When was National Doctors’ Day 2025?
In the United States, National Doctors’ Day fell on Sunday, March 30, 2025. The American Medical Association (AMA) identifies March 30 as the annual date for the observance. Why is Doctors’ Day on March 30?
The date connects to March 30, 1842, when physician Crawford W. Long first administered anesthesia in Jefferson, Georgia. The first Doctors’ Day observance was held on March 30, 1933, in Winder, Georgia. U.S. Census Bureau: Doctors’ Day
Who organized the first observance?
The fuller history reproduced by the U.S. Census Bureau identifies Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, as the person who conceived the observance; the Barrow County Alliance held the first event. The AMA’s brief 2025 overview instead credits Charles B. Almond with initiating the first celebration. The accounts differ in how they describe the roles, so it is useful to distinguish the conception and organization attributed to Eudora from the shorter summary’s credit to Charles. How can you recognize a doctor?
A sincere thank-you is enough; a card is optional, not an expectation. Patients might express appreciation with a note, while hospitals and health systems may choose a small gift, reception, or simple words of thanks. These are examples, not required customs. AMA: National Doctors’ Day
In a 2022 AMA interview, Susan R. Bailey, MD, described the early practice of sending thank-you cards and placing flowers on deceased doctors’ graves, including Long’s. That historical detail is not a general recommendation to send flowers to a physician. Bailey also emphasized that appreciation and support for physicians should continue throughout the year. What does the Census Bureau’s physician statistic count?
The Census Bureau’s 2024 Doctors’ Day feature reports 733,169 “other physicians,” with a margin of error of ±16,095, from the 2022 American Community Survey one-year estimates, detailed occupation table B24124.
