National Dog Day 2025 was Tuesday, August 26. Founded in 2004, the observance celebrates dogs and encourages people to support rescue and adoption. Although the date has passed, its meaning—and the simple ways to help dogs—remain relevant year-round.

Who founded National Dog Day, and why is it on August 26?
According to National Dog Day, the organization behind the observance, Colleen Paige founded it in 2004. The organization says Paige chose August 26 because her family adopted her first dog, a Shetland Sheepdog, on that date when she was 10. This is the organizer’s account of the holiday’s origin.
What does National Dog Day recognize?
The organizer says the day celebrates dogs of all kinds, including mixed-breed and purebred companions, and honors family and working dogs. It also draws attention to dogs in need of rescue and encourages adoption and support for shelters and rescue groups.

Operation Kindness reported that it took in 3,473 dogs in 2024 in an article published August 21, 2025. That figure describes the organization’s own intake, not dog shelters nationally.

Is National Dog Day a good time to give a dog a treat or toy?
A treat or toy can be an optional way to celebrate a dog, but it is not the point of the observance. Choose items suited to that dog, and do not assume a purchase supports a shelter unless the seller identifies a specific, verifiable donation arrangement. The organizer’s central emphasis is celebrating dogs and helping those who need rescue.
