made it cheaper to explore ideas; Omni Reference let users carry a subject from a reference image into a new scene. The web prompt bar and editor also gained controls and capabilities during the V7 rollout, but those interface updates should not be confused with improvements exclusive to the V7 model.

How to select V7 now
V7 remains selectable even though it is no longer the default. In Discord, add --v 7 to an imagine prompt. On the web, select V7 in the model control before generating. If an expected feature is missing, first confirm the selected model: some controls depend on V7, and some are incompatible with particular modes or operations. Midjourney’s version documentation records V7’s chronology and V8.1’s June 10, 2026 default date.
Use Draft Mode to explore ideas for less GPU time
V7 Draft Mode is a rapid ideation mode, not a separate image model. Midjourney’s current Draft documentation says a V7 Draft prompt produces four images at half the GPU cost of a standard V7 prompt; the trade-off is lower-quality output. At V7’s launch, Midjourney described Draft as approximately 10 times faster and half the cost. That was the company’s launch claim, not a guarantee that every prompt or setup will be ten times faster. See the Draft and Conversational Modes documentation and the V7 launch announcement.
Web workflow
- Open Midjourney’s Create page and select V7.
- Click the Draft Mode button beside the Imagine bar.
- Enter a prompt and generate the draft set.
- Select a promising result. Choose Enhance to make a new, higher-quality render, or upscale the draft directly if its quality is sufficient.
In Discord, add --draft to the prompt. Treat Enhance as a new render, not a promise of a pixel-identical enlargement. A draft may look convincing as a thumbnail but lack the detail or finish needed for delivery.
When Draft helps—and when it does not
Use it to compare compositions, lighting, subjects, and broad visual directions before spending more GPU time on a chosen idea. Use standard generation or another suitable finishing workflow when fine detail matters. Draft Mode’s batch size, resolution, and GPU behavior are version-specific: do not assume V8.1 Draft behaves like V7 Draft.

Use Omni Reference to carry a subject into a new image
Omni Reference is V7’s subject-reference feature. It can help place a recognizable character, object, vehicle, or non-human creature from an image into a new composition. It is distinct from Style Reference: Omni Reference concerns what subject to include, while Style Reference concerns the visual language of the result. It helps preserve recognizable traits, but it does not guarantee identical identity, pose, clothing, proportions, or camera treatment across images. Midjourney introduced it in its Omni Reference announcement; the documentation lists the current compatibility rules.
Web workflow
- Set the model to V7.
- Drag an image into the prompt bar and drop it in the Omni-reference image area.
- Adjust the strength slider if needed, then enter the text prompt and generate.
Discord syntax
Use --oref IMAGE_URL to provide the reference and --ow VALUE to adjust its strength. For example:
/imagine a cinematic portrait of a traveler in a desert --v 7 --oref https://example.com/reference.jpg --ow 200

GPU cost and compatibility
Omni Reference uses twice the GPU time of a regular V7 image. It can be combined with personalization, Moodboards, --stylize, and Style References. It cannot be combined with Fast Mode, Draft Mode, Conversational Mode, --q 4, Vary Region, Pan, or Zoom Out. Inpainting and outpainting features that still use V6.1 are also incompatible. If a control disappears or a job behaves unexpectedly, check the selected model and remove incompatible modes or operations before retrying.
Because each Omni Reference generation costs more GPU time, settle the composition and prompt before running many variations. It is a reference-image aid, not a trained character model or deterministic 3D pipeline.
Tell apart personalization, Style Reference, and Moodboards
Personalization
Personalization tries to adapt generations to a user’s visual preferences. It can make results feel more aligned with your taste, but it can also shift the baseline away from a neutral prompt or from examples made by other users. Midjourney said 85% of users preferred personalization in its internal feedback; that figure is the company’s report, not an independent study. When judging V7’s baseline style, compare outputs with personalization on and off rather than assuming a mismatch is caused by the prompt alone. The V7 announcement describes the launch-era personalization approach.
Style Reference and Moodboards
Style Reference uses an image to guide qualities such as mood and visual style without necessarily carrying over that image’s subject. On the web, drag an image into the Style Reference area of the prompt bar. V7’s updated behavior was intended to give users more precise control over a reference’s style; the V7 Style References announcement describes the workflow.

Style Reference and Omni Reference can be used together, but they have different jobs: one guides appearance, the other supplies a subject. If both references are weighted aggressively, they can compete with the text prompt. Current documentation identifies --sv 4 as the older V7 Style Reference model; behavior is version-specific, so check the Style Reference documentation when moving between V7 and newer models.
Conversational and voice modes help formulate prompts
Conversational Mode uses an AI assistant to help write or iterate on a prompt; Voice Mode lets you speak an idea for that workflow. Neither is a separate image model: the modes assist with expressing or refining the request, while the selected Midjourney model generates the image. The web prompt-bar changes and these controls were part of the V7-era interface updates. Midjourney’s editor and prompt-bar update describes them.
These tools can be useful when you know the scene you want but do not yet have concise prompt wording. Review the rewritten prompt before generation, especially when subject details, composition, or constraints must remain precise. Conversational Mode cannot be combined with Omni Reference.

Experimental aesthetics with --exp
The experimental --exp VALUE parameter adjusts aesthetics, not quality in a simple upward scale. Midjourney documents values from 0 to 100, with 0 as the default, and recommends trying 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100. Higher values may add detail, dynamism, or a tone-mapped look, but can reduce prompt accuracy and diversity; very high values may overpower --stylize and personalization. Change it in small increments when you want to explore this effect, rather than assuming a larger number is better. See the V7 update on the editor and --exp.

Web editor changes
Updates during the V7 period included an updated lightbox editor, a restored image reel, smart segmentation, Vary and upscale controls inside the editor, multi-image layers for collages or retexturing, editing for imported external images, and moderation changes intended to reduce mistaken blocks. These are website and editor capabilities associated with the rollout, not proof that every feature is exclusive to V7. The changes are described in Midjourney’s editor improvements announcement and its V7 update.
How V7 compares with V8.1 for a new project
Midjourney’s version documentation identifies V8.1 as the default model as of its June 10, 2026 transition. That does not make it the automatic choice for every project: version selection depends on the features you need and the look you prefer. For a project with no V7-specific dependency, compare both versions using the same prompt and reference image.

Midjourney reported a V7 speed improvement in a May 29, 2025 update: it said Fast-mode render time fell from about 36 seconds to 22 seconds and Turbo from about 13 seconds to 9 seconds, describing the overall change as approximately 40% faster. These are the company’s reported figures, not independent benchmarks; Omni Reference jobs were excluded from the same speed improvement. - Illustrators and concept artists: V7 is worth trying when its look, prompt behavior, or Omni Reference subject workflow fits the image series. Draft Mode is useful for early composition exploration.
- Creators building recurring subject imagery: Omni Reference can help carry a character, object, vehicle, or creature into new scenes, but results still need review for drift and mismatched details.
- People continuing an existing V7 project: Staying on V7 can preserve access to its specific prompt and reference behavior instead of changing the model midstream.
- New subscribers or casual users: Start with the current default if you have no V7-specific need, then test V7 before committing a workflow to it. The extra GPU use of Omni Reference matters if you expect many iterations.
- Designers producing finished layouts: If accurate typography, exact compositing, or dependable production controls are central, image generation alone may not be enough. Plan for a separate design or editing step.
When another tool may fit better
Midjourney is a strong fit for visual ideation and style exploration, but other workflows may call for different tools. Adobe Firefly may suit creators who want image generation integrated with Adobe editing and broader creative-production tools; review its official plans for current terms. Ideogram may be a better candidate when legible text is central to a poster, logo, or graphic; its official plans describe current offerings. These are workflow distinctions, not a claim that either alternative is universally superior.
