Otedama (お手玉) is both the name of small fabric bags and the Japanese game played with them. Often glossed in English as “beanbag juggling,” it involves tossing and catching one or more bags; the exact number and patterns depend on the way people play.
What is otedama?
Otedama is a traditional Japanese game built around simple tosses and catches. Players can start with one bag, then try sequential throws or coordinate several bags. Some play while singing a counting song or traditional ditty. There is no single universal pattern: the Japan Forum notes that ways of playing vary by region.
The Chiba Prefectural Central Museum, Otone Branch, offers examples rather than a standardized rulebook: tossing a bag with one hand and catching it on the back of that hand, adding bags and throwing them in sequence, or coordinating throws with both hands. See the museum’s otedama examples.
How can you try it?
- Begin with one bag. Toss it gently and catch it in the same hand. When that feels comfortable, try catching it on the back of your hand, as in one of the museum’s examples.
- Add a second bag. Toss the bags in sequence, focusing on a steady rhythm rather than height. The museum also describes coordinated throws using both hands.
- Try a song or counting rhythm. Singing can accompany play, but the sources do not establish one required song or sequence.
These are starting points, not fixed rules. Adapt the number of bags and the pattern to your space and comfort. If buying a set, check its filling, size, number of bags, and whether it is made for play or decoration; no particular specification is established as best.

What are otedama bags made of?
The bags are fabric, but their fillings and shapes vary. The Japan Forum lists red azuki beans, rice kernels, and plastic pellets; the Japan Otedama Association also presents regional and folk-art variations and points to instructions for making a cushion-shaped bag. Do not assume every bag has the same weight or construction.
The Japan Forum’s educational page describes the bags as things played with by “juggling, throwing and catching several simultaneously,” sometimes while singing a traditional ditty. The association’s website is a resource for examples and making information.

Where does otedama come from?
The history is not settled by the sources cited here. The Japan Forum says the game’s origins are believed to go back to a game played by nomads near the Black Sea around 1200 B.C., with transmission along the Silk Road and into Japan over roughly 1,200 years. That is an attributed origin account, not a demonstrated archaeological conclusion. The Japan Otedama Association’s overview gives a different account, referring to invention by the Lydians in the fifth century B.C.; the available overview does not provide supporting historical documentation. These versions should not be merged into a single certain timeline.
