A notable historical Mother’s Day cartoon shows a soldier writing to his mother amid the chaos of battle, with her image in his mind. Cartoonist Clifford Berryman’s drawing, dated May 12, 1918, is held by the National Archives. It captures the holiday through wartime separation—not as a lighthearted greeting-card joke, but as a reminder of a personal connection sustained across distance. See the National Archives’ cartoon and caption.
What does the 1918 Mother’s Day cartoon show?
Berryman’s drawing places a soldier in a battlefield setting as he writes home. His mother’s image appears in his thoughts, linking the immediate danger of war with the act of remembering family. The National Archives caption says, “Cartoonist Clifford Berryman captures the spirit of Mother’s Day.” The cartoon is dated May 12, 1918, during the First World War. The image is best read as a historical cartoon about the meaning of the holiday in wartime. It is not evidence that every soldier observed Mother’s Day in the same way, nor does its date make it a record of a particular military order.
How did Mother’s Day acquire its meaning in the United States?
The American holiday’s history has more than one strand. Julia Ward Howe’s peace appeal and Anna Jarvis’s later campaign to honor her mother were different projects, even though both used the language of Mother’s Day.

Julia Ward Howe’s 1870 appeal for peace
In 1870, Howe issued what was originally called an “Appeal to womanhood throughout the world.” She asked women to work for peace and proposed an annual Mother’s Day for Peace. As quoted by the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum, Howe wrote: “I earnestly ask that a general congress of women, without limit of nationality, may be appointed … to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.” This peace-focused proposal was distinct from the observance later promoted by Jarvis. Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum: “The History of Mother’s Day: From Global Peace to Greeting Cards”
Anna Jarvis and the national observance
Jarvis campaigned to honor her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis, and sought a national Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation for the first national observance in 1914. Jarvis chose the white carnation as an emblem and urged people to express their feelings personally, including through letters. She later objected to the holiday’s commercialization and disliked pre-printed cards, preferring personal messages. Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum

What does the 1919 telegram add to the cartoon’s context?
A separate National Archives record helps explain the period’s emphasis on writing home. A telegram dated May 6, 1919, relayed the Secretary of War’s wish that soldiers write to their mothers for Mother’s Day. The Archives notes that millions of troops were still returning from overseas. This is context from 1919; it should not be mistaken for the subject or circumstances of Berryman’s 1918 cartoon. National Archives Museum: “Write to Mom. That’s an order!”

A cartoon interprets an idea or moment in a single image; a greeting card is made to be given, often with a message. The two forms can overlap in illustration, but the surviving examples here are distinct objects with their own contexts.

A 1930 illustrated greeting card
The National Museum of American History catalogs a 1930 Mother’s Day card titled My Mother, illustrated with a woman dressed in 1860s-era fashion. Its collection record says reuse restrictions apply. Anyone hoping to reproduce the image should check the museum’s rights and reproduction terms rather than assume that an old card is free to reuse. A related 1934 stamp and editorial cartoon
In 1934, Franklin D. Roosevelt sketched an idea for a Mother’s Day postage stamp. Artists at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing followed his sketch fairly closely, and the stamp was issued on May 2, 1934. The National Postal Museum also documents a Washington Star editorial cartoon published on May 11 that year, encouraging people to write their mothers. These are related examples of the holiday in public imagery, but Roosevelt’s stamp sketch is not itself a cartoon. What to look for in a Mother’s Day cartoon
- Who is separated from whom? In Berryman’s 1918 cartoon, the soldier’s letter connects the battlefield to home.
- What is the image asking you to feel or do? The 1919 telegram explicitly encouraged soldiers to write; the 1934 editorial cartoon likewise promoted writing to mothers.
- Is it a historical artifact or a contemporary greeting? A period cartoon can document attitudes and circumstances, while a modern cartoon-style card is designed for a recipient and a present-day occasion.
If choosing a contemporary cartoon-style card, think about whether the recipient would enjoy humor or sentiment and whether the image suits your relationship. The historical sources identify examples of older cards and cartoons, but do not establish current designs, sellers, stock, or prices.
