Miffy’s illustrations are recognizable because Dick Bruna reduced each subject to a few clear shapes, strong black contours and a small palette of vivid colors. That spare look was carefully made by hand—not casually simplified—and it leaves room for young readers to supply feeling and detail from their own imaginations.

Who created Miffy, and how did the character begin?

Dutch artist Dick Bruna first drew Miffy in 1955. The official Miffy history says the idea came from bedtime stories he told his eldest son, Sierk, while the family was on holiday in Egmond aan Zee. Bruna pictured the bunny in a dress, making Miffy a girl.

The design changed over time. Early Miffy had a fluffier, toy-like appearance and floppy ears. From 1963, in the square-format books, her look moved closer to the familiar, more graphic figure.

What makes Dick Bruna’s Miffy illustrations recognizable?

Reduction, not lack of craft

Bruna observed his subjects and sketched them, then removed details until the essential lines remained. The result is spare and graphic: recognizable forms are bounded by thick black outlines and filled with a limited range of bright colors. The official account of Bruna’s books explains that the lack of detail gives children space to imagine.

That restraint also makes small marks matter. A minimal face can convey a strong emotion with very little: the official books page points to a single tear as an example of how one detail can intensify expression. Bruna described the purpose this way: “I create a world that children fill with their own imagination.”

Lines that retain the artist’s hand

The bold outlines are not perfectly mechanical. The official explanation of Bruna’s black lines notes that he did not smooth away their characteristic slight shakiness. Their irregularity gives the drawings a sense of movement and keeps the hand-made line visible.

How did Bruna make the drawings?

Bruna built the image through a sequence of drawing and painting rather than computer illustration:

  1. Sketch: He began with pencil drawings on tracing paper, revising the image until it felt right.
  2. Transfer: He placed the chosen drawing over watercolor paper and retraced its lines with a hard pencil, pressing enough to leave a groove.
  3. Contour: He followed that groove with a brush to paint the black outline.
  4. Color: He completed the image with the restrained, vivid colors associated with his work.

The groove served as a physical guide for the brush; the resulting line was not polished into a uniform stroke. This process helps explain why the images can feel both controlled and lively.

How are the Miffy books designed?

Bruna’s first picture book, The Apple, appeared in 1953; the first Miffy book followed in 1955. The early books were rectangular. In 1959, the format became a 16 × 16 cm square, chosen to be manageable for young children. The characteristic spread places an illustration on the right-hand page and four lines of text on the left, according to the official books history.

Bruna created more than 120 books and published his last in 2011. That is a count of his books overall, not a count of Miffy titles. The same official page reports cumulative totals of more than 90 million copies printed and translations into more than 50 languages; it does not date those totals. It notes that Russian became the 50th language in February 2011.

Where can readers explore Bruna’s work?

The official Miffy exhibitions page records the Rijksmuseum’s 2015 exhibition “Dick Bruna. Artist” and the opening of the Miffy Museum in Utrecht in 2016, following the Dick Bruna House. It describes the Miffy Museum as designed for children aged 2 to 6. Centraal Museum Utrecht says its Dick Bruna Collection contains almost the entire body of his work on long-term loan. Exhibition schedules and visitor arrangements can change, so check the museums’ own current information before planning a visit.
