Microsoft Paint is free and normally already included with Windows. You usually do not need to download it from a third-party website: open Start, type Paint, and press Enter. If Paint is missing because it was removed, use Microsoft’s official reinstall instructions or the Microsoft Store—not an unofficial “free download” site.
How to open MS Paint without downloading it
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Paint.
- Select Paint from the search results, or press Enter.
On a current Windows 11 installation, Paint is an inbox Windows app. Microsoft describes it as a basic graphics editor for tasks such as cropping, resizing, drawing, adding shapes, and inserting text. The app is included with Windows rather than sold as a separate paid program.
How to reinstall Paint if it is missing
If searching Start produces no Paint result, the app may have been uninstalled, disabled, or damaged. Microsoft provides an official uninstall-and-reinstall procedure with separate installers for different Windows processor architectures.

- Open Microsoft’s official support instructions for uninstalling and reinstalling Paint.
- Check that your Windows installation meets the documented prerequisite. Microsoft lists Windows 10 version 22H2, build 19045.3758 or later for that reinstall workflow.
- Choose the installer that matches your computer: Windows 64-bit, Windows 32-bit, or Windows ARM64.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow the on-screen instructions.
- After installation finishes, open Start and search for Paint again.
Do not assume that a file labeled “Paint for Windows” is compatible with every Windows release. Microsoft’s official reinstall files are architecture-specific and have version requirements, so check your Windows version and system type before installing anything.

Find Paint through Microsoft Store
Microsoft Store is another controlled distribution route when Paint is offered for your Windows installation:
- Open Microsoft Store from Start.
- Search for Paint.
- Select the Microsoft Paint app.
- Choose Get.
- Sign in if Microsoft Store asks you to do so, then allow the installation to complete.
Store labels and availability can vary by Windows version and account. If the Store listing is unavailable or the installation fails, use Microsoft’s official Paint reinstall instructions instead.
Do not download Paint from random “free software” sites
Microsoft’s general installation guidance recommends downloading programs only from trusted publishers and retail websites. That matters especially for this search because third-party pages may offer altered, obsolete, bundled, or unsafe files under a familiar name.
This does not mean every third-party download page is malicious. It does mean that there is little reason to take the risk: Paint is included with Windows, and Microsoft provides official ways to access or reinstall it. Avoid files advertised as “cracked Paint,” “portable MS Paint,” or “old Paint for every Windows version,” particularly when the download is an executable from an unfamiliar publisher.

- Prefer Microsoft’s own support and Store routes.
- Check the publisher before installing a Store app.
- Do not disable antivirus or Windows security warnings to force an installation.
- Do not enter payment details for a supposed basic Paint download.
- Be cautious of installers that bundle browser extensions, system cleaners, or unrelated programs.
Which Paint features should you expect?
The basic Paint experience covers everyday image work: drawing with a mouse or touch input, filling areas, adding shapes and text, cropping, resizing, and making simple edits. Newer Windows 11 updates may also include features such as Layers, Background Removal, and AI-powered Image Creator.
Those newer features are not guaranteed on every computer merely because Paint is installed. Availability can depend on your Windows update, Microsoft account or Entra ID account, internet access, supported hardware, language, and geographic market.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications explain that Paint Cocreator uses cloud services and requires an account and internet connection. Earlier Cocreator previews were limited to selected countries and initially required English input. Microsoft later described some Image Creator access as limited to specified preview markets and some capabilities as dependent on Copilot+ hardware. Treat these as feature-specific conditions, not requirements for opening ordinary Paint.

If you are looking for the familiar 2D MS Paint, install or open the current Paint app. Do not treat Paint 3D as its current replacement. Microsoft’s support material identifies Paint 3D as a Windows 10 application, and archived or unofficial “old version” installers are not a safe substitute for the current official Paint route.

Troubleshooting Paint installation
Paint appears in Start but will not open
Restart Windows and try launching Paint again. If your Windows settings offer app management controls, open the Paint entry and look for Advanced options. Microsoft’s Windows app troubleshooting guidance may provide Repair and Reset options:
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps and then Installed apps (the exact label can vary by Windows release).
- Find Paint, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Try Repair first. If that does not help, use Reset, understanding that resetting an app can remove its local app data.
Microsoft Store will not install Paint
- Confirm that Windows is connected to the internet.
- Sign in to Microsoft Store if requested.
- Install available Windows updates, then restart.
- Retry the Store installation or use Microsoft’s official Paint reinstall workflow.
- If other Store apps also fail, use Microsoft’s Windows app installation troubleshooting guidance rather than downloading a replacement installer from an unknown site.
The installer says the app is not supported
Check both your Windows edition/build and system architecture. Microsoft lists separate x64, x86/32-bit, and ARM64 Paint installers. A package for one architecture may not work on another. If the computer is running an older Windows release, do not force the installation; first determine whether that release meets Microsoft’s documented prerequisite.
My computer cannot use the newest Paint features
Basic Paint access and newer AI features are separate issues. A computer may run ordinary Paint while lacking the hardware, Windows update, account, internet connection, language, or regional availability required for a newer feature. If your device cannot meet the requirements for a particular Windows 11 feature, upgrading to a Windows 11-compatible PC may be necessary—but buying a new computer is not necessary simply to obtain basic Paint.

No. A USB drive is not required to open or reinstall Paint. Microsoft’s requirement for a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB applies to creating Windows installation media, such as when reinstalling Windows—not to the normal Paint installation process.

If you are repairing or reinstalling Windows itself, follow Microsoft’s separate installation-media instructions and back up important files first. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; that affects access to current Windows support and features, but it does not mean Paint is itself a paid Windows 11 download.

Does Paint require Windows 11?
Basic Paint is not described as requiring Windows 11; it is a Windows inbox app. However, Microsoft’s newer Paint features have their own update, account, internet, hardware, language, and regional conditions.
Is Paint 3D the same as MS Paint?
