“Nude body pictures” can refer to very different things. For an art-focused reader, a useful distinction is between historical nude artworks, fine-art nude photography, and figure studies made to practise drawing. Museum collection records make it possible to explore those traditions while checking each work’s date, medium, context, and image-use terms.
What “nude body pictures” means in an art context
The nude is a longstanding subject in art, not a single medium or kind of image. It appears in drawings, paintings, sculpture, and photography, with works made for different purposes: finished artworks, studies of the human figure, or exercises in observing a model.

Three ways to explore nude imagery
Historical artworks and figure studies
A figure study can reveal how an artist observed the body, tested poses, or worked with materials. Pompeo Batoni’s Nude Figure Study, dated 1765–1768, is a chalk drawing on green paper. The Prado describes it as drawn from a life model and places this kind of practice in the setting of Roman academies, private or official, as well as independently organized classes. The Met’s Pierre Paul Prud’hon drawing, Seated Female Nude (recto); Standing Male Nude (verso), is dated probably to 1810–20 and made with black and white chalk on blue paper. Its front and reverse offer two figure studies within one object. View the Met collection record.
Fine-art nude photography
Photography became another medium for the nude soon after photography was announced in 1839. The Getty describes the nude as a traditional art form and its collection as containing substantial photographic nude figure studies. Its exhibition overview, In Focus: The Nude, offers a starting point for considering how photographers have treated the subject as art.

Drawing practice
For art study, distinguish a completed artwork from a study made by observing a live model. A drawing reference book may be useful if you want structured figure-drawing exercises, but it is an adjacent option rather than a substitute for studying original works. Choose resources according to whether you need anatomy instruction, pose references, or art-historical examples.
How to compare museum examples
Collection records are most useful when read as more than image pages. Compare works by institution, date, medium, and the context the museum supplies. For drawing practice, also ask whether the work is a study from life or a finished composition; the distinction affects what you can learn from it.
| Work or resource | Date | Medium or focus | Useful context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pompeo Batoni, Nude Figure Study — Prado | 1765–1768 | Chalk on green paper | Described as drawn from a life model; connected with academy and independent-class practice. |
| Pierre Paul Prud’hon, Seated Female Nude (recto); Standing Male Nude (verso) — The Met | Probably 1810–20 | Black and white chalk on blue paper | A double-sided drawing; the record labels the work public domain and explains the museum’s Open Access terms. |
| Getty, In Focus: The Nude | Exhibition held October 9, 2007–February 24, 2008 | Art-historical overview, including nude photography | Places photography’s emergence in relation to the medium’s 1839 announcement and discusses photographic figure studies in the Getty collection. |
Check image rights before reusing a picture
Viewing an image on a museum site does not by itself establish that you may reproduce it. Check the rights statement on the individual work record and follow the institution’s terms for the intended use.
The Met’s Prud’hon record labels that work public domain and explains that images and data covered by its Open Access policy may be used commercially or noncommercially without permission or fee. Apply that statement only to material covered by the Met’s terms; it is not a blanket rule for every work on the Met site or for other institutions.
Rank #4
The Prado’s record presents personal-use and commercial-use choices for its image. Follow the option and terms shown for that specific work. The rights status of images elsewhere in the Prado or Getty collections should not be inferred from these examples.
