PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer is Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2026. Pantone announced the selection on December 4, 2025, describing the shade as a lofty, billowy white associated with calm, clarity, focus and creative openness. The choice is made by experts at the Pantone Color Institute, whose trend-led process considers broad cultural and design signals rather than a published public scoring formula.

TIME reported that this is the first white chosen since Pantone’s Color of the Year program began in 1999. That is historical framing from TIME’s report, not an independently audited Pantone record.

Why did Pantone choose Cloud Dancer?

A visual pause in a noisy moment

Pantone says Cloud Dancer reflects a desire for quiet reflection, relaxation and clarity amid distraction. Its white is framed as a simplification: a restrained background that can help people focus and give other colors room.

Space for creativity

The institute also describes the shade as open and adaptable. In design terms, a pale neutral can support many palettes instead of dictating a single color story. Pantone’s interpretation is cultural and symbolic; it is not evidence that looking at Cloud Dancer produces a measured psychological effect.

Pantone’s stated rationale

“At this time of transformation, when we are reimagining our future and our place in the world, PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer is a discrete white hue offering a promise of clarity.”

— Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute

“A conscious statement of simplification, Cloud Dancer enhances our focus, providing release from the distraction of external influences.”

— Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute

Those statements explain the intended meaning behind the choice. They should be read as Pantone’s design outlook, not as clinical or experimental findings.

Who picks Pantone’s Color of the Year?

The selection is made by experts at the Pantone Color Institute. Pantone’s explanation says the team studies broad cultural and design influences, then chooses a color whose name and story communicate why it matters.

TIME describes a global team examining signals that can include new technologies, social values, art collections and travel destinations, while assessing the mood among designers and consumers. This is a high-level account of the process. Pantone has not published a reproducible scoring system or the complete internal deliberations for Cloud Dancer.

“There’s reasons why people gravitate to certain color families when they do. For us, it really is zeroing in on a color family that we see bubbling up across all areas of design, and then from there, drilling it down into the color that we see.”

— Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, quoted by TIME

How the selection process works in practice

  1. Scan cultural signals: Pantone’s specialists look across design, technology, society, art and other visible cultural activity.
  2. Identify an emerging color family: The team looks for a hue family appearing across multiple areas rather than relying on one product or event.
  3. Interpret the moment: Experts connect the color’s visual character with the mood or needs they believe are shaping design and consumer culture.
  4. Choose and name the shade: The final color and its name are presented as a coherent story, as Cloud Dancer was presented as a lofty white offering calm and clarity.

Because the institute does not publish a numerical formula for the 2026 decision, outsiders cannot reproduce the choice by calculating a public score or ranking the evidence. The process is expert interpretation informed by trends, not a consumer vote or a laboratory result.

What Cloud Dancer means for painters and designers

Use it as a visual reset

As a very light neutral, Cloud Dancer can serve as a quiet field around stronger colors. It is suited to concepts that call for lightness, simplicity or an uncluttered atmosphere, provided the finished material and lighting support that effect.

Do not treat the name as a paint formula

PANTONE 11-4201 is a color-system reference, not a universal wall-paint recipe. A physical paint mix, printed sample or digital display can differ because of pigments, sheen, substrate, lighting and color management. For an exact project match, use an approved Pantone reference and confirm the result with a physical sample.

Choose by context, not by the annual label

The Color of the Year is a trend signal, not a requirement. Compare Cloud Dancer with the surrounding colors, the room or subject, the light source and the finish you actually plan to use. Pantone’s available material does not provide a technical measurement table ranking Cloud Dancer against alternative whites.

Where to verify the color physically

Professionals who need a printed reference can use a Pantone 2026 Formula Guide. A third-party listing describes a limited-edition guide with a full page on Cloud Dancer and information about why the color was chosen. That listing does not establish current stock, availability or any particular retailer relationship, so check the seller’s current details before purchasing.
