What makes the makeover feel Palm Springs
Palm Springs style is less about copying a particular house than combining a few recognisable visual decisions. The feature interprets it through clean, strong lines; low-slung, single-storey architecture; flat or butterfly roofs; broad glass connections to the garden; and shaded terraces. The palette is predominantly white, with vivid accents used sparingly so the result stays bright rather than busy.
For an outdoor room, shade and garden connection matter as much as colour. A pergola or covered terrace makes the area usable in strong sun, while planting, gravel and large stones keep the transition between patio and garden deliberate. Furniture should look comfortable enough for a long lunch but retain the simple, mid-century silhouette associated with the style.

From blank wall to a colour anchor

Plan the paint palette before buying anything
Use white as the visual field
White is the unifying background in this interpretation of Palm Springs style. On an exterior wall, choose a coating intended for the specific surface and exposure, and test a sample where it will receive the same sun and shade as the finished area. Outdoor light changes throughout the day; a colour that looks neutral in a store can appear warmer, cooler or more reflective on a large wall.
Reserve aqua for one decisive surface
The feature’s aqua wall demonstrates a useful painting principle: a saturated colour has more impact when it is given a clear boundary. Paint the wall as a complete plane, including consistent preparation at corners and around openings, rather than stopping at an arbitrary height. Keep adjacent surfaces quiet so the bar and wall read as one designed vignette.

Before painting, remove loose material, dirt and grease, allow the surface to dry, and repair cracks or holes with products compatible with the substrate. Masonry and previously coated surfaces may require different primers. A merbau timber bar top should be prepared and finished according to the coating manufacturer’s instructions for exterior timber; do not assume the same product used on a wall is suitable for a worktop exposed to food, moisture and abrasion.
Protect the edges of the colour block
Use straight, well-sealed masking lines where aqua meets white. Work in manageable sections and respect the coating’s recoat and curing times, especially in humid or cool weather. Keep the area protected from rain, dust and foot traffic until the finish has cured; the exact interval depends on the product and conditions, not on the makeover feature.
Make the concrete-block bar the focal point
The distinctive DIY element is a bar built from concrete blocks with a merbau timber top. The blocks provide a strong, graphic base that suits the clean-lined architecture, while the timber adds warmth and a practical surface for serving. Colour and serving pieces
Citrus arranged in cane or timber bowls brings a vivid, temporary accent to the white-and-aqua scheme. Because the colour comes from something that can be moved or replaced, it can change with the season without repainting. Keep bowls and serving items on a stable, protected surface away from appliance heat and rain.

- Survey the area. Record the position of doors, windows, drainage, existing power or gas, prevailing weather and the path guests use to reach the garden.
- Draw the zones. Mark the bar, cooking appliances, dining table, primary seating and a quieter chair on a scaled plan. Keep appliance doors, chair pull-outs and walking routes clear.
- Resolve shade first. Decide whether an existing roof, pergola or another structure provides adequate cover. Verify any new work against local approval and structural requirements.
- Prepare the surfaces. Clean and repair walls, masonry and timber before applying finishes. Protect paving, plants and appliances from dust and paint.
- Paint the background. Apply the predominantly white finish to prepared surfaces, then establish the aqua wall with carefully controlled edges and suitable exterior coatings.
- Build or commission the bar. Use the concrete-block and merbau-timber concept, but obtain dimensions, structural advice and installation details for your site rather than guessing from photographs.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Too many accent colours
Several bright walls, cushions and accessories can erase the calm white field. Keep the strongest permanent accent to the aqua wall and let smaller, replaceable items provide secondary colour.
Furniture packed too tightly
A bar, dining table and lounge chairs all need operating space. If stools block the refrigerator or chairs collide with the table, remove a piece or reduce the table size before adding more decoration.
Copying desert planting without checking conditions
