“Nano Banana” is Google’s nickname for Gemini’s image-generation and image-editing models—not a separate app. The original viral model was Gemini 2.5 Flash Image; Google now positions Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) as the general-purpose option and Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) for more demanding, professional work. You can try the trends below in Gemini, Google AI Studio, or the Gemini API, although model names, controls and limits vary by account, country and plan.

The phrase “broke the internet” is headline shorthand, not an independently audited measurement. Google and coverage such as Tom’s Guide’s 2025 report described exceptional user and image-generation growth. The useful part for you is simpler: upload a suitable reference photo, describe the complete visual brief, and refine the result conversationally.

Which Nano Banana should you use in 2026?

Task Best fit
Ordinary edits, style transfers and social images Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image)
Fast, high-volume experimentation Nano Banana 2 Lite (Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image)
Complex compositions, precise text, professional production Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image)
Older tutorials referring to the first viral model Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5 Flash Image)

Google describes Nano Banana 2 as the balance of performance, cost and latency, Lite as the speed-and-cost option, and Pro as the higher-reasoning production model. Lite is not optimized for many reference images or long sequential edits. The original Gemini 2.5 Flash Image remains a legacy reference rather than the current flagship. See Google’s current image-generation documentation.

How to try the trends in Gemini

  1. Open Gemini and start a new conversation.
  2. Select the image-generation or “Create image” control if it appears for your account.
  3. Upload one clear reference photo when the image should resemble you. Availability and labels differ by country, age, account and rollout.
  4. Paste one prompt below and replace the bracketed text.
  5. Generate, then request targeted corrections instead of restarting. Gemini’s current interface—not screenshots from older articles—is authoritative.

Google recommends beginning with verbs such as “draw,” “generate” or “create,” followed by the subject, action, setting, style and other visual details (Gemini help).

Reference-photo checklist

  • Use a well-lit, sharp image with the face unobstructed.
  • Show the whole body when requesting a full-body composition.
  • Choose a pose close to the final scene—for example, sitting if the generated scene requires sitting. This is a practical observation, not a guarantee.
  • Avoid heavy filters, motion blur and extreme angles.
  • For several people or objects, upload clear references and assign names such as “Maya” and “Scout.”

Five viral-style prompts

1. Collectible action-figure packaging

This works because it defines the subject, container, props, lighting, composition and exact label.

Use the uploaded photo as the identity reference. Turn me into a premium collectible action figure displayed inside a realistic retail toy box. Preserve my recognizable facial features, hairstyle, skin tone, and general proportions. Add a clear plastic window, believable packaging graphics, a product name reading “[NAME],” and three small accessories related to “[HOBBY OR JOB].” Use studio product photography, soft reflections on the plastic, accurate shadows, and a front-facing 4:5 composition. Make the text on the packaging legible and spell “[NAME]” exactly.

Best follow-up: “Keep the figure, box and lighting unchanged. Correct only the label to exactly ‘[NAME]’; remove all other lettering.” Small package text can still be wrong, so fix it separately rather than regenerating everything.

2. Polaroid-style memory

Create a candid instant-film photograph of the person in the uploaded image with “[FRIEND, PET, OR SUBJECT]” at “[LOCATION].” Preserve the person’s identity and natural expression. Use a square composition, imperfect framing, a thick white instant-photo border, slightly faded colors, mild overexposure, soft focus, subtle film grain, and a handwritten caption reading “[CAPTION]” along the bottom border. Make it feel like a genuine personal snapshot rather than a polished studio portrait.

Add “direct flash” for a party look or “warm indoor tungsten lighting” for a late-night memory. If likeness matters most, append: “Do not alter the person’s facial structure.”

  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

3. A different decade

Reimagine the person in the uploaded image as a realistic portrait from the 1970s. Preserve their identity, age, body proportions, and expression, but change the clothing, hairstyle, color palette, lighting, and environment to match the period. Place them in a warmly lit disco lounge with period-appropriate clothing, analog film grain, and believable 1970s interior design. Use a vertical 4:5 composition and make the image look like an authentic archival photograph, not a modern person wearing a costume.

Swap in another era and its visual signals: 1920s art deco and sepia light; 1950s diner, jukebox and saturated color; 1980s neon arcade and bold colors; or 1990s grunge, sitcom styling and a video-store setting. Google’s prompt guide recommends stating an aspect ratio such as 4:3, 1:1 or 9:16.

4. Join an original television-style scene

Using the uploaded photo as the identity reference, place me as a natural background character in an original 1990s sitcom-style living-room scene. Preserve my likeness and place me seated on the sofa, laughing with the other characters. Use warm three-camera sitcom lighting, a casual apartment set, period-appropriate clothing, and a 16:9 television-frame composition. Do not reproduce any exact episode, script, logo, or copyrighted character; create an original scene that evokes the era and genre.

This is more reliable and safer than demanding an exact episode or named character. A request involving a recognizable franchise may be refused, generalized or altered because of copyright, trademark, likeness or safety safeguards.

5. Become part of a famous-art style

Use the uploaded portrait as the identity reference and place me into a scene inspired by early-20th-century expressionist painting. Preserve my recognizable face and pose me on a bridge above a dark, winding river. Use dramatic swirling brushstrokes, intense red and blue tones, distorted perspective, and a heightened emotional atmosphere. The result should be an original artwork with no copied signature, frame, watermark, or museum label. Keep my figure integrated into the painted environment rather than placing two separate images side by side.

“Inspired by” wording and broad characteristics are preferable to requesting an exact reproduction of a living artist’s work. Public-domain references such as broad art movements are a safer starting point than copying a museum image exactly.

A reusable prompt formula

For any trend, specify: identity reference + subject/action + setting + era or style + lighting + camera angle + composition/aspect ratio + required text + what must remain unchanged. Positive spatial instructions are generally more useful than a long list of negatives: “Seat the subject on the left side of the sofa, keep both hands visible and leave clear space on the right.”

Iterate instead of starting over

  1. Generate the broad composition.
  2. Correct placement: “Move me farther left and keep the same lighting.”
  3. Fix anatomy: “Keep both feet visible and both hands on the table.”
  4. Correct lettering in a separate pass, with required words in quotation marks.
  5. Request a crop such as “same image, vertical 9:16.”
  6. Ask for cleanup: “Preserve the face, clothing and background; remove only the extra fingers.”

You can request distinct variants in one prompt: “Create four versions with the same identity and pose, using golden-hour, direct-flash, soft-studio and neon-night lighting.”

Common failures and fixes

The face does not look like me
Use a sharper, less filtered reference; state which facial traits must remain; simplify the transformation; or generate the person and background separately.
The pose or anatomy is wrong
Give explicit geometry: “seated on the left, both feet visible, hands apart, clear space between subject and table.”
Text is nonsense
Put exact words in quotation marks, describe placement and typography, and request a spelling-only correction. Always proofread the final image.
The artwork becomes a split screen
Say: “Produce one unified canvas. Paint the uploaded person into the same perspective, lighting and brushwork. No collage, split screen, side-by-side comparison or duplicate.”
The result is blocked or changed
Remove exact franchise scenes, living-person impersonation, logos and commercial claims. Ask for an original scene that evokes a genre or period instead.

Privacy, rights and availability

Do not upload identity documents, sensitive medical images or someone else’s private photo without permission. Be especially cautious with children’s images. Google says Gemini Apps may remove images when systems detect possible violations of its terms or prohibited-use policies (support details).

A generated likeness, celebrity image, logo or copyrighted character is not automatically cleared for advertising or resale. Check permissions before commercial use. Personal Intelligence features have additional conditions, including being 18 or older in the United States, using a personal Google Account and having the relevant Google Photos access; availability varies.

Do you need to pay?

Try the free Gemini route or Google AI Studio first. A Google AI plan can provide higher limits and storage, but “higher” does not mean unlimited Nano Banana Pro generations; check current plan terms. Use the Gemini API when you are building an automated or high-volume workflow, not merely to try five prompts. API image pricing, quotas and model availability change, so consult Google’s live pricing page. Nano Banana 2 is listed there at roughly $0.067 per 1K image on the standard paid tier, while Pro costs more; these are API charges, not a statement about consumer Gemini access.

Google’s documentation says its older Imagen models were scheduled for shutdown on August 17, 2026, with migration to Nano Banana models recommended. That deadline has passed, so new workflows should target the current Nano Banana family rather than Imagen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nano Banana a separate app?

No. It is Google’s nickname for Gemini image models, available through Gemini, Google AI Studio, the Gemini API and some partner products.

Can I use Nano Banana on a phone?

Usually, yes, through the Gemini mobile app or mobile web interface when image creation is enabled for your account. Labels and availability vary by country, age, plan and rollout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Gemini change my face?

Identity preservation is a capability, not a guarantee. Use a clear, unobstructed reference, request that facial structure and expression remain unchanged, and simplify the transformation before adding more details.

Can I use the generated image commercially?

Do not assume so. Rights for your likeness, other people, celebrities, trademarks, copyrighted characters and source material may still apply. Check permissions and applicable licenses before advertising or resale.

Why did a prompt work for one Gemini account but not another?

Model access, safety behavior, regional availability, account age, plan limits and staged feature rollouts differ. The controls visible in your current Gemini interface determine what you can use.

The Bottom Line

For most readers, start with Nano Banana 2 in Gemini, upload a clean reference photo and treat the first result as a draft. Detailed visual instructions plus small, conversational corrections produce more dependable results than a supposed magic phrase; Nano Banana Pro is worth considering only when the composition, text, reasoning or output resolution truly demands it.
