Orbital2 is a wired shortcut controller for creative software, not a gaming joystick. Its joystick-like control, pushable dial and surrounding buttons let you trigger commands and adjust parameters without reaching for as many keyboard shortcuts. It is most useful to artists and other creators who repeat a small set of actions often and are willing to configure and learn application-specific profiles. The hardware dates to 2018, but BRAIN MAGIC was still updating its software in July 2026.
What Orbital2 does
Made by Tokyo-based BRAIN MAGIC Co., Ltd., Orbital2 is designed to supplement a keyboard, mouse or pen tablet. Its central control supports three basic actions: tilt, rotate and press. You can assign those actions, along with the surrounding buttons, to software shortcuts, parameter changes and other supported commands. The company introduced the device through a 2018 Kickstarter campaign; it announced U.S. Amazon availability beginning March 3, 2022. That launch history does not establish current stock or price. #1 Best Overall
- Rotary Knob for Precise Volume Control – Turn clockwise to increase volume, counterclockwise to decrease. Unlike keyboard buttons or software sliders, this analog-style knob gives you smooth, step-less control over your PC, laptop, or Android device audio.
- Instant Mute with a Gentle Press – Lightly press the knob to instantly mute your computer or Android device audio. Press again to restore the previous volume level. Perfect for sudden phone calls, meetings, or quiet moments.
- USB-C with Included Cable – No Driver Needed – Works with Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android phones/tablets. Simply plug it into any USB-C port (cable included). No software or driver installation required – works immediately.
- Built-in Magnetic Bottom + Non-Slip Ring – The strong magnetic base securely attaches to any metal surface: PC case, monitor stand, desk leg, or fridge. Measuring just 3.5cm × 4cm, the non-slip rubber ring also keeps it steady when placed freely on your desk.
- Ideal for Streamers, Gamers, and Mobile Users – Great for PC gaming, music production, remote work, and even controlling volume on USB-C Android tablets/phones. The magnetic base keeps it within easy reach without taking up desk space.
The device’s appeal is concentrated: it places frequent commands under a dedicated hand position. It does not replace a keyboard for text-heavy work, a mouse or trackpad for general navigation, or a pen tablet for drawing. Its value depends on whether shortcut access and dial-based adjustments suit the way you work.
How the controls work
Orbital Engine
The central mechanism, which BRAIN MAGIC calls the Orbital Engine, combines a joystick-like tilt control with a rotating dial and a press action. Depending on the configuration, these actions can select commands or alter a value. The dial is a natural fit for continuous adjustments such as zoom, brush size or timeline movement when the application and assigned command support them. BRAIN MAGIC’s Orbital2 control guide
Flat Ring and on-screen guidance
The surrounding Flat Ring contains switches for additional commands and menu interactions. Orbital2 Core can show an on-screen menu or indicator guide to help identify assignments. That guidance matters: layered controls can reduce hand travel, but they also require you to learn which profile, direction and action activates a command.

Glow Ring
The RGB Glow Ring can indicate the active profile with a chosen color. Treat it as a status cue, not a performance feature; it can help distinguish application configurations once you have learned what each color means.

What you can assign—and what varies
BRAIN MAGIC says Orbital2 can be used with software that allows keyboard shortcuts to be assigned. The practical scope varies: a basic keystroke is different from a multi-step macro, an application-specific integration or direct control of a parameter. A command may also depend on which panel has focus or on the application’s own shortcut settings. BRAIN MAGIC’s compatibility FAQ
- Shortcuts: Assign single keys or combinations where the target application recognizes them.
- Profiles: Create configurations for different applications or tasks, and select them manually or use automatic switching.
- Macros and text: The original product’s launch material described macros, text blocks and mouse functions. Treat these as documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every action behaves identically across current applications and software versions. 2018 launch announcement
- Application profiles: BRAIN MAGIC has offered recommended profiles for particular creative applications. A supplied profile is a starting point, not proof that every command suits your version or setup.
The 2018 announcement promoted “over 200” commands and claimed task completion could be up to 50% faster. Those are historical promotional claims, not independently established results for every user. A large command count also says little about how many assignments will be memorable or useful in your own workflow. 2018 launch announcement

macOS
The latest Mac download page found lists macOS Big Sur 11.1, Monterey 12, Ventura 13, Sonoma 14 and Sequoia 15. It says Catalina 10.15 is no longer supported; the July 2026 Windows release notes separately identify Big Sur 11.0 as dropped. Check the exact macOS version against the portal before installing rather than relying on older product-page lists. Older documentation also says some Intel-era macOS setups require Orbital2 Core to run through Rosetta 2, so do not assume universal native Apple Silicon support. Windows 8.1 is not a current target: BRAIN MAGIC said support would end after Microsoft ended support for that operating system on January 10, 2023. BRAIN MAGIC support announcement
Set up a first useful profile
- Check compatibility: Confirm your operating system’s exact version and the computer requirements against the current Orbital2 Portal.
- Connect the device: Use the supplied or a compatible data-capable USB-A-to-Micro-B cable. If using USB-C, use a compatible cable or adapter.
- Install the current software: Download Orbital2 Core for your operating system. On Windows, install the application and its required driver; do not install the STERNA driver for the original Orbital2.
- Open Orbital2 Core and check detection: Confirm the software recognizes the controller before configuring commands.
- Choose or create a profile: Start with one application and a short list of actions you use repeatedly. Label the profile clearly and, if useful, set a distinct Glow Ring color.
- Assign and test commands: Add shortcuts to the controls that make sense for your hand, then test each one in a non-destructive document before relying on it in active work.
- Save and refine: Keep the first configuration small. Add commands after the initial assignments feel predictable rather than filling every control immediately.
Not every installation is plug-and-play. Drivers, permissions, an old USB driver, application focus or a shortcut conflict can prevent a command from working as expected.

Profiles are central to Orbital2 because the same physical control can perform different jobs in different applications. BRAIN MAGIC documents automatic profile switching, but notes that heavy system load can delay a switch and that switching does not operate while the Orbital2 settings window is open. If several profiles are associated with the same application, the profile configured first may be applied. Avoid duplicate associations or select the intended profile explicitly. - 【Metal Shell】The case is made of metal with a superior texture and a silky feel. Comes with a blue LED indicator.
- 【Compatibility】Not Compatible with Batocera OS, Chrome OS. Supports Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux.
Orbital2 Core also has a program-macro workflow, and BRAIN MAGIC offers Orbital2 Logger to record key sequences. The Windows portal says Logger requires Orbital2 Core 1.7.0 or later, is available in Japanese and English, and produces files that should not be shared casually because of security concerns. It also says Logger files cannot be reflected in Orbital2 STERNA’s program-macro function. Review logged content for sensitive text or commands before transferring a file, and do not treat the original Orbital2 and STERNA macro workflows as interchangeable. Where it may fit in a creative workflow
- Illustration: Put a small set of frequent shortcuts or brush-related adjustments on the controller. It complements a pen tablet; it does not draw in place of one.
- Photo editing: A dial may suit repeated value changes, while profile-specific shortcuts can be useful across editing applications. Confirm the current application behavior and profile before building a complex macro.
- Video editing: Frequently used commands or timeline-related controls may benefit from dedicated assignments, provided the application exposes suitable shortcuts.
- 3D, CAD and animation: A shortcut-heavy workflow may offer candidate commands for mapping, but navigation and tool behavior differ by application, so test assignments in context.
- Sound and general productivity: It can trigger shortcuts where applications support them, but typing, file management and frequent context changes are less naturally served by a compact shortcut controller.
The defensible benefit is convenience: repeated commands and some parameter adjustments can be placed at hand. Whether that saves time or feels comfortable depends on the person, setup and application. BRAIN MAGIC’s promotional speed claim is not a substitute for a controlled comparison or evidence of a medical benefit; the available documentation does not establish that Orbital2 prevents strain or injury.

How it compares with other control options
| Option | What it does well | Trade-off | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keyboard shortcuts | Universal, familiar and requires no dedicated controller. | Less tactile; may involve more hand movement or memorizing combinations. | People who already know their applications’ shortcuts or have varied, text-heavy work. |
| Pen-tablet express keys or touch rings | Integrated with a drawing surface many illustrators already use. | Controls and layering depend on the tablet; may provide fewer assignments. | Artists who want controls next to the pen workspace. |
| Stream Deck-style macro pad | Labeled displays make discrete commands visible at a glance. | Better suited to discrete button presses than continuous dial-style adjustments. | Editors and users who value visible command labels. |
| Multi-dial creative controller | Provides several physical controls for simultaneous or separate adjustments. | May take more desk space and uses a different control approach. | Users who prioritize multiple knobs over joystick-direction layers. |
| Orbital2 | Combines tilt, rotation, press, ring controls and profiles in a compact wired device. | Requires software, supported OS, configuration and learning the assignments. | People with recurring shortcut-heavy tasks who want a tactile, layered controller. |
These are differences in control philosophy, not a measured ranking of speed or ergonomics.

Buying advice: verify the exact model and current terms
BRAIN MAGIC’s U.S. availability announcement dates to March 2022; the official information cited here does not establish an August 2026 price, stock status, warranty or official retail support in every region. Treat old Kickstarter prices, launch listings and third-party product pages as historical, not as a current quote. Before buying, confirm that a listing is for the original Orbital2 rather than Orbital2 STERNA, identify the seller and return terms, check that the cable is present and suitable, and verify your operating system against BRAIN MAGIC’s current downloads. U.S. availability announcement · BRAIN MAGIC product site · BRAIN MAGIC Portal
Who should consider Orbital2?
Consider it if you spend long sessions in shortcut-heavy software, repeat a few commands often, want tactile access to them, and are prepared to build and maintain profiles. Skip it if you need wireless or native USB-C hardware, want minimal setup, switch contexts constantly, or expect a controller to replace a keyboard, mouse or drawing tablet. The key trade-off is flexibility against cognitive load: a small, deliberate set of assignments is more likely to be useful than mapping every available action.
