Nerd Fonts adds icon and symbol glyphs to developer-oriented fonts so compatible terminals and applications can display them. Choose a base font you like, select a width variant appropriate for your application, install a pre-patched release or patch your own font, and then select that font in the application.

Installing a Nerd Font does not make applications show icons automatically: the application, prompt, theme, or plugin must output the relevant characters. Nerd Fonts is a project offering downloadable font files and patching software, not a special keyboard or paid product.

What are Nerd Fonts?

Nerd Fonts patches developer-targeted fonts with glyphs from icon collections. The Nerd Fonts project README lists 67 patched font families and more than 10,000 combined glyphs and icons; these are project figures that may change, not independently audited totals. The README lists sets including Powerline with Extra Symbols, Font Awesome, Material Design Icons, Weather, Devicons, Octicons, Font Logos, Pomicons, and Codeicons. Check the current project materials for the latest family and glyph-set list.

The added symbols can appear when a compatible application emits their characters and a Nerd Font is selected. Common uses include terminal prompts, file listings, editor status lines, Vim or Neovim plugins, and terminal status bars.

Which Nerd Font should I use for my terminal?

Start with a readable base family and then choose a variant for how the added Nerd Font glyphs should occupy space. There is no single best family for everyone: readability, needed glyphs, width behavior, and availability for your operating system all matter.

Variant Consider it for What to know
Nerd Font General use Check how glyphs fit and align in the application you use.
Nerd Font Mono Terminals, prompts, and aligned text The added glyphs are treated as monospaced; this is a useful starting point for text-cell layouts.
Nerd Font Propo Layouts where proportional glyph widths are acceptable Proportional widths can be unsuitable for carefully aligned terminal output.

The variant designation concerns Nerd Font glyphs; it does not necessarily describe the entire base font. Pick a base family for its appearance and readability, and check the exact family name and variants available in the current release.

How do I install a Nerd Font?

For most users, a release archive is a straightforward way to obtain a family and its font variations. Other documented routes include Homebrew Cask for macOS and Linux, an install script for Linux and macOS automation, and platform-specific options such as Windows and Arch Linux. Routes differ by operating system; check the project’s current instructions before choosing one.

  1. Choose a base family and variant. Consider what you find readable and whether your application needs stable cell alignment.
  2. Open the official release page. Check its current release and available family archives rather than relying on an old direct file path.
  3. Download the family archive or use a documented platform-appropriate route. A family archive can include variations such as bold or italic.
  4. Install the TTF or OTF files. Use your operating system’s normal font installation process; on many systems, opening a font file starts the installer.
  5. Restart the target application and select the patched font. Choose the Nerd Font family in the terminal, editor, or other application where you need the symbols.
  6. Test the symbols you rely on. Check prompts, separators, file icons, or status-line symbols in the actual application.

Do not clone the complete repository as the default way to get a font. The project README warns that the repository is large and that a clone does not contain all patched fonts; use a release asset for ordinary installation.

Which installation routes are available?

Route Use it when Platform note
Release archive You want a family package and its variations Install the downloaded TTF or OTF files through your operating system.
Homebrew Cask It suits your package-management workflow The README documents it for macOS and Linux.
Install script You need Linux or macOS installation automation The script documentation lists options to install or update from GitHub releases, list fonts, install selected or all fonts, and remove Nerd Fonts.
Other documented package or installer paths You prefer a platform-specific route Options include Windows and Arch Linux; not every route supports every operating system.

The install script documentation lists curl, mktemp, sed, tar, and wc among its required command-line tools. Confirm the current README and script documentation for supported options and requirements, since these can change.

What is the difference between Nerd Font and Nerd Font Mono?

The names distinguish width treatment for Nerd Font glyphs, not necessarily every character in the original typeface. A Mono variant is a sensible starting point when prompts, file listings, or other terminal output depend on stable character-cell alignment. For proportional layouts, another variant may suit the application better. Test the result in your actual setup.

How do I patch my own font with Nerd Fonts?

Use the Font Patcher when your preferred base font is not available as a pre-patched family or when you want to customize which glyphs and width treatment to include. The project documents a FontForge Python script and a Docker option. The project says to obtain the patcher script together with its helper files; downloading only font-patcher is not sufficient.

Requirements and basic command

The README lists FontForge, Python 3, python-fontforge, and argparse as requirements. Its documented local command is:

The patcher options include choices about glyph sets and width treatment, such as monospaced or double-width glyphs. This lets you work from your chosen font and configure the output instead of installing a full pre-patched family. The Docker route is an alternative if you prefer not to set up the dependencies directly on your host.

Why are icons missing or misaligned?

First confirm that the application is using the patched font and that the prompt, theme, or plugin emits the relevant characters. If letters render but icons do not, check whether the selected font includes the needed glyphs and whether your integration is compatible with the font version. If output is misaligned, test the Mono variant and review the application’s width and fallback behavior.

  1. Verify the exact patched family is selected in the application.
  2. Restart the application after installation or font changes.
  3. Confirm the integration outputs the expected Nerd Fonts characters.
  4. Test a Mono variant if terminal alignment is important.
  5. Check current project and integration documentation if you have upgraded versions or changed glyph sets.

Which route should I choose?

Your need Starting point Reason
You want a quick setup with a supported family Release archive It provides a pre-patched family and its variations.
You want package-managed installation A documented platform-appropriate package route It can fit an existing workflow, but routes vary by operating system.
Your preferred font is not available pre-patched Font Patcher It lets you work from your chosen base font and configure glyphs and width treatment.
You need automated Linux or macOS installation Install script Its documentation describes install, update, list, and removal operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does installing Nerd Fonts make icons appear in every application?

No. The application, prompt, theme, or plugin must output the relevant characters, and the application must use a Nerd Font that provides the glyphs.

Which Nerd Font should I use for a terminal?

Choose a readable base family and try its Nerd Font Mono variant when aligned terminal output matters. There is no universally best base family.

How do I install a Nerd Font?

Download a family release archive or use a documented route that supports your operating system. Install its TTF or OTF files through the normal system process, then select the patched family in your application.

Can I patch a font that is not included?

The project provides a Font Patcher for working with a chosen font. Obtain the script and helper files together and install the listed dependencies, or use the documented Docker option.

What is the latest Nerd Fonts release?

The official GitHub releases page listed v3.5.1, released on 21 August 2026, as the latest release at the research check. Release versions and assets can change, so consult the live releases page before downloading.
