Midjourney vs DALL·E: In-Depth Comparison of AI Art Generators (2025)

Midjourney V7 is strongest for stylized art direction, references, personalization, and visual exploration. OpenAI’s newer GPT-4o image generation is better suited to conversational refinement, image transformation, and readable text. Here is how pricing, privacy, editing, commercial use, and copyright change the decision.

In 2025, Midjourney V7 is the better choice for aesthetic control and visual exploration; OpenAI’s newer GPT-4o image generation is the better choice for conversational creation, image transformation, and text-heavy visuals. DALL·E 3 remains available through a dedicated DALL·E GPT, but it is no longer OpenAI’s primary default image-generation direction: GPT-4o image generation became the default in ChatGPT, and the DALL·E 3 API is marked deprecated.

The short answer

Choose Midjourney V7 if your priority is a distinctive visual style, cinematic atmosphere, art direction, image references, and repeatable aesthetic exploration. Choose OpenAI’s newer GPT-4o image-generation workflow if you want conversational prompting, multi-turn refinement, readable text inside images, diagrams, or image editing guided by natural-language instructions.

DALL·E 3 is still relevant in a narrower sense, but it is no longer the whole OpenAI story. In 2025, OpenAI introduced native GPT-4o image generation in ChatGPT and made it the default image generator there. DALL·E remains available through a dedicated DALL·E GPT, while OpenAI’s documentation marks DALL·E 3 API access as deprecated. A fair comparison therefore needs to distinguish the original DALL·E 3 experience from OpenAI’s newer image model.

Midjourney vs DALL·E at a glance

There is no universal winner. Output quality depends on the prompt, subject, style, reference material, aspect ratio, editing needs, and the number of attempts you are willing to make. The official product descriptions support different strengths, but they do not establish that one generator wins every head-to-head test.

What changed during 2025?

The title “Midjourney vs DALL·E” became harder to answer during the year because both products changed position:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • March 25, 2025: OpenAI introduced native GPT-4o image generation and described it as a more capable successor to the earlier DALL·E 3 series. OpenAI highlighted instruction following, text rendering, image transformation, image inputs, contextual creation, and multi-turn refinement.
  • April 3, 2025: Midjourney released V7.
  • June 17, 2025: Midjourney V7 became the default version.
  • During the GPT-4o rollout: OpenAI said GPT-4o image generation would become ChatGPT’s default image generator, while DALL·E would remain available through a dedicated DALL·E GPT.
  • Current API documentation: DALL·E 3 API access is marked deprecated, with developers directed toward newer GPT Image models.

For that reason, the most useful 2025 comparison is really three-way: Midjourney V7 for visual art direction, DALL·E 3 as the simpler legacy OpenAI experience, and GPT-4o image generation as OpenAI’s newer default workflow.

What Midjourney V7 is best at

Midjourney is best understood as a dedicated visual-creation environment rather than merely a text box that happens to produce pictures. Its workflow is built around exploring a look, comparing variations, supplying visual references, and gradually developing an aesthetic.

Midjourney’s documentation describes V7 as improving texture, coherence in bodies, hands, and objects, and the precision with which the system handles text and image prompts. Those improvements matter for concept art, editorial imagery, cinematic scenes, fashion-like compositions, fantasy environments, and other work where mood and visual identity matter as much as literal prompt compliance.

V7 also introduced Draft Mode and Omni Reference. The former is intended for faster, rougher exploration, while the latter helps carry a person or object into new images. The practical value is not that every reference will be reproduced perfectly; it is that Midjourney gives the user more explicit tools for steering a visual series.

Midjourney’s visual control system

Midjourney offers several controls that serve different purposes:

  • Image Prompts influence content, composition, and colors.
  • Style References influence the visual appearance or mood without necessarily copying the reference subject.
  • Personalization adapts the generated aesthetic from images you have selected.
  • Moodboards help collect and reuse a visual direction.
  • Omni Reference helps carry a person or object into new generations in V7.
  • Parameters and model settings give experienced users additional control over the generation process.

These features make Midjourney attractive to painters, illustrators, concept artists, and designers who want to develop a recognizable visual language. They also create a learning curve. You need to understand which reference type controls subject identity, which controls style, and when a dedicated edit is more appropriate than another fresh generation.

What DALL·E 3 and GPT-4o image generation are best at

DALL·E 3’s historic advantage was its low-friction, natural-language workflow through ChatGPT. A beginner could describe the subject, setting, mood, and desired composition conversationally instead of learning a specialized command vocabulary. It was particularly approachable for users who wanted a useful illustration quickly rather than a full visual-development environment.

That ease of use still describes the dedicated DALL·E experience, but OpenAI’s newer GPT-4o image generation extends the same conversational idea. OpenAI says GPT-4o can follow detailed instructions, use uploaded images as visual context, preserve important details during multi-turn edits, and render text more effectively. OpenAI’s examples include signs, diagrams, labels, menus, and other forms of visual communication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are OpenAI’s stated capabilities, not the result of an independent benchmark. A prompt containing many relationships, exact labels, or a particular layout can still require corrections. The important distinction is workflow: OpenAI puts the conversation and context at the center, whereas Midjourney puts visual exploration and explicit reference controls at the center.

Feature-by-feature comparison

1. Image quality and visual style

Midjourney’s clearest advantage is its dedicated aesthetic system. The combination of V7’s documented improvements, style references, personalization, moodboards, and image prompts makes it a strong fit for users seeking a coherent mood or a deliberately art-directed result.

That does not mean Midjourney always looks better. It often feels more immediately stylized, but “better” depends on whether you want a polished cinematic image, a restrained diagram, a literal product mockup, a natural-looking portrait, or something else entirely.

GPT-4o is the more relevant OpenAI comparison for new work in 2025. OpenAI emphasizes photorealism, instruction following, text rendering, and contextual image creation. This can be useful when the image must communicate information or obey several precise visual constraints rather than simply establish an atmosphere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Prompt adherence and text in images

Midjourney V7 is documented as handling text and image prompts with greater precision than earlier versions. Its reference systems can influence composition, colors, content, and style. However, image prompts are intended as inspiration rather than exact copying. If you need a precise change to an existing image, Midjourney’s Editor is generally the more appropriate tool.

GPT-4o image generation is the stronger starting point when the brief contains a lot of readable text or interconnected instructions. For example, a request for a labeled botanical diagram, a café menu, a street sign with specified wording, or an infographic layout is naturally suited to a conversational model that can discuss and revise the requirements.

Neither system should be treated as a typesetting application. For final client work, inspect every word, number, label, and logo. If exact spelling is essential, plan for a correction pass in an image editor or layout program.

3. Iteration and editing

Midjourney’s web Editor functions as a dedicated visual toolkit. Its documented tools include:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Remix for changing the prompt while varying an image.
  • Vary Region for inpainting a selected area.
  • Pan for extending a composition.
  • Zoom Out for expanding the visible scene.
  • Custom aspect ratios for reshaping the composition.
  • Layers for compositing elements.
  • Retexture for changing an image’s surface treatment or style.

The Editor can work with Midjourney images and uploaded personal images. Midjourney notes that some image-generation functions inside the Editor may use an older underlying version than the newest generation model, so the Editor should not automatically be assumed to represent every V7 capability.

GPT-4o takes a different approach. You can upload an image, describe the change, inspect the result, and continue refining it in the same conversation. This is especially intuitive for instructions such as “keep the character’s face and clothing, change the background to a rainy harbor, and remove the object on the left.” The strength is context preservation and conversational simplicity; the trade-off is less of a dedicated panel of specialized visual controls.

4. Reference images, style control, and consistency

Midjourney is the more explicit choice for reference-led visual development. You can use one mechanism to influence a subject, another to influence style, and personalization or moodboards to establish a broader aesthetic direction. V7’s Omni Reference is particularly relevant when you want a recurring person or object across a series.

There are limits. A reference image is not a command to reproduce every pixel, and it does not guarantee identity consistency from one generation to the next. Midjourney itself describes image prompts as inspiration. For exact changes to an existing image, use the Editor rather than expecting a new generation to preserve everything automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OpenAI’s GPT-4o workflow is more intuitive when the reference is part of a conversation. You can upload an image as visual inspiration, explain what matters about it, and ask for a transformation. OpenAI describes this as using images for visual context and in-context learning, with important details preserved through iterative edits.

5. Ease of use and learning curve

For a first-time user, the OpenAI workflow is easier to approach. You can start with an ordinary sentence, see the result, and ask for a revision. DALL·E 3’s dedicated GPT retains that low-friction experience.

Midjourney rewards a more deliberate learning process. Its controls include model versions, parameters, image prompts, Style References, Personalization, Moodboards, Omni Reference, and Editor modes. Midjourney’s own prompting guidance identifies useful ingredients such as:

  • subject
  • medium
  • environment
  • lighting
  • color
  • mood
  • composition

A useful Midjourney brief might therefore specify a subject, medium, setting, light direction, palette, emotional tone, and framing before adding a style reference. The advantage is more intentional art direction. The disadvantage is that beginners can spend time learning controls instead of making images.

If you are learning the craft, do not assume a prompt guide will remain current indefinitely. Model versions, parameter names, defaults, and interface labels can change. Any Midjourney prompt book should be checked for its edition and publication date before purchase.

6. Privacy and visibility

Midjourney is not automatically private. Its plan documentation says Stealth Mode, which keeps images and videos private, is available only on the Pro and Mega plans. Without Stealth Mode, Midjourney warns that prompt details—including images and parameters—may be visible alongside creations on midjourney.com.

Midjourney also stores uploaded images in a personal uploads library, and uploads and edited results have specific visibility behavior in the Editor. Do not upload confidential client material, unreleased product designs, private photographs, or sensitive personal images until you have checked the current plan terms and visibility settings.

There is no responsible one-line privacy winner for OpenAI. The relevant answer depends on whether you are using a personal ChatGPT account, a business workspace, or an API product, along with the applicable settings and terms. Check the current OpenAI privacy and product documentation before treating uploaded images or generated content as confidential.

7. Pricing and usage economics

Midjourney’s documented monthly subscription tiers in the 2025 comparison are:

Plan Monthly price Notable documented feature
Basic $10 per month Entry-level access.
Standard $30 per month Unlimited image generations in Relax Mode.
Pro $60 per month Unlimited Relax Mode plus Stealth Mode.
Mega $120 per month Higher-tier access plus Stealth Mode.

Midjourney also documents annual billing at a 20% discount when paid upfront. Standard, Pro, and Mega include unlimited image generations in Relax Mode. “Unlimited” does not mean unlimited fast generations, and the practical value depends on how much you care about waiting, how many variations you make, and whether private work is necessary. Prices and plan terms are commercial details that can change, so verify them immediately before subscribing.

DALL·E does not have a directly comparable current price in this comparison. Access depends on whether you use ChatGPT or an API, and the API situation has changed because DALL·E 3 API access is marked deprecated. Avoid repeating an old per-image API price as though it were current. Developers should consult OpenAI’s current image-generation documentation and compare the pricing of the model and API path they actually intend to use.

The most honest cost calculation includes more than subscription price:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Count the number of usable images you need, not the number of images generated.
  2. Account for variations and failed attempts.
  3. Separate fast or priority generations from relaxed or slower usage.
  4. Include the cost of a separate editor, layout application, or human cleanup.
  5. Value your time: a cheaper tool may cost more if it takes longer to reach a usable result.

8. Commercial use, ownership, and copyright

These are separate questions, and confusing them creates legal risk:

  • May the platform allow you to use the output?
  • Do you own contractual rights assigned by the platform?
  • Does copyright law protect the particular output?
  • Does the image contain someone else’s protected material, trademark, or likeness?

OpenAI’s individual Terms of Use state that, between the user and OpenAI and to the extent permitted by law, the user owns the output and OpenAI assigns its rights, if any, in that output to the user. The same terms warn that outputs may not be unique. Business and API arrangements can have different contractual provisions, so do not apply the individual ChatGPT wording automatically to every OpenAI product.

Platform permission is not a guarantee of copyright protection. The U.S. Copyright Office’s January 29, 2025 report explains that purely AI-generated material is not protected merely because a person supplied prompts. Human creative selection, arrangement, modification, or other expressive contribution may support copyright protection, depending on the work and the facts.

In practical terms, keep records of your source material and revisions, make meaningful human edits where appropriate, and do not assume that a generated character, logo, portrait, or painting is exclusive simply because you created it. You remain responsible for the images you upload, the prompts you provide, trademarks, recognizable people, likeness rights, and potentially infringing uses. Copyright rules also vary by country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

9. Safety and content restrictions

Neither service is an unrestricted image generator. OpenAI describes safety systems that restrict content involving child sexual abuse material, sexual deepfakes, nudity involving real people, and graphic violence. Midjourney’s Editor documentation similarly places responsibility on users for uploaded material and prohibits abusive, offensive, derogatory, inflammatory, or sexualized-deepfake manipulation of people.

Moderation can affect both prompts and outputs, and policies may change. If a legitimate project is refused, read the current policy and adjust the request rather than assuming that switching services removes the ethical or legal issue.

Which generator should you choose?

Choose Midjourney V7 when visual direction matters most

  • You want a recognizable style across a body of work.
  • You are exploring cinematic, painterly, editorial, fantasy, fashion, or concept-art directions.
  • You are comfortable learning references, parameters, personalization, and editing tools.
  • You need explicit controls for style references, moodboards, or recurring objects and characters.
  • You expect to generate many variations and are comfortable using Relax Mode where available.

Midjourney is especially compelling for a painter or illustrator who treats generation as part of an art-direction process: gather references, establish a mood, generate alternatives, select a promising composition, and refine it in the Editor or another application.

Choose GPT-4o image generation when conversation and precision are more important

  • You want to describe an idea in ordinary language.
  • You need to refine an uploaded image through several conversational steps.
  • Your design includes signs, labels, menus, diagrams, or other visible text.
  • You want the system to remember the context of the request while you revise it.
  • You do not want to learn a specialized image-generation workflow before starting.

GPT-4o is the more current OpenAI recommendation for new ChatGPT image work in 2025. It does not make DALL·E 3 irrelevant, but it does mean that a review calling DALL·E 3 OpenAI’s newest or default image model is out of date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the dedicated DALL·E GPT for a specific legacy experience

The dedicated DALL·E GPT remains useful if you specifically want the DALL·E interface or need compatibility with an existing DALL·E 3-centered workflow. OpenAI says DALL·E remains available to ChatGPT Free, Plus, Business, and Pro users through that dedicated GPT. For new API development, however, treat DALL·E 3 as a deprecated path and review the current GPT Image options instead.

A practical workflow for painters and illustrators

  1. Define the job before choosing the model. Decide whether you need mood exploration, a finished illustration, a reference-led variation, a diagram, a character sheet, or an edit to an existing image.
  2. Choose Midjourney for visual exploration. Start with the subject, medium, environment, light, palette, mood, and composition. Add an image prompt or Style Reference only when you know what that reference is supposed to control.
  3. Choose GPT-4o for conversational transformation. Upload the relevant image, identify the elements that must remain unchanged, and describe one or two edits at a time.
  4. Inspect the result rather than trusting the prompt. Check hands, faces, anatomy, repeated objects, lettering, perspective, and unintended symbols.
  5. Use dedicated editing for precision. Midjourney’s Editor can handle localized changes, masking, expansion, layers, and retexturing. A separate image editor may still be the better choice for exact typography, color correction, compositing, or final print preparation.
  6. Document your human contribution. Save source images, prompts, selected generations, edits, and compositing steps if the work may become part of a commercial or copyright-sensitive project.

If you plan to paint over masks, clean up edges, or composite generated elements by hand, a drawing tablet for digital art may be more comfortable than a mouse. It is optional: neither Midjourney nor GPT-4o requires one, and the tablet will not improve the underlying generation.

Affiliate disclosure: if a retailer link is added to this optional accessory suggestion, it may support That Painter at no extra cost. It is not part of the core Midjourney-versus-OpenAI recommendation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing Midjourney V7 with “DALL·E” without naming the OpenAI workflow. In 2025, GPT-4o image generation became the default ChatGPT image generator, while DALL·E remained a separate accessible option.
  • Calling Midjourney automatically private. Stealth Mode is limited to Pro and Mega plans, and visibility behavior matters.
  • Promising perfect text. GPT-4o is positioned as stronger at text rendering, but every final label still needs inspection.
  • Declaring one model universally better. Aesthetic exploration, exact text, image transformation, and commercial production are different tasks.
  • Using image prompts as if they were tracing commands. Midjourney says image prompts provide inspiration; use the Editor for more precise changes.
  • Assuming commercial permission equals copyright. Platform terms, copyrightability, exclusivity, and third-party rights are different issues.
  • Quoting outdated DALL·E API pricing. The DALL·E 3 API is marked deprecated, so check the current API documentation.
  • Uploading confidential images without checking settings. Review Midjourney visibility and the relevant OpenAI account, workspace, or API terms first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Midjourney better than DALL·E?

For most users, there is no single winner. Midjourney V7 is the stronger fit for cinematic, painterly, stylized, and reference-led exploration. GPT-4o image generation is the stronger fit for conversational prompting, image transformation, detailed instructions, and text-heavy visuals. The answer depends on the job rather than on a universal image-quality ranking.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is DALL·E 3 still available in 2025?

DALL·E 3 remains available through a dedicated DALL·E GPT for supported ChatGPT users, but OpenAI made GPT-4o image generation the default image generator in ChatGPT during 2025. OpenAI’s documentation also marks DALL·E 3 API access as deprecated, so new API projects should review current GPT Image options.

Which is more private, Midjourney or DALL·E?

Not automatically. Midjourney documents Stealth Mode as available only on Pro and Mega plans, and warns that creations and related prompt details may otherwise be visible on midjourney.com. For OpenAI, privacy depends on the account, workspace, product, and settings. Check the current terms before uploading confidential material.

Can I use Midjourney or DALL·E images commercially?

Commercial use permission is not the same as guaranteed copyright protection. OpenAI’s individual terms assign output rights to the user to the extent permitted by law, but outputs may not be unique and business or API terms can differ. In the United States, prompts alone generally do not make purely AI-generated material copyrightable; human selection, arrangement, or meaningful modification may contribute protectable authorship.

Which AI art generator is better at text in images?

GPT-4o image generation is usually the better starting point when an image contains signs, menus, labels, diagrams, or other important text because OpenAI specifically highlights text rendering and detailed instruction following. Always proofread the result and plan a final typography or editing pass for exact wording.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Midjourney V7 is the better fit for visual artists who want style control, references, personalization, and an art-directed exploration workflow. OpenAI’s GPT-4o image generation is the better fit for conversational creation, image transformation, detailed instructions, and text-heavy visuals. DALL·E 3 remains accessible through its dedicated GPT, but it should be treated as a legacy or specific-interface option rather than OpenAI’s primary new image-generation direction in 2025.
