Bhujodi, near Bhuj in Gujarat’s Kutch region, is known for textiles woven by the Vankar community. Their motifs are made on the loom, not embroidered onto finished cloth. Observed in India every 7 August, National Handloom Day offers a moment to recognize the weavers and the craft’s long history—one described in local accounts as centuries old, though its precise origins are not firmly established.
What is Bhujodi weaving, and where is Bhujodi?
Bhujodi is a village and weaving centre in Kutch, close to Bhuj, Gujarat. The craft is associated with the Vankar community. Incredible India says the weavers are believed to have migrated from Rajasthan about 500 years ago; a local craft-centre account describes the tradition more broadly as several centuries old. These are reported histories, not a precisely verified migration date.
Bhujodi weaving belongs to Kutch’s wider craft landscape, which also includes dyeing, printing and embroidery. Those are distinct practices: Bhujodi describes woven textiles, not embroidery or bandhani.

In Bhujodi weaving, the design is formed as the cloth is made. Incredible India describes a process in which the weaver counts threads by hand and, between regular weft insertions, uses a small shuttle carrying a different-coloured yarn to create motifs. Because the pattern is part of the woven structure, it is not embroidery added to a completed piece.

A Government of India handloom database entry for a Kutch (Bhujodi) cotton-silk saree identifies plain weave and extra-weft work. It describes an asymmetric geometric pattern woven on a traditional pit loom or frame loom, with pattern sizes varied across the saree for a non-repetitive appearance; the entry also mentions natural indigo and silk.
That database estimates 12–15 days to make the listed saree. The figure applies to that product entry, indexed circa 2020, and should not be taken as a standard production time for every Bhujodi textile.

How did the craft serve local communities?
The Handloom Design Center account connects Vankar weavers with Rabari pastoral families, who raised sheep. In that account, weavers made woollen garments including the dhabla blanket and loodi veil; some woven cloth was also passed to Khatri dyers. It describes a relationship between pastoral life and textile making, rather than a single unchanging product tradition.

What do Bhujodi weavers make today?
Woollen shawls and blankets remain central to descriptions of the tradition, while the range of textiles extends beyond them. Accounts list stoles, carpets, placemats, cotton yardage and cotton-silk sarees. The craft-centre account says makers have adapted to new materials and wider markets by developing additional products.

Gaatha, an older craft-archive account, says weaving one shawl takes around 10–12 days. That estimate may describe a particular product or production context; it is not a universal current timeframe.
Why is National Handloom Day observed on 7 August?
The Government of India designated 7 August as National Handloom Day in 2015. The Ministry of Tourism describes it as a day to honour the handloom weaving community and highlight the sector’s contribution to socioeconomic development. The Press Information Bureau also frames it as recognition of handloom heritage and refers to government schemes for weaver welfare and sector development.

A Ministry of Tourism event listing documents a 2023 Bhuj celebration organized by the Kutch Weavers Association at the LLDC Auditorium. That is a record of a specific past event, not confirmation of a recurring annual programme or current schedule.

What is at stake for the next generation?
In a 2024 report, 66-year-old master carpet weaver Virji Khetabhai Siju said, “The future of this work is bright, but in export.” He also described the importance of attracting younger generations as they weigh weaving against other career paths. Those remarks express one weaver’s perspective, not a measured finding about the whole community.

What should buyers look for in a handwoven Kutchi shawl?
Shawls are a well-established Bhujodi product, but a product label alone does not verify where a particular item was made. When considering a handwoven Kutchi shawl, check what the seller discloses about the maker and village, fibre and materials, weave and motif construction, and return terms. No particular merchant or online listing is verified here.
Gaatha reports that Kutchi shawls carry a GI tag, but that account does not establish the current registry entry, registration scope or authorized-user status. The claim should not be treated as proof that every item marketed as “Kutchi” is certified or that a specific listing is authentic.
