Murin-an is a Kyoto villa built for Yamagata Aritomo between 1894 and 1896. Its significance lies in the way three contrasting buildings are composed with an open, water-fed garden: a sukiya-style main house frames the landscape, a Western-style house records Japan’s Meiji-era modernization, and a tearoom provides a deliberate place from which to view the garden. Beyond the property, borrowed Higashiyama scenery and water from the Lake Biwa Canal make the site feel larger than its walls.

What is Murin-an?

Murin-an is a late-nineteenth-century villa in Kyoto’s Nanzen-ji and Okazaki area. Yamagata Aritomo, a major political figure of the Meiji period, commissioned the residence, which was constructed from 1894 to 1896. The property is best understood as a coordinated estate rather than a garden with a house added beside it. Its three buildings and landscape were planned to be experienced together.

Kyoto Travel identifies the group as a Japanese main residence, a Western-style house and a tearoom. The combination reflects a period when Japanese builders and patrons were incorporating new architectural forms while continuing to develop highly refined traditional spaces. Murin-an therefore offers an unusually clear view of how a Meiji-era residence could hold different cultural and architectural references within one composition.

The phrase “perfect harmony” is an interpretation of that composition, not a documented quotation by Yamagata or a measurable historical claim. What can be observed is a carefully related sequence: rooms open toward the garden, the garden extends visually to the Higashiyama mountains, and canal water animates ponds and streams across the site.

Who built Murin-an, and when?

Yamagata Aritomo’s Kyoto villa

Yamagata Aritomo’s villa dates to 1894–96, a period when Kyoto was being reshaped after the Meiji Restoration. The property’s official history describes the surrounding Okazaki district changing from former estates and fields toward civic and cultural development. The Lake Biwa Canal project and the 1895 National Industrial Exposition contributed to that wider transformation; Murin-an was part of the changing district, not the sole cause of it.

Three buildings, three architectural roles

Building Documented character Role in the estate
Main house Sukiya-zukuri residence A living space closely connected to garden views
Western-style house Western architectural form A visible expression of Meiji-era modernization; a room was used for the Murin-an Conference discussions
Tearoom Modeled on the En’an tearoom of the Yabunouchi school and adapted by Yamagata A focused viewing place for the garden

The Western-style building contains a room associated with the Murin-an Conference. Kyoto Travel and the property’s own account state that former Prime Minister Ito Hirobumi and others used the room to discuss matters with Yamagata before the Russo-Japanese War. The documented point is the room’s use for that discussion; broader claims about the conference’s historical consequences go beyond the available description.

How does the house connect to the garden?

The main house as a viewing frame

The main residence is described as sukiya-zukuri, a mode of architecture associated with tea-house design and careful relationships between interior and exterior. At Murin-an, the garden is not an isolated vista encountered only after stepping outside. The arrangement of rooms, openings and edges lets the landscape function as part of the residence itself. A visitor can read the house as a sequence of frames that set the garden’s depth, movement and changing light against interior space.

This relationship differs from treating architecture as a self-contained object. The house gains much of its character from what it admits: lawn, water, plantings and the distant mountain line. Conversely, the garden is experienced through thresholds and rooms that regulate how much of the scene appears at once.

The tearoom as an intentional viewpoint

The tearoom was modeled as a replica of the En’an tearoom of the Yabunouchi school, then adapted by Yamagata as a place from which to view the garden. Its importance is not simply that it is a traditional-style building. It makes looking part of the architecture’s purpose. The tearoom gives the garden a human scale and encourages attention to composed views rather than treating the grounds as a route to be crossed quickly.

What makes Murin-an’s garden distinctive?

An open lawn instead of a closed scene

Murin-an’s garden includes a bright, open lawn. That openness is a major part of its identity. Rather than relying exclusively on tightly enclosed groves, rock groupings or heavily layered planting, the design allows a broad field of grass to carry the eye across the property. The lawn creates visual breathing room around the buildings and gives the garden a changing character as weather and daylight move over it.

Borrowed Higashiyama scenery

The Higashiyama mountains form the garden’s borrowed scenery, or shakkei. They are not merely a distant backdrop added for decoration. By incorporating the mountain profile into the composition, the garden visually exceeds its boundary. The eye moves from the lawn and nearer plantings to the wider landscape, making the surrounding geography part of the designed view.

Water supplied by the Lake Biwa Canal

Water from the Lake Biwa Canal feeds Murin-an’s pond and streams. This infrastructure gives the garden a moving, continuous element rather than a purely static arrangement of stones and plants. The canal connection is also a reminder that the villa’s landscape depended on the technological and civic changes transforming Kyoto in the same era.

A stream that resembles a natural brook

Kyoto Travel describes a dynamic stream whose appearance and motion resemble a natural brook. The effect is naturalistic, but it is not accidental: the route, banks and relationship to the lawn are designed. Flowing water introduces sound, reflected light and movement, changing the experience from one viewpoint to another and preventing the garden from becoming a single frozen picture.

The property’s official garden description presents Murin-an as a forerunner of modern Japanese gardens in Kyoto. That wording should be read carefully. It identifies the garden’s influence and modern character without claiming that Murin-an was the first or only modern Japanese garden.

How the composition creates the impression of harmony

Several documented decisions work together to produce the effect implied by the title:

  • The sukiya-style main house places domestic rooms in an intimate relationship with the landscape.
  • The tearoom turns viewing into a specific architectural activity.
  • The Western-style house introduces a contrasting form instead of forcing the entire estate into one historical idiom.
  • The open lawn gives the garden a spacious center and keeps views legible.
  • Borrowed Higashiyama scenery extends the visual field beyond the property.
  • Canal-fed water supplies both the pond and moving streams, adding sound and motion.

These elements are not identical, and their differences matter. Harmony here does not mean uniformity. It means that contrasting buildings, open ground, distant mountains and engineered water are arranged so that each supports the others in a visitor’s experience.

Murin-an in the context of Meiji-era Kyoto

The villa belongs to a moment of rapid change. After the Meiji Restoration, Kyoto’s former aristocratic estates and open fields in the Okazaki area were increasingly joined by civic, cultural and industrial projects. The Lake Biwa Canal brought water and infrastructure, while the 1895 National Industrial Exposition helped establish the district as a setting for public development.

Murin-an’s architecture mirrors that transition on a smaller scale. A traditional sukiya residence and a tea-oriented viewing space coexist with a Western-style building. The estate does not present modernization as a complete replacement of Japanese forms. Instead, it places new and established architectural languages in one working residence.

The garden’s use of canal water makes the same point environmentally. Its naturalistic stream depends on a modern water system, while its borrowed mountain view invokes a longer Japanese landscape tradition. Murin-an’s character emerges from that overlap between infrastructure, inherited design practices and a changing urban setting.

Heritage status and what it signifies

Murin-an was designated a national Place of Scenic Beauty in 1951. The designation recognizes the significance of the garden as a cultural landscape, not just the age of an individual building. Its value rests in the coordinated estate: architecture, water, lawn, planting and borrowed scenery remain legible as parts of one design.

That status also helps explain why the property should be approached as a composed environment. Looking only at the main house would miss the canal-fed stream; looking only at the garden would miss the rooms and tearoom that shape its views. The heritage importance lies in the relationship.

Garden visits and guided tours

Kyoto Travel lists guided garden tours. Some tours and experiences require reservations and fees, and schedules can change. Check Murin-an’s official visitor information before planning a visit rather than relying on an old timetable or price.

Tea experience in the tearoom

The site also offers a tea ceremony experience with matcha in the tearoom. This is especially relevant to the architecture because the tearoom was adapted as a garden-viewing space. Availability, booking requirements and charges should be confirmed directly with the property.

Café and address

A café is listed among the visitor services. Murin-an’s address is 31 Nanzenji Kusakawa-cho, Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. The listed address identifies the site; it does not establish current access conditions, opening hours or transportation arrangements.

Nearby destinations

Kyoto Travel lists Nanzen-ji Temple, Heian-jingu Shrine and the Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art as nearby destinations. They provide sensible itinerary context, but current operating conditions and practical travel times should be checked separately.

How to look at Murin-an on site

  1. Begin with the overall relationship. Notice how the main house, Western-style house and tearoom occupy different architectural positions within one estate.
  2. Read the main house from the garden. Look for the way openings and edges make rooms feel connected to the lawn and water.
  3. Find the open center. Observe how the lawn establishes distance and prevents the composition from becoming visually dense.
  4. Follow the water. Trace the pond and stream, listening for changes in sound and watching how moving water redirects attention.
  5. Look beyond the property. Identify the Higashiyama mountains as borrowed scenery and consider how they enlarge the garden’s apparent scale.
  6. Use the tearoom as a viewpoint. Compare the framed scene from inside with the more expansive view experienced outdoors.
  7. Keep the historical layers together. The canal, the Meiji-era Western building, the sukiya residence and the tea-oriented space belong to one evolving Kyoto story.

What Murin-an does—and does not—claim to be

Murin-an is not documented here as the first Japanese modern garden, the only villa to combine Japanese and Western buildings, or a site defined by a verified quotation about “perfect harmony.” It is more precise to call it a notable early example of modern Japanese garden design in Kyoto, set within a Meiji-era villa where architecture and landscape were deliberately interdependent.

Its distinctiveness comes from the specific combination: a 1894–96 residence for Yamagata Aritomo; three buildings with different architectural identities; an open lawn; Higashiyama borrowed scenery; and a pond and streams supplied by the Lake Biwa Canal. Together they explain why Murin-an feels less like a building surrounded by scenery than a single composition made from rooms, water, grass and mountain view.
