A mouse icon is the on-screen pointer graphic—or, in software documentation, sometimes the name of a platform-specific property. For painters and digital artists, the useful distinction is between the cursor’s appearance, the interaction it signals, and its hotspot: the precise point where input takes effect. Those details vary by app and platform, so there is no universal cursor-image size or implementation rule.

What does “mouse icon” mean?

Most often, it means the graphic that represents the mouse pointer on screen. The pointer may show where input will land or indicate what an interface element will do. In Microsoft VBA, MouseIcon has a narrower meaning: it is a property for assigning a custom icon to an object.

Common pointer icons and what they communicate

Pointer designs vary across operating systems and applications, but common states include:

  • Arrow: general pointer movement and selection.
  • Hand: an element can be clicked or otherwise activated.
  • Text I-beam: a text region can accept a caret or text selection.
  • Resize: an edge or object can be resized in the indicated direction.
  • Wait: the app is busy or processing an action.
  • Grab: an object or canvas can be moved or dragged.
  • Crosshair: precise pointing, such as selecting a location or drawing.
  • Zoom: the pointer is being used to enlarge or reduce a view.

These are familiar examples, not a promise that every platform supplies the same set or uses identical artwork. Android’s documentation lists hand, text, wait, grab, crosshair, resize, and zoom among its standard pointer icons.

Choosing a custom cursor for digital painting

A cursor in a painting app should make the active tool and its point of action easy to understand. A brush outline can help show the area affected by a stroke; a crosshair can aid precise placement; and a grab-style pointer can signal that the canvas is movable. These are design choices, not universal requirements, and an app may use its own cursor system.

Place the hotspot where the action happens

The hotspot is the point on the cursor image where the input is registered. It should match the task. For a drawing cursor shaped like a pen, for example, the point at the tip is a natural hotspot; Android uses that as an illustration in its guidance for custom pointer icons. A hotspot placed away from the visible tip can make a stroke appear offset from the cursor.

Use a system cursor or a custom one?

A standard system cursor provides a familiar interaction cue and is typically the simplest choice. A custom cursor can better communicate a tool or interaction, but its shape should remain legible and its hotspot should align with the action. Android supports custom pointer icons made from bitmaps, but that does not establish that the same format, dimensions, or behavior applies in other environments.

Platform-specific implementation details

Platform or property What the documentation says Important qualification
Roblox Creator Hub: Mouse.Icon The image dimensions determine cursor size; neither axis should exceed 256 pixels. The image center is where mouse input is issued. The documented default image is 64×64 pixels, with the mouse occupying 17×24 pixels. These are Roblox-specific values, not a general cursor standard. The documentation says Mouse.Icon is expected to be deprecated after a newer plugin API is released, so check its current status before using it. Roblox Creator Hub: Mouse.Icon
Android pointer icons Android documents standard pointer types and custom icons created from bitmaps. The hotspot can be positioned to suit the task, such as at a pen tip in a drawing app. Android’s cursor guidance and API behavior are specific to Android. Android: Advanced stylus features and pointer icons
Android large-screen apps Custom cursors can help communicate how and when users can interact with interface elements and content. This is guidance for large-screen Android experiences, not a universal requirement. Android: Learn about large screens
Microsoft VBA: MouseIcon The property assigns a custom icon to an object; a picture may be assigned or loaded from a file. Microsoft documents the property as valid when MousePointer is set to 99. This is a VBA-specific property, not a general name for pointer icons. Microsoft Learn: MouseIcon property

Why “MouseIcon” can mean something different in VBA

In Microsoft VBA, MouseIcon refers to an object property rather than a general cursor category. Microsoft Learn says it is valid when that object’s MousePointer property is set to 99. The custom picture can be assigned or loaded from a file. Those instructions apply to the VBA property only; they should not be carried over to Android, Roblox, or a painting application without platform-specific documentation.
