Design an outdoor kitchen around the way you cook, the path people take through the yard, and the utilities the site can support. Set the layout and appliance locations only after you have mapped circulation, prep, cooking, serving and cleanup. Choose the built-in grill before constructing its enclosure: every model has its own cutout dimensions, clearances, ventilation, fuel and approved-material requirements.

The safest project treats the kitchen as a small construction job, not a cabinet purchase. Confirm local permits and setbacks, coordinate qualified gas, electrical and plumbing trades where required, and design shelter, lighting, drainage, counters and storage as one system. The result should be easy to use, service and maintain in your climate.

Begin with use, site and workflow

Before drawing cabinets, describe a normal cooking day and a busy gathering. Decide whether the space is mainly for quick grilling, full meal preparation, entertaining a crowd, or all three. Chris Sothen, a project manager at Coppercreek Landscaping in Spokane, Washington, told Houzz, “Before you start planning where to put your outdoor kitchen, you should think about how you’ll use it.” That sequence prevents an attractive island from becoming a bottleneck.

Map the working route

Sketch the route from the house to the preparation counter, grill, serving point, sink or cleanup area, refrigerator and seating. Measure door swings and gates, and mark the path guests use to reach the table. Keep guest traffic from crossing directly in front of hot burners or an open oven. An open patio door should not collide with a cook, cabinet or appliance door.

  • INCLUDES THE ANGLE STUBBY MOST SETS LEAVE OUT — Professional painters know the 2 Inch Angle Stubby is the go-to brush for tight cabinet interiors, window sashes, inside corners, and detailed trim where standard angle brushes are too long. Combined with the 1.5 and 2.5 inch angle sash brushes you have precision cutting-in covered at every scale — baseboards, crown molding, door casings, and ceiling lines.
  • FLAT BRUSHES FOR BROAD SMOOTH COVERAGE ON ANY SURFACE — The 1 and 2 inch flat brushes deliver even coverage on walls, furniture, shelving, doors, fences, decks, and wood surfaces. Ideal for applying primers, stains, varnishes, polyurethane, and specialty coatings. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.

Mark existing gas, electrical, water and drainage connections before choosing a remote location. Moving the kitchen farther from the house can add trenching, conduit, pipe, shutoff access and surface restoration. Leave enough clear floor space for two people to pass without forcing one into the cooking zone.

Plan service and storage, not just cooking

List the items that need a home: fuel controls, tools, platters, waste and recycling, pans, seasonings, cushions and weather-sensitive equipment. Put frequently used tools beside the grill and reserve a dry, accessible cabinet for less-used items. If you expect to carry food from the indoor refrigerator, keep the preparation counter on the shortest practical route from the house.

Choose a layout that fits the site

Compact linear counters, L-shaped kitchens and U-shaped kitchens can all work. The best choice depends on site dimensions, circulation, prep surface, storage and utility routing rather than a universal “ideal” shape. The layout guidance from Houzz and the planning notes from Napoleon are useful starting points, but your appliance manuals and local rules control the final arrangement.

Layout Where it fits Advantages Design cautions
Single counter (linear) Narrow patios, balconies or a wall-side installation Small footprint, simple utility run and lower enclosure scope Prep, grill and cleanup compete for one line; guests may pass behind the cook
L-shaped Corner patios or areas that need a defined cooking zone Separates prep and cooking legs and can create a natural serving edge Inside corners need careful cabinet and countertop planning; doors can conflict if clearances are ignored
U-shaped Larger patios where substantial storage and prep are priorities Many work surfaces and short distances between stations Consumes more floor area and can feel enclosed; preserve a comfortable entrance and guest circulation

Place the grill, landing counter and prep surface before decorative panels. Check that refrigerator, trash and cabinet doors can open simultaneously where people stand. Draw the appliance fronts at full scale on the paving or use cardboard mock-ups; this exposes blocked walkways before construction begins.

Select the built-in grill before building its enclosure

A built-in grill is not an interchangeable insert. Obtain the current installation manual for the exact model, fuel configuration and market, then give that document to the designer, fabricator and installer. The opening, support, ventilation, gas connection, electrical outlet and clearances must all be designed around it.

Example of model-specific dimensions

For the North American Napoleon Prestige 500 model BIP500RB, the manufacturer manual specifies an opening 30 3/4 inches wide, 20 5/8 inches deep and 8 7/8 inches high. Those dimensions apply to that model and manual only; they are not a universal outdoor-grill cutout. Verify the current documentation before cutting any counter or cabinet. Read the Prestige 500 North American manual.

Enclosure, ventilation and fuel safety

  • The cited manual requires a non-combustible enclosure and installation and servicing by a qualified installer in accordance with local codes.
  • It calls for at least 10 square inches of ventilation at each end of the cabinet for that model.
  • It warns that a propane cylinder must not be stored below the grill.
  • The installation diagram recommends a 34-inch height and shows the outdoor GFI outlet location; reconcile both with the exact product instructions and local electrical requirements.

Do not copy these figures to another grill. Natural-gas and propane versions can have different connections and enclosure rules. A qualified gas installer should perform gas modifications and installations. In the modular-island guidance, the manufacturer also warns against blocking refrigerator-cabinet vents. See the modular island guide.

Design shelter, smoke escape and lighting together

A pergola, roof or other overhead structure changes how smoke and heat move. The planning guidance from Houzz cautions against trapping cooking exhaust; open beams or a suitable hood are examples discussed there. Use the grill manufacturer’s required clearances and ventilation details as the controlling information for the appliance. A roof that looks comfortable from the seating area can still direct smoke toward doors, windows or occupied areas.

Include lighting in the electrical plan before surfaces are closed. Task lighting should illuminate the grill controls, thermometer, prep counter and sink without shining into people’s eyes. Plan switch locations, weather-rated fixtures and outlet placement with the electrician, and protect circuits as required by local code and the appliance instructions.

Specify materials for rain, sun, grease and heat

Outdoor finishes face precipitation, freeze-thaw or heat cycles, ultraviolet light, grease and repeated cleaning. Select the enclosure, fasteners, adhesives and countertop as a coordinated assembly, and confirm that each material is approved for its location and temperature exposure.

Material or claim What the cited source says Questions to resolve before ordering
Natural stone, including granite Houzz identifies natural stone such as granite as an outdoor-counter option. What sealing schedule, edge detail, local fabrication lead time and repair method apply to your climate?
Concrete The same article notes that concrete can develop hairline cracks. How will the fabricator handle reinforcement, movement, staining, sealing and future patching?
Powder-coated galvanneal steel Napoleon markets this material as corrosion resistant on its modular products. Treat that as a manufacturer claim, not independent comparative testing; check coating care, warranty terms and cut-edge protection.

Counter choice should account for installed cost, sealing and maintenance, heat performance, appearance, climate suitability and repairability. Keep combustible finishes away from appliance areas unless the appliance documentation expressly permits them. Coordinate counter overhangs and access panels so shutoffs and service points remain reachable.

Coordinate utilities, permits and trades

The scope may include a patio or base, cabinets, countertops, shade structure, gas supply, water, drainage, electrical outlets, lighting and appliance setup. Depending on the project, you may need an electrician, plumber, gas professional, countertop specialist, landscape contractor or design-build firm. Houzz’s professional-planning guidance recommends asking who coordinates subcontractors and what the contract includes.

Questions for prospective installers

  • Can you show comparable outdoor-kitchen projects in a similar climate and construction type?
  • Who obtains permits, schedules inspections and coordinates gas, electrical and plumbing work?
  • Which base, cabinets, counters, appliances, utility connections, drainage and finish work are included?
  • How are access panels, shutoffs, warranty service and future appliance replacement handled?
  • What is the schedule, and how are substitutions and written change orders priced?

Permit, setback, fire-separation and utility requirements vary by municipality and property. Contact the local building department and utility providers before excavation or ordering fabricated components. The grill manual and local code take precedence over general design advice. Project duration also varies with complexity, inspections and permitting; do not rely on a generic timetable.

Use this installation sequence

  1. Survey the site. Record dimensions, grades, drainage, prevailing exposure, property lines, door swings, seating and existing utility points.
  2. Define the brief. List meals, guest capacity, appliances, storage, prep area, cleanup method and whether the kitchen is seasonal or year-round.
  3. Check rules and services. Ask the building department and utilities about permits, setbacks, gas, electrical, water and drainage requirements before finalizing the footprint.
  4. Select appliances. Download current manuals, confirm fuel type and service access, and select the built-in grill before drawing its opening.
  5. Draw the layout. Test linear, L-shaped or U-shaped options for circulation, door conflicts, landing space, prep and storage. Mark task-lighting and outlet locations.
  6. Engineer the base and enclosure. Specify non-combustible construction where required, appliance clearances, cabinet ventilation, access panels and a stable, drainable foundation.
  7. Install utilities. Have qualified trades run and test gas, electrical, water and drainage work to approved plans and local code before surfaces conceal it.
  8. Set counters and appliances. Verify the opening against the manual, protect finished surfaces, install the grill and other appliances, and keep required vents unobstructed.
  9. Commission the kitchen. Test ignition, burners, outlets, lighting, refrigerator ventilation, water flow, drainage and shutoffs. Keep manuals, inspection records and warranty information in a dry location.

Modular or custom: compare the complete scope

Modular islands can simplify repeatable cabinet dimensions and utility knockouts, while custom construction can respond to unusual walls, grades, appliance combinations and architectural details. Neither is automatically better. Compare the complete installed result, not the cabinet shell alone.

Decision factor Modular approach Custom construction
Site fit Best when standard widths and depths suit the patio; verify every dimension. Can adapt to irregular boundaries, levels and existing structures.
Appliance compatibility Confirm the kit accepts the exact grill, refrigerator and accessories. Openings can be tailored, but errors become fabrication and schedule risks.
Utility service Knockouts and removable panels may help; never block appliance vents. Service access is designed specifically, but must be documented and built correctly.
Materials and weather Review the manufacturer’s enclosure, coating, care and warranty information. Select materials with the builder and verify outdoor and heat suitability.
Countertops Options may be limited to supported sizes and edge details. More freedom for stone, concrete or other specified surfaces, with site-fabrication implications.
Total installed scope Include base preparation, delivery, assembly, counters, utilities, permits and appliance installation. Include design, fabrication, trades, inspections, finishes and change-order exposure.

Understand cost context without using an obsolete budget as a quote

A Houzz article published roughly a decade before this guide reported $30,000 to $100,000 for elaborate or custom outdoor kitchens, depending on location and accessories. That is a historical, article-era estimate—not a current national average, representative survey or present-day quote. Use it only to understand the possible scale of a complex project, then obtain written local bids. See the historical cost discussion.

Request line-item pricing for demolition or base work, framing, cabinets, counters, appliances, gas, electrical, plumbing, drainage, shade, lighting, permits, inspections, delivery and finish repairs. Ask which allowances can change and what happens if concealed conditions or utility upgrades are discovered. A low cabinet price can conceal substantial site and trade work.

Plan maintenance and future service

  • Follow the appliance maker’s cleaning, cover and seasonal-shutdown instructions; do not seal or obstruct required vents.
  • Inspect visible gas connections, shutoffs, cords, GFI protection, cabinet bottoms and drainage points at intervals appropriate to your climate.
  • Clean grease from surfaces and check that water cannot stand against cabinets, counters or the foundation.
  • Maintain counter sealers and repair chips, failed caulk or coating damage before moisture reaches the substrate.
  • Keep a diagram showing utility routes and appliance model numbers so a technician can work without guesswork.

Common planning failures and fixes

  • The grill does not fit: stop fabrication, recheck the current manual and have the installer verify the opening and support; never force an appliance into a short or narrow cutout.
  • Smoke collects under the roof: stop using the area until ventilation and clearances are reviewed; modify the shelter or add an approved hood solution through a qualified professional.
  • Guests block the cook: move seating or serving access and preserve a clear route around hot zones rather than narrowing the cooking aisle.
  • Utilities are inaccessible: add removable panels and clearly marked shutoffs during construction; do not bury connections behind permanently sealed finishes.
  • Cabinets weather prematurely: identify the exposure, improve drainage and ventilation, and follow the enclosure manufacturer’s coating and repair instructions.

Make the final decision from the site outward

A successful outdoor kitchen is the smallest, safest arrangement that supports your actual meals and guests while leaving utilities, ventilation and service accessible. Select the site and workflow first, then the layout, exact appliances, enclosure, shelter, finishes and trades. Compare modular and custom proposals by total installed scope and long-term maintenance, and verify every model-specific requirement against current manufacturer documentation and local code before construction.
