Our Lady of Guadalupe is a Catholic devotion centered on a traditional account of Mary appearing to Juan Diego at Tepeyac in December 1531. In the account, roses gathered by Juan Diego fell from his tilma before a bishop, revealing an image of Mary on the fabric. The image-associated tilma is preserved at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, and the feast is celebrated on December 12.
Who is Our Lady of Guadalupe?
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the name given to Mary in a devotion associated with Tepeyac, near present-day Mexico City. The devotion joins a story of reported appearances with a surviving image on a tilma, a traditional garment or cloak. Catholics honor Mary under this title, while the account of the apparitions and the miraculous appearance of the image belongs to Catholic tradition; those supernatural claims should not be confused with independently established historical conclusions.

The image is also important as a work of religious visual culture: for devotees, it is not simply a portrait, but the central visible sign of the Guadalupe story. Pope Francis, in a 2023 general audience, drew attention to the account’s portrayal of Mary in Indigenous clothing and speaking Juan Diego’s language. He interpreted this as a welcome to Indigenous peoples and an example of inculturation. That is the Pope’s theological interpretation of the account.
What happened to Juan Diego in the traditional account?
Vatican News and the Holy See recount the story as follows. Mary appeared to Juan Diego at Tepeyac on December 9, 1531, and asked him to seek a shrine there. Juan Diego brought her request to the bishop, Juan de Zumárraga, who asked for a sign. On December 12, Juan Diego gathered roses on the hill—an unexpected find in the account—and carried them in his tilma. When he opened the garment before the bishop, the roses fell and an image of Mary was seen on the fabric.

The Holy See’s 2023 catechesis describes Juan Diego as an Indigenous man about 55 years old at the time. Pope Francis’s 2024 feast homily, as reported by Vatican News, highlighted Mary’s reassuring words to Juan Diego: “Do not be afraid. Am I not here, I, who am your Mother?” The quotation expresses the pastoral meaning Francis drew from the story; it does not independently verify the apparition.
What is the tilma, and where is the image?
A tilma is a cloak or outer garment. In the Guadalupe tradition, it is the garment in which Juan Diego carried the roses and on which the image appeared. The image-associated tilma is kept at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, where it is a focus of prayer and pilgrimage.

Pope Francis summarized the story’s key visual elements in his 2023 feast homily: “The image, the tilma, the roses: this is the message. As simple as that, without any gloss.” The statement is a religious reading of the account and its imagery, not a finding about how the image was made.
What historical sources tell us about the story
The best-known written account is the Nican Mopohua, a text in Nahuatl. Vatican News describes it as a manuscript by the scholar Antonio Valeriano, written sometime after 1556. That approximate dating does not establish an exact year, resolve debates about authorship, or by itself settle broader historical questions about the apparitions and the image. It is useful to distinguish the surviving written tradition and the Church’s account from claims that would require independent historical corroboration.

When is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe?
The feast is celebrated on December 12, the date associated in the traditional story with Juan Diego’s presentation of the roses and the image to the bishop. The date is also a major occasion for public devotion at the basilica and beyond.
Why do pilgrims visit the Basilica of Guadalupe?
The basilica is the home of the image-associated tilma and the principal destination for devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe. Pilgrims come to pray, sing, seek blessings, and carry devotional images. An Associated Press report from December 12, 2025, described thousands of devotees arriving in Mexico City for the pilgrimage. In that report, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called the Virgin “a symbol of identity and peace for Mexicans”; that is her attributed description, not a claim that all Mexicans share the same belief or interpretation.

Visitor estimates vary by report and date. Vatican News reported more than 12 million visitors annually in 2024; a 2018 Vatican News article reported over 20 million annually. The sources do not explain the difference in methodology or reconcile the estimates, so neither should be presented as a definitive current count. Both convey the basilica’s scale as a pilgrimage destination without establishing one settled annual total.
How to understand the image respectfully
For Catholics, the image belongs to a living devotion that encompasses prayer, feast-day observance, pilgrimage, and the story of Juan Diego. For a historical or artistic account, it is important to label claims about the apparition and miraculous imprint as tradition or Church teaching rather than independently verified fact. Reproductions of the image, such as devotional prints or statues, are not the historic tilma preserved at the basilica.
