NanoCoat Clear is a transparent, water-repellent treatment intended to make glass easier to clean, not a self-cleaning or heat-control film. ITC says it helps reduce the adhesion of scale, salt, soap scum, dirt and similar contaminants on surfaces such as shower screens, windows and facades. The company also says consumers can apply it, provided they prepare the glass properly and follow the instructions supplied with the purchase.
The important qualifications are practical: the supplier estimates a typical life of three to five years, coverage is only an estimate, and the available product information does not include a complete step-by-step application manual or independent performance testing. Treat the figures below as manufacturer or publisher claims rather than guarantees.

What NanoCoat Clear is designed to do
ITC International Trading & Consulting describes NanoCoat Clear as an invisible, non-stick, water-repellent barrier that chemically bonds to glass. In the supplier’s description, the treatment limits how strongly mineral scale, salt, soap residue, dirt and other contaminants adhere. Water should run off more readily, leaving fewer deposits that require scrubbing.
ITC also says the coating does not change the appearance or clarity of the glass and is not affected by long-term heat or ultraviolet exposure. Those are statements from the supplier, not results from an independently published laboratory study. The product should therefore be evaluated as a maintenance aid, rather than assumed to provide a measured optical, thermal or energy-saving benefit.

The name “NanoCoat” is used for more than one type of glass product. NanoCoat Clear’s described purpose is water and contaminant repellency. A similarly named coating marketed primarily for reducing solar heat or ultraviolet transmission would be a different product category with different specifications. Check the exact product name, technical sheet and intended function before buying or applying anything.
Which glass surfaces can be treated?
ITC lists the following intended applications for NanoCoat Clear:
- Residential and commercial windows
- Shower screens
- Building facades
- Balustrades and pool fencing
- Skylights
- Automotive glass
- Glazed ceramic, in addition to glass
That range includes both new and existing installations, but compatibility still needs to be checked at the individual surface. Existing glass should be sound, clean and free of residues that would prevent an even bond. ITC specifically warns that cloudy glass with scale or salt damage that cannot be cleaned away should be repaired before coating. Applying a transparent treatment over permanent etching or damage will not restore the original surface.
Does it make glass self-cleaning?
No. “Easier to clean” is the accurate description. Rain or rinse water may carry away more contamination from a water-repellent surface, but the treatment does not eliminate routine wiping, especially on shower glass, sheltered windows, vehicle glass or surfaces exposed to greasy pollution.

ITC recommends regular wiping with a wet microfiber cloth. Its shop listing also recommends a NanoCoat Surface Care product for monthly maintenance. That monthly product is a retailer recommendation, not an independently established requirement for the coating to work. Harsh chemical cleaners can shorten the coating’s life, so use the care method and cleaner specified with your purchase rather than assuming that a stronger solvent or abrasive will improve results.
How easy is application in practice?
The seller’s FAQ says consumers can apply NanoCoat Clear and that instructions are supplied with the purchase. ITC calls the application simple, but the public information reviewed here does not provide the complete manual: it does not specify an applicator type, dwell time, curing period, ideal temperature, removal technique or recoat interval. Those details should come from the product instructions for the container you receive.
A responsible preparation and application plan looks like this:
- Confirm the product and surface. Verify that you have NanoCoat Clear rather than another “NanoCoat” product, and check that the glass, glazing, seals and any existing surface treatment are compatible.
- Inspect for permanent damage. Remove scale, salt deposits, soap film and other contamination. If the glass remains cloudy because it is etched or damaged, repair or replace the affected pane before coating.
- Clean the surface completely. The ITC FAQ says the surface should be cleaned before application. Any residue left behind can become trapped under the film or interfere with bonding.
- Estimate the quantity. ITC gives an approximate use rate of 10 millilitres per square metre. Measure the total glass area and allow for the fact that real coverage varies with surface condition and application technique.
- Follow the supplied instructions exactly. Apply the product using the method, amount and sequence in the manual included with your purchase. Do not invent a curing or polishing step that the instructions do not specify.
- Keep the treated surface clean while it is being put into service. Use only the post-application care method supplied by ITC or the seller, and record the treatment date so future maintenance and reapplication decisions are based on the actual installation.
For a large facade, high-level glazing, a fleet of vehicles or any installation where access is difficult, ITC says it can arrange an applicator. Professional application can be useful when consistent preparation and coverage matter more than the convenience of a small do-it-yourself job.

Coverage: what a 250 ml container can realistically cover
ITC’s retail listing identifies a 250 ml container and estimates approximately 25 square metres of coverage. That figure follows directly from the FAQ’s approximate rate of 10 ml per square metre:
250 ml ÷ 10 ml per square metre = approximately 25 square metres.
Both numbers are vendor estimates. They are not a guaranteed yield for every pane, applicator or level of contamination. Edges, porous residues, rework and uneven application can increase consumption. Measure the glass before ordering, and retain enough product to finish a continuous area rather than stopping partway through a room or vehicle.
How long does NanoCoat Clear last?
ITC gives a typical life of three to five years in most conditions. The FAQ qualifies that estimate by the age of the glass and environmental exposure. A sheltered interior shower screen and a facade exposed to salt spray, abrasive dust, frequent washing or intense weathering should not be expected to experience identical service life.

This is a supplier estimate, not a warranty or a guaranteed replacement interval. Cleaning chemistry, abrasion, construction activity, water hardness and the quality of the original preparation can all affect when water repellency becomes less noticeable. Keep the purchase record and inspect performance over time instead of scheduling an automatic recoat solely from the upper end of the estimate.
What maintenance should owners expect?
Routine care is deliberately simple: ITC says regular wiping with a wet microfiber cloth is sufficient. The purpose is to remove the small amount of material that still settles on the surface before it dries into a thicker deposit. A coating reduces adhesion; it does not prevent airborne particles or bathroom residue from arriving on the glass.

- Use a clean, wet microfiber cloth for ordinary wiping.
- Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, which ITC says can reduce coating life.
- Do not use abrasive pads or aggressive scraping unless the supplied care instructions explicitly permit them.
- For shower screens and other high-deposit areas, wipe more frequently rather than waiting for a heavy mineral layer.
- If you use the retailer’s recommended Surface Care product monthly, treat that as an optional maintenance recommendation and follow its label.
If water stops beading or the surface becomes as difficult to clean as untreated glass, first check whether the problem is residue buildup or cleaner damage. A failure to bead is not, by itself, proof that the glass needs another coat; clean according to the instructions and assess the underlying glass condition.
What NanoCoat Clear does not provide
- It is not a solar-control film. The product information describes water and contaminant repellency, not a quantified reduction in heat gain, ultraviolet transmission or energy use.
- It is not a repair for etched glass. Permanent cloudiness or salt damage should be repaired before treatment.
- It is not maintenance-free. Wet microfiber wiping remains part of normal care.
- It is not proven by an independent comparative test in the sources available here. The reviewed material contains product copy and a product-news report, not a named laboratory study or test protocol.
- It is not guaranteed to last five years. Three to five years is the supplier’s typical estimate under varying conditions.
How to compare glass coatings without mixing up their jobs

This approach prevents a water-repellent treatment from being judged against a heat-control product on the wrong criteria. A coating that reduces soap and mineral adhesion is solving a different maintenance problem from a film designed to alter solar transmission.
How strong is the “90% less maintenance” claim?
A 19 December 2012 product-news item from Architecture & Design reported a NanoCoat claim of up to 90% maintenance reduction. The article does not state a test protocol, baseline cleaning schedule, surface type, exposure conditions or independent evaluator. Treat “up to 90%” as a historical marketing claim, not a performance result that can be expected on every shower, window or facade.

When NanoCoat Clear is a sensible choice
It is most sensible where the main nuisance is repeated water spotting, mineral scale, salt residue or soap film on otherwise serviceable glass. Shower screens, pool fencing near treated or salt water, coastal glazing and hard-to-reach windows are logical candidates because reducing adhesion can make routine wiping less laborious.
It is less appropriate when the actual requirement is solar heat reduction, UV filtering, privacy tint, scratch resistance or restoration of etched glass. In those cases, select a treatment engineered and tested for that function rather than relying on the NanoCoat name.
Questions to settle before you buy
- What exact surface area will be treated, and does the estimated 10 ml per square metre leave enough margin?
- Is the glass merely dirty, or is it permanently etched or salt-damaged?
- Will existing films, hydrophobic treatments, sealants or decorative finishes affect compatibility?
- Can you work safely and evenly, or is an applicator needed for height, access or project scale?
- Which cleaning products will be used afterward, and are they compatible with the coating?
- Are you choosing the product for easier cleaning rather than for heat or UV control?
Bottom line for homeowners and facilities teams
NanoCoat Clear is presented as an invisible water-repellent glass treatment that can reduce the effort needed to remove scale, salt, soap residue and dirt. The practical requirements are straightforward but not optional: clean and inspect the glass first, repair irreversible damage, calculate quantity from the approximate 10 ml-per-square-metre rate, and follow the instructions supplied with the product. A 250 ml container is listed at approximately 25 square metres of coverage.
Plan on continued microfiber cleaning and treat the three-to-five-year service-life figure, the unchanged-clarity statement and the historical “up to 90%” maintenance claim as supplier or publisher claims rather than independently verified guarantees. If the goal is water-spot and residue control, NanoCoat Clear fits that brief; if the goal is heat rejection, UV control or glass repair, it is the wrong comparison.
