You can use paint to turn suitable outdoor brickwork into a garden focal point, a quiet backdrop, or a coordinated planter—but painting an exterior brick wall is not a risk-free cosmetic change. Before choosing a design, check the brick, moisture conditions, and paint system: film-forming paint can trap moisture, and some brick surfaces are poor candidates for painting.
Check whether the brick is suitable before painting
The Brick Industry Association generally advises against traditional paint on brick because a film-forming coating can seal the surface and trap moisture. For an opaque, smoother painted finish, it recommends mineral-based paint, which it says remains vapor-permeable and chemically binds to masonry. It also advises against painting glazed brick. These are the association’s industry recommendations, not a universal building-code rule. Brick Industry Association: Is it safe to paint the brickwork on the exterior of my house?
Before you paint, inspect for moisture problems and deterioration. The Canadian Conservation Institute identifies moisture as a primary threat to exterior murals: moisture and freeze-thaw cycles can contribute to paint flaking and brick spalling. Look for efflorescence, damp patterns, deteriorated mortar, or water runoff problems. If you find them, address the cause before considering a coating, and seek qualified masonry advice if the wall’s condition is uncertain. - Glazed brick: The Brick Industry Association recommends against painting it.
- Older or red-clay brick: The Canadian Conservation Institute says these walls are not considered a good choice for a mural.
- Brick with moisture or mortar problems: Resolve the underlying issue before painting; a design cannot make a damp or deteriorating wall suitable.
- Uncertain paint compatibility: Check local product labeling and consult a masonry professional rather than assuming a product is right for every brick or climate.
For traditional paint on brick, the Brick Industry Association says maintenance and recoating are generally needed approximately every 3–5 years. That is its stated approximate interval, not a guarantee for every wall or paint system. Brick Industry Association: Is it safe to paint the brickwork on the exterior of my house?

Five outdoor decorating ideas for painted bricks
1. Add a simple feature shape
Treat a garden wall as a canvas for one clear motif. Dulux suggests a circle as an approachable feature: use a piece of string to mark the outline, then fill it with a contrasting paint color. Choose the color relationship to suit the plants and surroundings rather than assuming one pairing works everywhere. Dulux: Garden wall painting ideas
2. Make a restful light backdrop
An off-white wall can sit quietly behind greenery and make the garden feel brighter. Dulux offers this as a calm garden backdrop; complete the setting with foliage, seating, or pots in a way that suits your space. A pale wall is a matter of taste, and the result will depend on the light and colors around it. Dulux: Garden wall painting ideas
3. Use color blocking or stripes
A horizontal division or stripe gives a wall a more graphic look without requiring a complex image. Dulux describes painting the top half in a neutral color and adding a contrasting warm tone as a color block. Before committing, mark out the proposed division and view it from the parts of the garden where you will see it most. Dulux: Garden wall painting ideas

- GREAT FOR HIGHLY POROUS SURFACES: Brightens the appearance of stucco, stone, brick and wood while letting natural surface texture shine through
- CUSTOMIZABLE COVERAGE: Can be diluted with water to achieve your desired coverage
- SELF PRIMING AND SEALING: All in one formula allows for quick and easy application with a smooth finish
- LOW VOC: Water-based formula is low odor and low VOC allowing for a more comfortable painting experience
- SMOOTH FINISH: Achieve a smooth, matte finish on both interior and exterior surfaces
4. Stencil a cinderblock planter
Stenciling can bring a small decorative pattern to a cinderblock planter. Rust-Oleum’s project uses spray paint on cinderblocks and places landscaping fabric between blocks where needed. Follow the project as an example of a block planter treatment, not as proof that the same spray paint or method suits every outdoor brick, block, or planting setup. Rust-Oleum: Cinder Block Planter
5. Paint a mural—or use a separate support
A mural can make a suitable wall the garden’s focal point, but the brick and conditions matter more than the design. The Canadian Conservation Institute advises against painting in extreme weather and identifies older or red-clay brick as a poor mural choice. If direct painting is unsuitable, a separate support can be painted in controlled conditions and relocated; that offers more control and reversibility, but does not remove the need to consider how it is mounted and exposed to weather. Paint labeled for exterior masonry is a natural starting point for a garden wall, but the product category alone does not establish compatibility with every brick. The Brick Industry Association’s preference for mineral-based paint on opaque painted brick reflects its concern about moisture trapped by film-forming coatings. Confirm that the selected system is suitable for your specific masonry and follow the manufacturer’s preparation and application directions. Dulux’s UK garden-wall guidance says to clean the wall and treat mold before painting. Its page makes product-specific claims for Weathershield All Weather Protection Smooth Masonry Paint: protection against weather conditions for up to 15 years and shower resistance in 30 minutes. These are manufacturer claims for that named product, not independent test results or general promises about masonry paint; Dulux UK product names, formulas, availability, and claims may not apply elsewhere. Coordinate painted brick with the rest of the garden
Repeat a wall color on pots or planters to connect the backdrop to the foreground; Dulux suggests this as a way to link indoor and outdoor spaces. Dulux: Garden wall painting ideas Brick paving or edging can also contribute to the scheme, but do not assume a wall coating is appropriate on a walking surface. The Singapore National Parks Board’s pathway advice emphasizes weatherproofing in tropical settings and stable, sufficiently wide paths; it does not assess paint coatings or slip resistance. For any painted paving, check product suitability and traction rather than treating decorative wall-paint guidance as a safe paving specification. National Parks Board: Pathway design
