Peggy Dembicer’s mixed-media practice grew from textile arts into paper weaving, intricate beadwork and sculpture. In a September 2018 interview, she described how crochet, needlepoint and macramé led her to weaving—and how she later brought paper, beads, paint and found materials into the work. Her official website places her in Weston, Connecticut, and provides a current point of entry to her portfolio and demonstrations.
How Peggy Dembicer’s practice developed
Dembicer told Boston Voyager in September 2018 that her early explorations of fiber art included crochet, needlepoint and macramé, which she taught herself as a college student and young adult. She began weaving in the early 1980s, first concentrating on complex pattern weaving and tapestry.
From there, she tested what weaving could do with materials beyond conventional yarn, including commercial and specialty papers. In the 1990s, she added bead weaving and expanded into larger, more complex designs, seed-bead mosaics, bead embroidery and three-dimensional peyote beadwork. In that 2018 interview, she described her work at the time as focused largely on complex beaded pieces or woven-paper construction; that account should not be read as a claim about her exact studio priorities today.

Dembicer’s work brings textile thinking to a broad mix of materials. Her official website describes combinations of weaving, gluing, embroidery, stitching, paint, fabric and polymers. Across her site and her Saatchi Art profile, the described materials also include beads, specialty and commercial papers, novelty yarns, oil and acrylic paints, and found or miscellaneous objects. The processes named across those sources include collage, wrapping, knotting and crochet, alongside weaving and beadwork. These are methods in her broader practice, not a claim that every piece uses every technique.

Her portfolio categories—bead work, paper weaving, mixed media, sculpture, painting, polymer, tapestry and video—show how widely the work ranges in form and material. A flat woven construction and a three-dimensional beaded or sculptural piece can share a concern with pattern and assembly while relying on different processes.
Why paper and found materials matter
Paper extends weaving beyond thread: strips or other paper elements can be interlaced into patterned surfaces and constructed forms. Dembicer’s official site identifies specialty papers as a recurring material and says she looks for creative possibilities in ordinary things. Its examples include brochures and rusty metal fragments.

Reuse is not merely a list of unusual supplies in the artist’s description; it connects everyday discarded matter to the act of constructing an artwork. Popular culture, geometric patterns and reinterpretations of artists she admires are also identified as sources for her designs in the interview and Saatchi profile. This combination of pattern, reference and reclaimed material gives the work routes between textile tradition and contemporary mixed media.
What “bead weaving” means in her work
Bead weaving is one strand of Dembicer’s practice, not a synonym for all of it. Her 2018 account describes a progression from bead-weaving skills to larger designs, seed-bead mosaics, bead embroidery and three-dimensional peyote beadwork. Together, those forms show how small beads can be assembled into patterned surfaces or built into dimensional structures. The sources describe her artistic practice; they do not specify a recommended bead size, brand or beginner kit.
