Minwax has named Pickled Oak (MW260) its 2027 Color of the Year. The company describes the shade as a light, soft neutral with warm undertones, intended to let wood grain show through as a subtle wash. That is Minwax’s characterization—not a guaranteed result on every species or surface.
What Pickled Oak looks like
Minwax presents Pickled Oak as a restrained, warm-toned finish that highlights rather than hides the grain. The appearance will depend on the wood and the product format, so the description should be treated as a starting point, not a color-match promise. Minwax’s 2027 Color of the Year page attributes this description to Lisbeth Parada, Color Marketing Manager: “Pickled Oak honors the grain, amplifies warmth and restores calm, proving that gentleness can be a form of strength and beauty.”

- One Step Stain & Topcoat

These formats differ in product type and, where offered, opacity. The announcement does not provide a controlled comparison of their application, dry time, durability, coverage, or finished color, so those characteristics should not be inferred from the Color of the Year designation. Confirm that the package is MW260 and the intended format when shopping. Minwax says the products are available through retailers nationwide; that does not confirm stock at a particular store.

Will Pickled Oak look the same on your wood?
No single appearance is assured. Minwax warns that wood species can affect the resulting color and that the shade may vary slightly with product technology. Its solid-color page and semi-transparent page identify Pickled Oak as MW260 and recommend testing in a hidden area.
- Choose the MW260 product format and opacity that suit the project.
- Apply a sample to a hidden area of the actual wood, or test a matching offcut.
- Judge the result on that wood before committing to the larger surface.
A sample on a different species—or a different product format—may not predict the final appearance on the project.

Color pairings in Minwax’s lookbook
Minwax’s lookbook pairs Pickled Oak with Celery, Deep Rooted, and Cottage Door. The lookbook identifies those as 2027 Color of the Year selections from HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams, Dutch Boy, and Valspar, respectively. Treat the grouping as a palette suggestion, not as a tested compatibility or finished-room guarantee.

Pickled Oak is Minwax’s annual color selection and reflects the company’s interpretation of design preferences; the announcement does not establish it as a market-wide trend. Lisbeth Parada, identified in the release as Color and Design Lead at Minwax, said: “We’re seeing a shift toward wood tones that celebrate the material itself and its character.”

The same October 6, 2026 release says Minwax offers more than 240 stain colors and describes the company as having more than 120 years in wood finishing and wood care. It also calls Minwax America’s No. 1 selling brand of interior wood stains and clears, citing YipitDATA industry data for the 12-month period ending 09/25; the footnote does not specify the year for that endpoint. These are company-reported figures and claims, not independent assessments.
