In a video of Miranda Hart and her dog Patti, the back of a low sofa separates the living-room seating area from the space beyond without shutting off the view. It’s a useful example of how furniture placement can zone an open-plan room while keeping it visually connected. Interior designer Blanca Sanchez reads the far area as possibly an exercise space, but Hart has not confirmed its purpose.
How does the sofa create a boundary?
Sanchez, director of Halo Design Interiors, points to the sectional sofa as the room’s main divider. Its back marks where the seating zone begins and ends, while its low profile leaves sightlines open across the room. As Sanchez puts it, “Turning the back of a sofa towards another area is one of the easiest ways to create a boundary without blocking light or sightlines.”
The area beyond the sofa looks distinct, with equipment and artwork that Sanchez thinks may indicate exercise. She says, “I think I’m seeing a yoga mat?” That is an interpretation of what appears in the video, not a confirmed account from Hart.

What keeps the separate zones feeling connected?
The pale timber flooring continues across the visible spaces rather than changing at the seating area. That shared finish links the zones, even as the sofa and the different-looking area beyond it suggest separate uses. The room shows that zoning does not require a new floor finish or a physical partition at every boundary.
Sanchez describes the layout as having “clear separate functions” without looking “too divided up.” In her view, the sofa gives the seating area definition while the overall space remains open.

How to adapt the idea to your own room
Start with the largest piece
Before adding smaller furniture, decide where the sofa needs to sit in relation to the other activities in the room. Turning its back toward the next zone can establish an edge for the seating area. Whether that works depends on your entrances, windows and sightlines; the video offers no room dimensions or floor plan to copy.
Protect the walking route
Work out how people will move between entrances and the room’s different areas before placing side tables, chairs or storage. If the usual route requires weaving around furniture, the arrangement may need to change. Keep smaller pieces from obstructing the path that makes the open-plan layout useful.

Use lighting to distinguish activities
Choose light for what happens in each zone: Sanchez suggests softer lamps for seating and brighter task lighting for work, cooking or exercise. Lighting can make areas feel suited to different activities without adding a wall or changing the floor.
Consider a rug as an optional anchor
A large rug can give the seating group a clearer footprint and add comfort underfoot. Lizzie Mosley, creative director at Hug Rug, says a rug can anchor furniture such as a sofa, armchair or coffee table to help define a living area. This is general design advice; the video does not establish that Hart uses a rug to zone her room.

Which zoning method should you choose?

The methods can work together, but none is a universal formula. Hart’s room is best understood as an expert’s reading of a video, not a published floor plan or a layout she has described herself.
