Original scraper bikes are creatively customized bicycles rooted in Oakland, where young riders turned paint, colorful spoke decorations and everyday materials into a distinctive form of self-expression. Their story connects hands-on making with youth creativity and community programming—not with one confirmed Maker Faire exhibit. Here’s what defines the style, how the movement developed, and how to approach a scraper-bike art project without treating decoration as a substitute for bicycle maintenance.

What are original scraper bikes?
A scraper bike is an ordinary bicycle customized with color and decoration, often with the most striking details on its wheels and spokes. Painted frames and rims, brightly colored duct tape and foil around the spokes are among the recognizable elements described by KQED. The Original Scraper Bike Team also describes decorations made from materials such as aluminum foil and candy wrappers.
One historical description mentions a small BMX frame with larger wheels, but that is an example, not a required specification. The style is defined more by personal customization than by a single frame, parts list or fixed recipe.

How the movement began in Oakland
The Original Scraper Bike Team traces the movement to Oakland and credits founder Tyrone Stevenson Jr. with coining the name in 2006. The team says Stevenson and his cousin Avery had been making bikes since childhood. In a KQED interview, Stevenson connected the idea to the era’s scraper cars: “It was a part of that time, with scraper cars, when everybody was moving, and being active.” He added, “Scraper bikes looked like cars and I wanted a car, so the second-best thing was a bike.”
The team describes scraper biking as a way to bring together youth self-expression, creativity, entrepreneurship and healthy living. Its account says the 2007 “Scraper Bikes” music video with the Trunk Boiz received over 3 million views worldwide. That is the organization’s reported figure, not an independently audited audience count.

What connects scraper bikes to making and community?
Customization turns a familiar object into a personal design project: riders choose colors, arrange materials and make a bicycle visibly their own. The Original Scraper Bike Team’s programs extend that making beyond decoration. Its workshop materials describe young people learning bike design and maintenance, alongside rides and community events. The California Arts Council also describes youth arts programming using bicycle customization, duct tape and paint.

An Oakland North report describes a youth course that paired decoration with bicycle safety and maintenance instruction. That pairing matters: a bike can be an art project and still needs to work as a bike.

How to think about a scraper-bike art project
There is no universal materials formula in the movement’s descriptions. A project can be planned around three practical choices, which are useful ways to organize the work rather than official categories used by the team:
- Material: Use new art supplies such as colored duct tape, or look for clean reusable materials such as foil and wrappers. The team’s descriptions include both approaches.
- Visual design: Decide on a color scheme and where the decoration will be most visible. Spokes, wheels, frame and rims all appear in descriptions of the style.
- Maintenance alongside art: Keep mechanical condition as a separate priority. The cited sources support combining customization with maintenance learning, but do not provide a technical safety standard, model-specific instructions or approval of particular materials for particular parts.
Colored duct tape is specifically named in a 2026 workshop listing and is one documented optional art material. Reclaimed foil and wrappers are also part of the described tradition. The sources do not identify a particular paint formulation, tool or brand, so no paint product or method can be recommended from them. Avoid treating any decoration as suitable for safety-critical parts.

Is there a specific Maker Faire scraper-bike exhibit?
The available accounts establish the Oakland movement and the Original Scraper Bike Team’s work, but do not identify a particular Maker Faire display, featured maker or event year associated with this title. They also do not establish a standard scraper-bike build or a technical construction and safety guide. The article’s connection to Maker Faire is therefore the broader link between hands-on making and inventive customization, not a claim about a confirmed Faire exhibit.
