One of humanity’s earliest drawings included an enormous phallus

The Lapa do Santo “little horny man” is a 9,000–12,000-year-old Brazilian petroglyph with an oversized phallus. Researchers call it the oldest reliably dated figurative petroglyph in the New World, not the oldest drawing in human history.

A small carved figure at Brazil’s Lapa do Santo rock shelter is one of the earliest securely dated human images in the Americas. Researchers call it the oldest reliably dated figurative petroglyph known in the New World—not the oldest drawing ever made by humans.

What the “little horny man” is

The image is a pecked, anthropomorphic figure carved directly into bedrock at the Lapa do Santo rock shelter in Brazil. Excavators led by University of São Paulo archaeologist Walter Neves exposed it in 2009, about 4 metres below the surface of the archaeological deposit.

The figure has a thin, linear body, three-fingered hands or feet, a C-shaped head and a markedly oversized phallus. Its nickname, “little horny man,” describes the anatomy; it is not the name of an ancient person or a confirmed cultural label.

How old is the carving?

Feature Reported information
Site Lapa do Santo rock shelter, Brazil
Medium Petroglyph pecked into bedrock
Size Approximately 30 cm from head to feet and 20 cm across
Archaeological position Exposed at an approximate depth of 4.0 metres
Reported age 9,000–12,000 years old, based on the radiocarbon-dated context reported for the rock art
Research significance Described by its researchers as the oldest reliably dated figurative petroglyph found in the New World

The 9,000–12,000-year range is the published dating range, not a newly recalculated age. It applies to this archaeological context and should not be expanded into a claim about every early image or every prehistoric carving.

Is it really humanity’s earliest drawing?

No—not without qualification. “Earliest drawing” can combine different media, regions and dating standards. Lapa do Santo is a carved image in the Americas. The researchers’ narrower claim is that it is the oldest reliably dated figurative petroglyph known in the New World, meaning the Western Hemisphere.

A pecked petroglyph is also not the same category as a pigment drawing. For example, a University of the Witwatersrand release separately describes an ochre-pencil image from Blombos Cave as an early drawing. Comparing such finds requires keeping the medium, geography, dating method and archaeological context explicit rather than treating every mark as one universal record.

Why the American context matters

Upper Paleolithic art dating roughly from 40,000 to 10,000 years ago is comparatively rare in the Americas. That scarcity helps explain the attention given to a securely contextualized figurative image at Lapa do Santo, even though older figurative art exists elsewhere.

Was the phallus a fertility symbol?

Walter Neves suggested that the carving may have played a role in fertility rituals. That is an interpretation, not an established function. The surviving evidence does not identify the maker, demonstrate a ritual setting or reveal what the figure was intended to mean.

Prehistoric images with exaggerated sexual anatomy occur in several regions, including European examples more than 30,000 years old. The comparison shows that sexual imagery is a recurring theme in human art; it does not prove that distant communities shared one fertility symbolism or used such figures in the same way.

What the find can—and cannot—tell us

What is established

  • The image is carved rather than painted.
  • It is an anthropomorphic figure with an oversized phallus.
  • It comes from Lapa do Santo in Brazil and was found during excavations in 2009.
  • Its reported age is 9,000–12,000 years.
  • Researchers identify it as the oldest reliably dated figurative petroglyph known in the New World.

What remains unknown

  • The individual or community that made it.
  • The figure’s original name, story or social role.
  • Whether it was used in a fertility ceremony, another ritual, teaching, humor, identity display or an ordinary act of marking the shelter.
  • Whether the exaggerated anatomy carried the same meaning as later or geographically distant phallic images.

How to describe it accurately

The most precise short description is: a 9,000–12,000-year-old anthropomorphic petroglyph from Lapa do Santo, Brazil, notable for its oversized phallus and identified by its researchers as the oldest reliably dated figurative petroglyph in the New World. Calling it “humanity’s first drawing” removes the distinctions that make the archaeological claim meaningful.
