Nebulis is Forestier’s contemporary lighting collection designed by Elise Fouin with textile innovator Sericyne. Its cloud-like pendants, wall lights and ceiling fixtures use naturally produced, nonwoven silk shaped over moulds instead of a conventional rigid shade. Elise Fouin’s portfolio dates Nébulis to 2021 and credits the project to Forestier x Sericyne. It identifies the collection as pendants, wall lights and ceiling lights made from natural nonwoven silk. The shades read as clustered, terraced mounds—more like suspended clouds or geological shelves than a single drum or cone.
That profile is not a decorative skin placed over a hidden hard shell. The silk itself supplies the visible three-dimensional structure. Light passes through the layered surface, so the fixture is both a source of illumination and a translucent object in the room when switched off.

The collection’s name is often written “Nébulis” in the designer’s portfolio and “Nebulis” in catalogue material. When ordering, use the spelling and reference number shown by the seller so the quotation matches the intended fixture.
Why silk is the defining material
Natural nonwoven silk, not a woven lampshade
Sericyne develops silk forms in which the thread is arranged as a continuous or mesh-like layer rather than woven into a conventional fabric. Fouin described the material as reminding her of Japanese washi paper while offering greater resistance at very low weight. That combination explains Nebulis’s visual character: the surface can remain delicate and luminous while holding a substantial moulded volume.
The silk is produced naturally by Bombyx mori silkworms. In the collection’s making process, the fibres are built up layer by layer and then shaped into the final shade. The surface therefore carries small variations in density and overlap that would not occur in an injection-moulded plastic diffuser.
How translucency changes the light
A translucent silk shell softens the lamp’s point source and reveals a gentle gradient across the mound. More layers or overlaps create areas of greater opacity; thinner areas transmit more glow. Because the shade is not a perfectly uniform cylinder, the light pattern depends on the individual form, its orientation and the distance from nearby walls and ceilings.
Fouin has said that “the material, the manufacturing techniques and the life cycle of the material is a great source of inspiration.” In practical terms, that means the construction is part of the visual language: seams, terraces and changes in thickness are intentional evidence of the process rather than defects to be hidden.

How nonwoven silk becomes a fixture
Two ways the material can form a mould
Sericyne’s research-led approach allows silkworms to spin thread directly over a mould, creating a translucent three-dimensional layer in place. A second approach produces a flat silk mesh that is then positioned over a form by hand. Both methods use the mould to establish the final volume, but they differ in how the fibre arrives at its surface.
The method described for Nebulis
The account of Nebulis published by ArchDaily describes the mesh process. Pieces of silk mesh were applied by hand to moulds in light layers, left to set and then lifted off. The article explains that the pieces were used for time efficiency rather than spinning every thread directly over the mould. Once released, the shaped silk became the shade used for the pendant, wall and ceiling versions.
This sequence also explains why the fixtures cannot be treated like mass-produced plastic diffusers. The shade depends on a mould, a controlled build-up of layers and manual placement. A replacement or additional unit may therefore show subtle differences in texture or translucency.
Forms and installation types
Pendant lights
Pendants suspend the silk mound below the ceiling, making the terraced profile visible from multiple angles. They suit a dining table, a stair void or another location where the lower and side surfaces can be seen. The available catalogue sizes are labelled XS, S and M, but the dimensions are broad height-by-width measurements rather than a promise of identical visual density between units.
Wall lights
A wall-mounted Nebulis presents the silk as a shallow luminous relief. It can act as a soft accent beside a bed, in a hallway or on a feature wall without projecting as far into the room as a pendant. Confirm whether the chosen wall model is designed for direct hardwiring or supplied with another connection arrangement; the cited catalogue excerpt does not establish a universal installation method.

Ceiling lights
Flush or close-to-ceiling versions use the same cloud-like language where a hanging fixture would obstruct circulation. They are useful in rooms with low ceilings, but the mounting plate, required junction-box position and clearance should be checked against the installer’s conditions before purchase.
Catalogue sizes and electrical data
A retailer-hosted excerpt of the Forestier Catalogue 2026 lists three Nebulis pendant references. It identifies the material as silk and states “Production and quote on demand.” The table reproduces those entries; it does not establish stock, a price or a delivery date.

Those ratings are the catalogue’s stated lamp limits, not a brightness measurement. E27 identifies the screw-base format; it does not by itself confirm the voltage, dimmer compatibility, colour temperature, cable length or canopy finish for every country. Ask the current Forestier representative or local design-lighting seller for the specification sheet that applies to your installation.
How to choose a Nebulis size
Start with the room and viewing distance
Measure the clear space around the intended mounting point before choosing a model. The M pendant’s listed 82 × 60 cm envelope needs substantially more visual and physical room than the XS’s 40 × 28 cm profile. Over a table, keep the lowest point high enough to preserve sightlines; in a circulation route, allow the clearance required by local electrical and building practice.

The XS and S entries each allow one 15 W lamp, while the M allows two 15 W lamps. The number is a maximum or stated configuration, not a guarantee that the room will receive a particular lux level. Select an LED lamp that stays within the fixture’s rating and check the lamp maker’s guidance for enclosed or partially enclosed shades. If you need dimming, verify that both the lamp and the dimmer are compatible.

Use the silhouette deliberately
Choose XS where the fixture is part of a group or where a small pool of light is sufficient. S provides a more visible single object over a compact table or in a bedroom. M has the strongest architectural presence and, with two lamp positions, can distribute light across a larger area. These are design-use suggestions, not photometric guarantees; the final effect depends on ceiling height, wall reflectance and lamp choice.

Environmental claims: what is established and what is not
The collection is presented as an attempt to use natural materials in place of synthetics, and its silk is naturally produced. Those facts describe the material and process; they do not quantify the full environmental result.
No lifecycle assessment, carbon-footprint figure, energy-use comparison or independently measured environmental advantage is reported in the cited material. ArchDaily’s sponsored article says the lamp “doesn’t challenge the carbon balance,” but supplies no method or data. That sentence should be read as promotional framing, not as a verified performance result.
