Choose ibisPaint if you want to draw on an iPad, phone, Android tablet, Mac, or Windows device; make manga; or move work between devices. Choose PaintTool SAI if you use Windows and want a focused painting and linework workflow with a one-time license. Neither is universally better: these are different kinds of drawing applications, and your device and workflow matter more than a feature-count contest.

Quick verdict

If you need… Better fit Why
A focused Windows painting workflow PaintTool SAI Its core strengths are pressure-sensitive painting and a restrained interface.
iPad, iPhone, Android, Mac, or cross-device drawing ibisPaint It is available across those platforms and offers cloud synchronization.
Manga panels, tones, lettering, and animation ibisPaint Its official feature list includes dedicated manga and animation tools.
A perpetual Windows license PaintTool SAI Ver.1 SYSTEMAX lists a one-time license with no time limit for Ver.1.
A free way to try drawing software ibisPaint Free mobile and limited desktop demo options are available.
A particularly minimal interface PaintTool SAI It concentrates on painting rather than a broad mobile, social, and materials ecosystem.

There is an important version distinction: SAI Ver.1 is the stable product, while SAI Ver.2 downloads are technical previews, not a finished general release. The official SAI product page lists Ver.1.2.5; the Development Room labels Ver.2 builds as previews.

What each application is

PaintTool SAI: a focused Windows painting program

PaintTool SAI is a raster painting application from SYSTEMAX. Its official product information describes pressure-sensitive digitizer support, anti-aliased drawing, 16-bit ARGB channels, a simple interface, and data-protection functionality. SAI also has dedicated linework layers. Those features make it appealing to artists who want to spend their time drawing rather than navigating a large set of app modes and content libraries. See the official SAI page and SAI manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listed stable Ver.1.2.5 is a 32-bit Windows application. SYSTEMAX lists Windows XP through Windows 11, at least 1 GB memory on Vista or later, 512 MB free disk space, a 1024×768 display, and a Wintab-compatible pressure-sensitive digitizer. Its page explicitly says Ver.1 does not support high-DPI monitors. That combination matters more than the broad Windows version list: a modern Windows computer may run it, but a high-resolution display or stylus setup deserves particular scrutiny.

ibisPaint: a mobile-origin illustration and manga ecosystem

ibisPaint began as a mobile drawing app and is now offered for iPhone and iPad, Android, Windows, and Mac. Its feature set spans illustration and manga tools, filters and materials, animation, drawing-process video, sharing, and cloud storage. The application is capable of serious illustration and manga work; calling it merely a beginner app overlooks its breadth. The trade-off is a busier interface and features whose availability can depend on platform and paid tier. See the platform overview and feature list.

Brushes and lineart: feel versus breadth

Brushes and pressure response

There is no objective winner on brush feel established by the published feature lists. SAI emphasizes pressure-sensitive painting and a focused brush workflow. ibisPaint’s official feature page advertises more than 47,000 brush types, more than 23,000 materials, and brush rendering up to 120 fps. Those are first-party marketing figures, not a measurement of latency, pressure response, brush quality, or ease of finding the right tool. Counts and access may vary by platform, version, or tier.

In practical terms, SAI suits artists who prefer to build a personal painting routine around a smaller, painting-centered environment. ibisPaint suits those who value a large preset and material library, manga resources, and more built-in ways to experiment. More choices can help, but they can also take time to browse and organize.

Lineart and stabilization

SAI has dedicated linework layers and pressure-sensitive input, features central to its lineart reputation. That does not prove that it produces smoother lines than ibisPaint for every artist or device. ibisPaint also offers vector tools, rulers, shape tools, and drawing controls useful for clean lines and constructed artwork; some advanced tools depend on platform or tier. Its manga tools add practical options for panel work and perspective.

  • Choose SAI if you work on Windows and want its dedicated linework workflow.
  • Choose ibisPaint if you need to ink on a phone, tablet, Mac, or across devices, or want rulers and manga construction tools in the same app.

Both can support serious lineart. The difference is workflow and device access, not a simple capable-versus-incapable distinction.

Manga, comics, and animation

Manga and comic tools

ibisPaint is the clearer choice when manga production tools are a priority. Its official feature list includes screen tones, frame division, speech bubbles, text input, more than 2,100 fonts, and rulers for straight lines, circles, ellipses, saturated lines, and perspective. This keeps many common manga tasks close to the drawing canvas.

SAI can be used to make comic artwork and lineart, but its current official materials do not establish an equivalent set of page-construction, lettering, and manga-layout tools. If those are central to your process, do not assume SAI Ver.2 previews fill that gap; check the specific preview documentation rather than treating an unfinished branch as a stable production feature set.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Animation

ibisPaint explicitly lists animation tools, including frame copying and onion skinning. The Windows and Mac product pages indicate that animation availability depends on tier. The official SAI pages cited here do not establish comparable animation support, so choose ibisPaint if built-in animation is a requirement.

Platforms, synchronization, and offline work

Where you can use each app

Platform PaintTool SAI ibisPaint
Windows Yes; Ver.1.2.5 is 32-bit, with high-DPI limitations Yes
Mac No official Mac version listed Yes; macOS 11 Big Sur or newer
iPhone/iPad No official version listed Yes; iOS/iPadOS 15 or newer
Android No official version listed Yes; Android 7 or newer

ibisPaint lists Windows 10 version 2004 or newer and Windows 11 version 21H2 or newer. Its Windows version requires Windows Ink-compatible stylus/touch hardware. SAI’s stated digitizer requirement is Wintab-compatible input. If your stylus or tablet is central to the decision, check its compatibility rather than assuming both applications handle input in the same way. Sources: ibisPaint platform requirements, ibisPaint for Windows, and SAI requirements.

Moving work between devices

ibisPaint offers cloud synchronization between mobile and Windows/Mac versions. It is not automatic merely because both apps are installed: the product instructions require enabling synchronization and signing in with the same authenticated account. The Windows and Mac pages list up to 64 MB of cloud storage for non-premium users and up to 20 GB for premium members. Keep a local backup as well; cloud sync is a transfer and storage convenience, not a reason to keep your only copy in one place. See the Mac synchronization instructions.

SAI does not document an equivalent account-based cloud workflow in the cited official pages. Its license is tied to a computer’s System ID, so moving or reinstalling Windows involves obtaining a certificate for the new System ID. That is manageable, but less seamless than signing in to a cross-device service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Offline use

For a conventional offline Windows workflow, SAI is well suited once installed and licensed. SYSTEMAX even documents how to transfer a license certificate to an offline computer using a network-connected computer and USB storage in its license FAQ. ibisPaint can be used for drawing offline, but installation through the Microsoft Store or Mac App Store, some features, purchases, and cloud functions require internet access. Separate the ability to draw offline from installation, activation, purchases, or synchronization.

Pricing and what a purchase covers

The figures below are platform-specific US-dollar or Japanese-yen price signals displayed on official pages observed on August 18, 2026. Store prices can vary by country and region; check the current checkout or in-app purchase screen before paying.

Platform / product Free or trial access One-time option Subscription
PaintTool SAI Ver.1 31-day full-function trial; opening and saving are disabled after the trial ¥5,500 including Japanese tax for a Ver.1 license, with no time limit for Ver.1 Not listed
ibisPaint mobile ibisPaint X free version $15.99 paid version $2.99/month or $27.99/year
ibisPaint Windows Demo limited to one hour per day $62.99 Pro Upgrade $4.49/month or $27.99/year
ibisPaint Mac Demo limited to one hour per day $62.99 Pro Upgrade $4.99/month or $29.99/year

SAI’s listed license covers Ver.1, including minor upgrades within that major version. SYSTEMAX says a Ver.2 upgrade is planned as an exceptional free upgrade; that is a forward-looking notice, not a completed release or a reason to assume final terms. Check the current SAI notice before purchase. The page displays the price in yen and says the payment service converts currency automatically.

ibisPaint’s mobile and desktop payment structures differ. A mobile purchase should not be treated as one universal license that automatically covers Windows and Mac. On desktop, the listed Pro Upgrade and Premium Membership remove the daily demo usage limit; Premium additionally raises cloud storage to the listed 20 GB from 64 MB for other users. Feature access differs by tier. See the mobile, Windows, and Mac pages for current terms.

Files and handoff to other apps

ibisPaint for Windows lists BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, PSD, and IPV as input formats, and JPEG, PNG, PSD, and IPV as output formats. The Mac version additionally lists HEIC as an input format. PSD support is useful for interchange, but it does not guarantee that every layer effect, text element, vector, mask, or blend behavior will look or remain editable identically in another application. Test a representative file before making PSD transfer a critical production dependency. Sources: Windows formats and Mac formats.

Learning curve and best fit by artist

Beginners

ibisPaint is easier to try because a free mobile version is available and many users can start on a device they already own. Tutorials, materials, and sharing features can help exploration. Its extensive tools and presets can also make the interface feel crowded. SAI has fewer competing features and can be easier to settle into once a beginner has a Windows drawing setup and knows painting is the goal, but it is less convenient to try across devices and its license process is more technical than an app-store purchase.

Windows lineart or painting artist

SAI is a strong fit if you want a dedicated Windows painting program, use a compatible pressure-sensitive tablet, prefer a restrained workflow, and value a perpetual Ver.1 license. Consider the 32-bit architecture and lack of high-DPI support before buying, especially on a modern high-resolution display.

iPad or Android manga artist

ibisPaint is the practical choice because SAI has no official mobile version listed. Panels, screen tones, text, speech bubbles, rulers, and animation are reasons to choose it beyond simple convenience. Check which tools and storage are included on your chosen platform and tier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Artist moving between phone, tablet, and computer

ibisPaint is built for this kind of workflow, but configure synchronization with the same account on each device, confirm transfers, and retain local backups. Do not assume a mobile purchase unlocks every desktop version.

Existing SAI user considering Ver.2

Continue to treat Ver.1 as the stable option unless you are deliberately evaluating preview software. The Development Room lists technical-preview releases dated July 2 and July 27, 2026, with separate branches and requirements. SYSTEMAX warns that previews are under development and may contain bugs or inconveniences. Keep Ver.1 installed separately, back up project files and exports, and avoid depending on a preview for deadline-critical work. See the Development Room.

Switching computers or troubleshooting setup

Moving a SAI license to a new Windows installation

  1. Install SAI on the new Windows computer and launch it.
  2. Open Others → System ID and record the new ID.
  3. Use the official license certificate page with your existing license number and certificate password to download a certificate for that System ID.
  4. Place the downloaded certificate in the SAI program folder, then restart SAI.

The license FAQ documents the computer-change process. Keep your license information accessible before replacing a computer or reinstalling Windows.

Setting up ibisPaint cloud transfer

  • Enable cloud synchronization in the mobile app.
  • Enable it in the Windows or Mac version and authenticate with the same account.
  • Confirm the artwork is present on the destination device before relying on the transfer.
  • Retain local copies of important work instead of using cloud storage as the only backup.

When neither is the right only application

Neither SAI nor ibisPaint is a universal replacement for specialist software. If you need professional page layout, advanced typography, robust vector illustration, prepress and color-management controls, high-end 3D references, sophisticated animation, or a mature collaboration workflow, assess a tool built around that requirement rather than assuming either drawing app covers it. Linux support is also not established for either product in the platform information cited here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For desktop raster painting across Windows, macOS, and Linux, Krita is an alternative to investigate. For manga, comics, and animation workflows, Clip Studio Paint is another option, though its breadth may feel more complex than ibisPaint. iPad artists can compare Procreate; Adobe-ecosystem users may consider Adobe Fresco. These are alternatives to assess against a specific unmet need, not automatic upgrades over either app.

Final recommendation

For most new users choosing without a strong Windows-only preference, ibisPaint is the more flexible starting point: it has a free entry path, runs on mobile and desktop platforms, and brings manga tools and cross-device features together. Choose SAI instead when you specifically want a focused Windows painting and linework environment and accept Ver.1’s age, 32-bit architecture, high-DPI limitation, and computer-specific license handling. If you already use SAI, the Ver.2 technical previews are a separate evaluation—not a reason to treat the stable product as discontinued or the preview as finished.
