OpenAI’s new flagship image model is GPT Image 2, launched on April 21, 2026. In ChatGPT, the user-facing experience is called ChatGPT Images 2.0; developers access the model through the OpenAI API. It brings stronger instruction following, image editing, dense-text handling, and a paid-plan “images with thinking” mode—but it is not a guarantee of perfect typography, factual accuracy, or production-ready consistency.
What launched?
GPT Image 2 is OpenAI’s current flagship image-generation and editing model. OpenAI describes it as a state-of-the-art system for creating and modifying images from text and image inputs. It supports still images, not audio or video.
The names refer to different parts of the product:

What is new compared with earlier OpenAI image tools?
OpenAI says GPT Image 2 improves several areas:
- Following detailed instructions and preserving relationships between objects.
- Editing an existing image while changing only the requested elements.
- Interpreting higher-fidelity image inputs.
- Rendering dense text and complex layouts more effectively.
- Handling visual detail and real-world concepts with stronger world knowledge.
- Planning and refining difficult requests through “images with thinking.”
These are capability claims from OpenAI, not proof that the model is universally better than every competitor or succeeds on every prompt. Text can still be misspelled, complex scenes can contain spatial or anatomical errors, and an edit can unintentionally change details that were meant to remain untouched.
How to create and edit images in ChatGPT
ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available on the web, iOS, and Android. The basic workflow is:
- Open ChatGPT and start a conversation, or choose More → Images.
- Describe the image, including its subject, style, composition, dimensions, background, and any exact wording.
- Submit the request and wait for generation.
- Select the result to open the editor.
- Request changes in natural language, then save or download the finished image.
You can also upload an existing image and describe the changes you want. OpenAI says generation can take several minutes depending on the request, although you can continue using ChatGPT while it works. See the official Images in ChatGPT guide for the current interface.
Prompts that make the editing goal clear
- “Remove the person in the background while preserving the subject’s face, clothing, lighting, and camera angle.”
- “Create a product-card image with the exact headline ‘SUMMER SALE’ and leave a clean 30% margin around the text.”
- “Turn this rough wireframe into a polished mobile-app landing-page mockup.”
- “Keep the person’s facial likeness and change only the background to a dimly lit jazz club.”
For critical text, logos, packaging, or diagrams, treat the generated image as a starting point and proofread it before publication.

What does “images with thinking” do?
“Images with thinking” is a paid-plan feature that gives ChatGPT more time to plan and refine an image before generating it. OpenAI says it can use reasoning and tools, including live web-search information and the ability to generate multiple images from one prompt.

This mode is available on Plus, Pro, and Business, with Enterprise and Edu availability described as forthcoming. It is not automatically applied to every image, and more planning does not guarantee correct facts, perfect typography, or a successful result on every request. The practical trade-off may be a longer wait for a more deliberate attempt.
Who can access GPT Image 2?
According to OpenAI’s current help documentation, ChatGPT Images 2.0 is available across all ChatGPT tiers on web, iOS, and Android. Access does not mean identical quotas: usage caps, queueing, and rate limits can vary by plan and may change.
API access is separate. Developers need an OpenAI API account and a supported usage tier. GPT Image 2 is listed as unsupported on the free API tier. Image generation and editing are also available in Codex, according to OpenAI’s help documentation.

Using GPT Image 2 through the API
The API exposes GPT Image 2 through:

)Check the current GPT Image 2 model page and image-generation guide before deploying code, because SDK syntax and response handling can change.
The model supports text and image inputs for image workflows. It does not support audio or video, streaming, function calling, structured outputs, or fine-tuning. Developers must also handle billing, moderation, retries, storage, and rate limits themselves.

What does it cost?
ChatGPT access is governed by the limits of the user’s ChatGPT plan. API usage is billed separately according to image and text-token usage. OpenAI directs developers to its live pricing information and image-generation calculator rather than providing a fixed universal subscription price for the model.
Do not reuse prices from GPT Image 1 or the previous chatgpt-image-latest model. Check the current GPT Image 2 documentation and OpenAI API platform before budgeting a production workflow.

How should you evaluate image quality?
“Best image generator” is not a useful conclusion without a defined test. A practical evaluation should use representative prompts and compare:
- Typography: spelling, punctuation, font-like consistency, and readability.
- Editing: whether only the requested object changes.
- Identity and preservation: faces, clothing, logos, product geometry, and lighting.
- Scene structure: object counts, perspective, shadows, reflections, and spatial relationships.
- Consistency: whether a character, product, or brand style remains stable across several images.
- Factual depictions: whether real places, people, historical events, or products are represented accurately.
- Workflow performance: time to the first result, time for edits, and whether provenance information survives export.
OpenAI’s examples and system card show intended capabilities and company-reported evaluations. They should not be presented as independent benchmark results.
Important limitations
- Improved text rendering does not mean every language, typeface, or dense layout will be correct.
- Complex scenes may still contain wrong object counts, perspective errors, anatomy problems, or implausible reflections.
- Image editing can introduce unintended changes outside the requested area.
- A realistic image can depict invented people, products, places, or events with an appearance of authority.
- Thinking can improve planning, but it is not a guarantee of factual accuracy.
- ChatGPT generations may take minutes for complex requests.
- GPT Image 2 is an image model, not a video-generation system.
- API rate limits depend on the account’s usage tier.
For regulated, scientific, historical, medical, or commercial work, independently verify every important visual claim.

- Text screening before a request reaches the image model.
- Screening of uploaded input images.
- Output screening before an image is shown.
- Additional monitoring and account-level enforcement for suspected misuse.
OpenAI highlights risks involving convincing deepfakes of real people, political content, sexual content, and sensitive events. Filtering is not the same as universal safety, accuracy, or legality. Users remain responsible for consent, rights, impersonation, deceptive use, and commercial claims.

OpenAI says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex, and its API include C2PA metadata, an open provenance standard, and an invisible SynthID watermarking signal.
These signals have important limits:
- Screenshots and other processing can remove metadata.
- A missing signal does not prove an image was not generated by OpenAI.
- Provenance indicates origin signals, not factual accuracy, legal ownership, or the complete editing history.
OpenAI provides information about C2PA and provenance through its help documentation and content-provenance announcement.
Is GPT Image 2 replacing DALL·E?
Not exactly. GPT Image 2 is the current flagship image-generation system integrated into ChatGPT and available through the API. OpenAI’s help documentation still says users can access DALL·E through the DALL·E GPT.

The practical distinction is simple: use GPT Image 2 for the current integrated workflow, while DALL·E remains a separate legacy or alternative GPT experience where available. Do not describe DALL·E as fully removed without a formal OpenAI deprecation announcement.
Who should use it?
ChatGPT Images 2.0 is a good fit when you:
- Want conversational creation and revision.
- Prefer natural-language editing over manual controls.
- Need to upload a reference image and describe changes.
- Want brainstorming, writing, and image creation in one workspace.
- Create occasional images rather than operating a specialized production pipeline.
The API is a better fit when you:
- Are integrating generation into an application, CMS, design tool, or automation.
- Need programmatic generation and editing.
- Need a dated model snapshot for reproducibility.
- Can manage API billing, moderation, retries, rate limits, and storage.
It may be a poor fit when you need:
- Layered Photoshop files, exact vector output, or pixel-level deterministic control.
- Guaranteed brand consistency across a large catalog without additional tooling.
- High-volume production where cost and rate limits are restrictive.
- Video generation.
- Professional typography without a separate design pass.
- Unverified visuals for high-stakes communication.
How it compares with alternatives
There is no universal winner; the better choice depends on the workflow.

The bottom line
GPT Image 2 is a substantial update to OpenAI’s image-generation offering, but its most important change is integration: ChatGPT Images 2.0 combines generation, reference-image editing, and conversational refinement in a general-purpose assistant. Developers can use the same model through the API, with a dated snapshot available for more stable workflows.
