The Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building is the University of California, San Francisco’s five-story home for psychiatric clinical care, research and education in Dogpatch. Its defining feature is a daylit atrium that rises through all five floors. Bridges, waiting rooms, consultation rooms, laboratories and shared work areas face this central void, making it both the building’s social center and its primary wayfinding device.
Completed in April 2022, the facility was designed to make mental-health care feel less institutional and to bring clinicians, researchers, educators, adults and children into one coordinated setting. Those are design intentions, not published evidence of improved clinical outcomes; the project sources describe architecture and goals rather than patient-effect measurements.

What the Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building is
The building houses UCSF’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Its program combines outpatient clinical spaces, research facilities, teaching areas and shared amenities instead of separating those functions into unrelated buildings. Adults and children use the facility, while faculty and programs connected with psychiatry, neurology, pediatrics, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, and anesthesiology also work there.
Architectural Record’s July 2022 profile reports 173,000 square feet and an April 2022 completion date. An undated project description from SKS Partners lists the property at 150,000 square feet and says the first patients arrived in October 2021. The sources do not explain whether the difference reflects measurement methods or a difference in project scope, so neither figure should be treated as a corrected version of the other.

SKS Partners, in a joint venture with Prado Group, says the venture owns the building and leases it to UCSF for collaborative clinical care and research. The same project description reports a philanthropic gift of nearly $60 million from John Pritzker and Lisa Stone Pritzker.
The atrium is the building’s organizing system
The five-story atrium does more than create a dramatic interior view. It allows daylight to reach deep into the floor plates, provides sightlines between levels and gives visitors a persistent reference point. Bridges cross the void, so moving from one department to another means repeatedly reconnecting with the same central space rather than navigating a sequence of opaque corridors.

Rooms are arranged around that core. Architectural Record describes consultation rooms, dry laboratories, open-plan workspaces, staff lounges, huddle areas and waiting rooms facing the atrium. Clinical functions are largely grouped on one side and research on the other, while staff areas occupy the perimeter. This arrangement keeps related work distinct without making the departments feel disconnected.
At the base of the atrium is a 175-seat auditorium with meeting rooms. Children’s spaces occupy lower levels, and adult spaces are positioned above them. The vertical organization gives the building a legible sequence: shared public and teaching functions at the center and base, child-focused care near its dedicated entrance, and adult clinical programs higher in the building.
How the central space helps with orientation
Wayfinding is a stated architectural purpose, not just an aesthetic benefit. Design principal Dwight Long of Perkins&Will said, “I never feel like I’m lost in this building.” The atrium lets a visitor see the building’s height, bridges and neighboring floors at once. Waiting areas facing inward can orient patients toward that visible center, while the circulation network remains understandable from multiple levels.

The design does not eliminate the need for signs, staff assistance or accessible routes. A large atrium can be visually complex, and the sources provide no independent wayfinding study. What is established is the strategy: a single, daylit reference space is used to organize movement and make departments easier to locate.

Dr. Matthew State, professor and chair of UCSF’s Department of Psychiatry, described the brief as “this complicated, four-dimensional puzzle that includes research, education, clinical care, pediatrics, and psychiatry.” The plan answers that complexity by stacking and grouping programs around a common spatial framework rather than treating each specialty as an isolated suite.
Separate access for children, teens and families
The Child, Teen and Family Center has its own entrance on Tennessee Street. The separate approach grew from a concern described by Dan Kingsley, managing partner at SKS Partners: children visiting another facility might encounter distressing conditions intended for adults. His account explains the project’s reasoning for a distinct child-focused arrival sequence; it is not evidence that every psychiatric facility should use the same arrangement.
Architectural Record describes the entrance as semiresidential in character. Plantings and wood benches create a stoop-like setting, and a nearby display features photographs made by teen photographers. These details give the arrival area a domestic, neighborhood-scaled identity while keeping it connected to the larger medical building.
Children’s spaces are on lower floors, while adult spaces are above. The sources do not provide a room-by-room schedule, patient capacity or a separate pediatric area measurement, so those details cannot be inferred from the overall floor area.

Daylight, acoustics and a connection to outdoors
Floating baffles hang within the atrium. They are described as serving both light and acoustic control: shaping how daylight is distributed and helping manage sound in a tall, hard-working circulation space. The project sources do not publish decibel readings or a post-occupancy acoustic study, so the baffles should be understood as a design response, not a quantified performance claim.
The developer says the atrium brings daylight deep into the building and maintains a connection to nature. A landscaped rooftop garden or roof deck extends that idea outdoors. SKS Partners says patients and staff can access the roof deck; Architectural Record specifies that patient access is supervised. No schedule, capacity or access policy beyond that supervision is given.
These features support the stated ambition of a calmer, more welcoming setting. They do not establish that daylight, planting or roof access caused measurable changes in anxiety, recovery, satisfaction or other mental-health outcomes. The reviewed project sources contain no named patient-outcome statistic.
How the building responds to Dogpatch
Dogpatch’s industrial and dockside history sits alongside newer housing and public space. The building uses different facade treatments to address those surroundings rather than presenting one identical elevation on every side.
The Third Street frontage is described as more monumental. At the Tennessee Street end, the scale is adjusted toward nearby Victorian houses, and that is where the children’s entrance is located. Exterior materials named in Architectural Record include metal panels, glass curtain walls, limestone and wood. ZGF design principal Justin Brooks explained the rationale this way: “The materials are derived from some of the textures that you see in the existing fabric.”

The result is a building that signals a major civic and medical institution on one street while offering a more domestic threshold on another. That contrast is a neighborhood response, not a claim that the building disappears into its surroundings.

Architects, builders and consultants
ZGF Architects is identified as the architect, with Jan Willemse, Solvei Neiger and Justin Brooks listed on the team. Perkins&Will served as exterior architect of record. Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction was the general contractor.
Architectural Record credits Tipping Structural Engineers for structural engineering; Interface Engineering for mechanical, electrical and plumbing work; Luk and Associates for civil engineering; Salter for acoustics; MSLA for landscape architecture; RDH Building Science for the envelope; and Luma Lighting Design with PAE Engineers for lighting. SKS Partners identifies its joint venture with Prado Group as the developer.
Project credits also name commercial systems and suppliers: Van-Mulder Sheet Metal and POHL for metal panels; Upofloor, Tarkett and Mondo for resilient flooring; AGA for skylights; and USG, Armstrong and FSorb for acoustical ceilings. These are specifications for this institutional project, not a list of consumer products or a recommendation for a home renovation.
What the architecture can—and cannot—demonstrate
The building clearly demonstrates a set of planning and design decisions: a central atrium used for orientation, daylight and shared identity; a deliberate separation of clinical and research zones; common teaching and meeting space; a distinct child and family entrance; supervised access to landscaped outdoor space; and facades calibrated to different neighborhood contexts.

Project leaders also describe a broader purpose. Kingsley said, “The purpose of this building was to bring everybody together in a much less institutional building than you traditionally see with UC campuses.” Long called it “a beautiful, friendly, welcoming space for mental health care.” State said the building should communicate the value placed on patients and be “beautiful and light and optimistic.”
Those quotations document the team’s goals and perceptions. They should not be recast as proof that the building reduced stigma, improved treatment, increased attendance or changed clinical outcomes. The available sources report no patient-satisfaction survey, behavioral-health metric, comparative study or post-occupancy evaluation establishing such effects.

Why the atrium matters to the project’s idea of care
In this building, the atrium is the link between an architectural gesture and an operational brief. It gives a complex department a shared address, allows different specialties to remain visible to one another, and offers visitors a stable point of reference. The child-focused entrance and the differentiated street facades extend the same logic outward: care is organized not only by room type, but also by how people arrive, wait, move and encounter the institution.
That approach makes the Nancy Friend Pritzker Psychiatry Building a useful case study in healthcare architecture. Its significance lies in how space, daylight, acoustics, circulation and neighborhood scale are assembled around mental-health programs—not in a proven therapeutic effect that the project sources do not measure.
