Purple quilt patterns range from small table projects and wall hangings to lap quilts, throws, and bed quilts. Choose first by finished use and size, then by construction method and fabric plan: a precut-strip throw, a fat-quarter-friendly patchwork quilt, and a foundation-pieced design call for different materials and skills.
Choose a purple quilt pattern by project
American Patchwork & Quilting Editors’ collection of 20 purple-themed projects, updated February 16, 2021, is a useful starting point for browsing different scales and color combinations. The editors write, “Add purple to your next project for an element of surprise.” Treat the collection as inspiration and confirm that a pattern’s current page and instructions are available before planning around it.
- For a wall hanging: Purple Play pairs purple and pink brights with black and white neutrals.
- For a table: Playful Purple Place Setting uses purple geometrics for a runner and matching placemats; Vivid Hexagon Table Topper sets floral hexagons against a solid purple background.
- For a throw: Plum Pudding Quilt uses simplified blocks made from purple precut strips and batik borders.
- For a bed quilt and matching pillows: Pastel Delectable Mountains combines purple with green and blue.
- For a technique-focused project: On the Fly uses foundation-pieced dragonfly blocks in violet, periwinkle, and lavender. Other collection examples include Irish Chain blocks, four-patch construction, and purple batiks.
These examples show two broad palette options: work mostly within purple shades, or pair purple with neighbors and contrasts such as green, blue, pink, coral, navy, gray, orange, or yellow. The collection includes both approaches; choose the one that suits the room and fabrics you want to use.
Compare size, skill, construction, and fabric plan
Finished dimensions and construction affect how much fabric to buy and how much piecing a project involves. The Violet Quilt is one pattern with useful published decision details, while Janome’s Strips and Flowers Lap Quilt gives a concrete material list. Their specifications are not interchangeable.

The Violet Quilt details here come from the publisher’s surfaced search excerpt, not a successfully loaded publisher page. Check the live pattern page before purchase or use. Robert Kaufman has multiple listings with different dimensions and fabric selections, so check the specific edition rather than combining details across listings. The Violet page also offers a rainbow variation, coloring pages, PDF and paper formats, and a five-week sew-along; verify what is currently available on the selected page.
Plan purple fabric for the pattern you chose
For a fabric-shopping search, purple quilting cotton fabric is a relevant starting phrase. The examples span solids, coordinated prints, florals, batiks, and precut strips. A fat-quarter bundle can suit a pattern designed for that format, but check its full material list, piece sizes, and print scale first. Large motifs need room to read clearly; The Violet Quilt’s separated feature fabrics are specifically described as accommodating larger-scale prints.

Janome’s 58-inch square lap quilt: one concrete bill of materials
Janome’s Strips and Flowers Lap Quilt calls for:
- 1 yard of light purple floral fabric for the center
- 1 2/3 yards of dark purple solid for borders and blocks
- 1 1/4 yards of purple print for blocks and binding
- Gold and brown prints
- 4 yards of backing, twin-size batting, matching thread, basting pins, and basic sewing supplies
- A walking foot and quarter-inch seam foot; a free-motion foot set is optional
This is the material list for that specific 58-inch square project, not a general yardage formula for purple quilts. Other patterns may use different fabric counts, precuts, sizes, or construction methods.
Check the instructions before buying
Pattern formats and access can differ: The Violet Quilt is described as available in PDF and paper formats and with coloring pages and sew-along support, while the American Patchwork & Quilting collection serves as a project-discovery roundup. Because that roundup was updated in 2021, do not assume every linked pattern remains free or available. Confirm the selected pattern’s current instructions, edition, finished size, and complete supplies list before purchasing fabric.
