Interior designer Olivia Emery helped transform a run-down Victorian townhouse in west London into a vibrant, practical family home, using saturated paint, expressive wallpaper and layered furnishings across four stories. The most striking choices—ruby-red kitchen cabinetry, a deep-blue entertaining snug and wallpaper on the ceiling—were shaped around how the family wanted to live, not color for color’s sake.
The homeowners, friends of Oxfordshire-based Emery, lived in the property for several years before deciding how to renovate it. They then appointed Emery, architect Nathan Beevers and builders TFI Concepts, and obtained planning permission. The renovation removed interior walls and reworked a basement Emery described as “a rabbit warren.” A contemporary glass-box extension at the side contains the basement staircase, while the basement kitchen was extended into the garden. The resulting four-story home pairs a light-filled basement with cozier attic rooms. Homes & Gardens’ feature on the project was published on October 7, 2026, with photography by Boz Gagovski.
How color and pattern serve the home
The clients wanted a contemporary, comfortable family home and were willing to take risks with color and pattern. Emery said, “They were great fun to work with as they were not afraid of color and pattern.” Their openness shows up differently from room to room: bold, storage-focused cabinetry anchors the kitchen; wallpaper turns the sitting room into an immersive setting; and the snug uses a darker palette for evening relaxation and entertaining.

The kitchen: ruby cabinetry with a practical purpose
The open-plan kitchen, dining and seating area is the home’s social heart. The clients prioritized storage, so Emery designed bespoke Shaker-style cabinetry in Farrow & Ball Preference Red. The dramatic color was a deliberate choice. “The clients wanted to be really brave with color. We looked at lots of pictures of red kitchens, and they said ‘Let’s just do it. We can paint over it if we hate it’,” Emery said.
Patagonia Green quartzite, used for the worktops and splashback, provided the starting point for the scheme. The island has an antique-brass paint finish, and mid-century-inspired dining chairs were re-covered in vibrant fabric. Together, the red, green stone, metallic finish and upholstery create the kitchen’s jewelry-box effect without losing sight of its storage needs.

The sitting room: an enveloping wallpapered landscape
Andrew Martin Lantern Parade wallpaper covers the sitting-room walls, giving the room an immersive landscape motif. Emery balanced its visual impact with a tan velvet sofa, bouclé armchairs, vintage furniture, a geometric rug and orange lamps. The result layers pattern and texture rather than relying on one statement piece alone.
The snug: deep blue and a patterned ceiling
In contrast to the more formal sitting room, the snug is designed to shift between evening relaxation and entertaining. Deep-blue cabinetry, painted in Benjamin Moore Gentleman’s Gray, incorporates both a bar and bookcase. Tres Tintas Abstract Mex wallpaper in Blue brings pattern overhead. “I love putting wallpapers on ceilings. I just think it’s so interesting,” Emery said.

What the project shows about decorating with confidence
Emery’s approach is not simply to repeat a bold color everywhere. The design gives each room its own character while connecting the house through confident paint choices, wallpaper, tactile materials and vintage elements. A strong color works best when it has a role: the red kitchen cabinets deliver the storage the clients wanted, the snug’s blue cabinetry combines books and a bar, and wallpaper shifts between walls and ceiling according to the room.
Emery also noted an advantage of designing for friends: “You have the advantage of knowing how they like to live and their style,” she said. That familiarity helped the scheme balance experimentation with the practical requirements of a family home. The feature does not state a project budget, room dimensions or renovation duration, so the design is best understood through its reported choices rather than assumed costs or performance.
