Navratri means “nine nights”: an autumn Hindu festival honoring the Goddess, especially Durga and her forms. In 2026, official tourism listings place its start on October 11, but give different end dates because some include the following tenth-day observance. Across India, the festival takes different forms—from Garba and Dandiya in Gujarat to Durga Puja in eastern India—so local dates and customs matter.

What is Navratri?

Navratri is a Hindu festival whose name combines nav (nine) and ratri (night). The autumn observance, often called Sharad Navratri, honors the Goddess, particularly Durga and the Navadurga, or nine forms of Durga. The Government of India’s Incredible India overview also recognizes a spring observance called Chaitra Navratri.

  • Multi Occasion Festival Use: navratri, ganesh chaturthi, bridal events, and housewarming rituals suit these hanging accents on door frames, mandir corners, windows, and walls indoors; This set supports hindu cultural spaces and diaspora homes
  • Plastic Material and Reuse: plastic artificial lotus flower strands stay lightweight and keep shape during repeated indoor hanging, with a non plant design that needs no watering or seasonal care; Sturdy build supports storage between festival seasons
  • Puja Room Decoration: puja backdrop decorations styling suits family shrines and prayer rooms, where lotus inspired accents reflect sacred symbolism within hindu worship settings; This coordinated set helps dress nearby spots around the mandir

The festival has a shared devotional center, but there is no single ritual schedule followed everywhere. Some households focus on prayer and fasting; some communities gather for dance, public Durga Puja, or displays of dolls. Even the boundary between the nine nights and the following tenth-day observance can be reflected differently in event listings.

When is Navratri in 2026?

Official tourism listings do not all use the same end date. Incredible India’s Navratri overview lists Sunday, October 11 through Monday, October 19, 2026. Its listing for the Vibrant Navratri Festival in Ahmedabad runs October 11–20, and Maharashtra Tourism also lists October 11–20. These ranges may differ because some include the associated tenth-day Vijayadashami or Dussehra observance; they should not be read as one universal event schedule.

Why is Navratri celebrated for nine nights?

The name itself refers to nine nights, and the autumn festival is dedicated to the Goddess and her forms. The Navadurga are commonly named as Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. The particular prayers, stories, and observances associated with the nights can vary among communities and households.

How do Navratri traditions vary by region?

The examples below describe prominent public traditions, not a complete map of practice. A person’s observance may differ from the regional shorthand.

Region or setting Public tradition often associated with Navratri
Gujarat Community Garba and Dandiya events; Gujarat Tourism describes Garba performed in a circle around a central devotional symbol.
Eastern India Durga Puja, known for major public and artistic celebrations.
Northern India Worship and Ramlila performances leading into Dussehra or Vijayadashami observances.
Parts of South India Kolu displays, with dolls or figures arranged on steps in some communities.

These customs are not mutually exclusive, and families within one region may observe the festival differently. The descriptions of regional celebrations come from Government of India tourism information and Maharashtra Tourism.

What is the difference between Garba and Dandiya?

Garba is a circular dance associated with Gujarat, often performed around a central devotional symbol. Dandiya is a dance in which participants use sticks. Both may be part of community Navratri celebrations, and some events feature both; neither describes how everyone observes the festival.

If you plan to join a Dandiya event, check the venue notice to find out whether sticks are supplied or whether you should bring your own. Clothing rules, tickets, and other entry requirements are also event-specific.

Do people fast during Navratri?

Fasting, puja, prayer, and aarti are among the practices described in official tourism information, and some people prepare special fasting foods. There is no single fasting plan that applies to everyone: choices depend on household, community, and regional practice. Follow your own religious and health needs rather than treating a particular menu or fast as universal.

What should you check before attending a Navratri event?

  • Confirm the event’s dates and times with its current local notice; listings may differ on whether they include the tenth-day observance.
  • Check whether the program is Garba, Dandiya, or both, and whether the organizer supplies Dandiya sticks.
  • Read the venue’s published clothing, ticket, and entry rules instead of assuming they are the same at every celebration.
  • If you are observing at home or at a place of worship, ask family or community organizers about the practices followed locally.
