Archaeologists and conservators recovered historic-art fragments from the debris cleared after the 15 April 2019 fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral. A 2024 report put the number at about 1,035, citing ARTnews; France’s Ministry of Culture separately confirms the discovery of painted, carved fragments from the cathedral’s 13th-century choir screen, or jubé. The exact figure is not given in the cited ministry accounts, so 1,035 should be treated as a reported estimate, not an independently confirmed final inventory.
What are the roughly 1,035 fragments?
They are reported fragments of historic artwork recovered during the post-fire clearance and archaeological work at Notre-Dame. The number does not mean that archaeologists found 1,035 complete artworks, nor does the available official account establish that every item in the count came from the same object or period. Archaeology Magazine reported the figure in 2024, citing ARTnews; the Ministry of Culture confirms particular discoveries but does not give that total in the cited accounts.
The best-documented group includes polychrome, carved stone from the 13th-century jubé. The Ministry describes fragments of faces, hands, bodies and drapery, along with architectural and vegetal ornament. These are surviving pieces of sculpture and decoration, not simply scraps of painted wall.

A jubé was a choir screen that separated the choir from the rest of a church. Notre-Dame’s 13th-century screen was dismantled in the early 18th century. Its fragments later became part of the cathedral’s archaeological record; the fire and the work that followed made recovery and study of some of them possible.

Because the fragments are incomplete, each carved feature can help art historians identify how the screen was decorated and how its figures were composed. A hand, face or fold of drapery may preserve information that is difficult to recover from written descriptions alone. The paint traces are especially significant: INRAP noted in 2024 that very little of Notre-Dame’s original painting remained before these discoveries. The fragments therefore offer rare material evidence of the color and finish of a medieval Gothic interior.
How did archaeologists recover artwork from the fire debris?
The 15 April 2019 fire caused structural collapse and led to extensive clearance and restoration work. Instead of treating everything removed from the cathedral as ordinary waste, teams documented, sorted and stored archaeological material as it was recovered. The official Notre-Dame site says more than 40,000 photographs documented bucket lifts during removal, helping preserve contextual information about recovered items.

- Document removal. Photographs recorded the lifting of debris, preserving information about the recovery process.
- Sort and identify materials. Archaeologists and conservators examined the remains for objects and building elements worth preserving and studying.
- Store material for research. Recovered objects were moved from temporary storage on the cathedral forecourt to dedicated facilities, where researchers could access them.
The scale of this effort extended well beyond artwork. A 2022 inventory from the Ministry of Culture and DRAC Île-de-France lists more than 10,000 pieces of wood, nearly 650 palettes of stone and 350 palettes of metal. These are counts of recovered building materials, not additional artwork fragments.
What other discoveries came from the archaeological work?
The fragments belong to a much wider archaeological picture. The Ministry’s 2024 overview reports more than twenty archaeological operations, the discovery of the medieval jubé and about one hundred burials. It also describes a lead anthropomorphic sarcophagus. These finds represent different kinds of evidence and should not be conflated with the reported count of historic-art fragments.

The Ministry reports that around thirty fragments of the jubé were displayed at the Musée de Cluny through 16 March 2025. That date has passed; it does not establish where those pieces are currently displayed or stored.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the fragments matter to painting and conservation
For painting history, the fragments challenge the modern impression of a medieval cathedral as bare stone. Pigment traces on carved surfaces show that sculpture and architecture were once part of a more colorful visual environment. Because the surviving paint is partial, it cannot by itself establish the complete color scheme of the screen or the cathedral.

The fragments also raise conservation questions. Paint traces and possible contamination from lead require controlled handling and specialist assessment; cleaning or sampling without that care could damage evidence. In combination with recovered stonework, the fragments can also help researchers examine how medieval materials were cut, assembled and decorated. Their value lies not only in their appearance, but in the physical evidence they preserve about making, use, loss and recovery.
