Pencil2D is free, open-source software for making traditional frame-by-frame 2D animations. It supports both raster (bitmap) and vector drawing, and is designed around a canvas, timeline, layers and keyframes. The official download page lists version 0.7.2 as the current stable release, with builds for Windows, macOS and Linux.
What Pencil2D is—and what it is designed to do
Pencil2D is a desktop drawing and animation application focused on traditional, hand-drawn 2D work. You create drawings on individual frames, arrange those frames in a timeline, and play them back as an animation. The project describes support for both bitmap and vector graphics, so artists can choose a raster or vector workflow within the same application.
Its deliberately minimal interface is intended to make the drawing-and-animation process approachable. It is not a general-purpose painting package with animation as a secondary feature: the timeline and frame sequence are central to how Pencil2D works. Is Pencil2D free, and can you use it commercially?
Yes. Pencil2D is free and open source. Its official site says it is free to use, including for commercial work, and the project repository identifies the software as GPL-2.0 licensed. Pencil2D repository
“Free” here means the application does not require a purchase to use; it does not imply that every asset, sound or other material you add to an animation is free of rights restrictions. Check the licensing terms for those materials separately.

What version is current, and where does Pencil2D run?
The official download page lists Pencil2D v0.7.2 as the current stable version; that page was last updated on 13 March 2026. Its listed desktop downloads cover Windows 7 and later, macOS 10.14 and later for Intel, and 32-bit and 64-bit Linux. Other installation options include Arch Linux, Debian/Ubuntu, Fedora 26+, Flatpak, FreeBSD and Homebrew. Check the download page for the package that matches your operating system. The Pencil2D Team’s release announcement, dated 26 March 2026, describes v0.7.2 as a stability-and-polish update with 18 bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements. The download page also offers nightly and legacy builds. Legacy versions may be missing current security fixes and may have limited support, so use one only if you have a specific compatibility reason.
How the Pencil2D workspace is organized
The basic workspace has four parts that matter when you are starting an animation:

- Canvas: The central area where you draw. Pencil2D’s canvas is infinite, but a bright camera rectangle marks the area used as the animation’s preview when exporting.
- Timeline: The frame-based workspace for navigating and arranging the animation’s keyframes.
- Layers: Separate tracks for organizing artwork. The menus include commands for adding layers.
- Tool and settings panels: Dockable panels for drawing tools, colors and related settings.

- Start a project and choose a drawing approach. Use raster tools for bitmap artwork or vector tools for vector shapes. Pencil2D supports both; the best choice depends on the look and editing approach you want.
- Draw the first pose on the canvas. Keep the important parts of the drawing inside the bright camera rectangle if they need to appear in the exported animation.
- Add and navigate frames in the timeline. Place later poses on keyframes, using layers to keep parts of the artwork organized. Build the movement by changing the drawing from frame to frame.
- Play back and refine the sequence. Check the motion, adjust drawings or timing, and repeat until the movement reads as intended.
- Export when ready. The manual documents the camera area as the exported preview region, and the FAQ documents the dedicated File > Export > Animated GIF… command. For other formats and exact options, check the export dialogs in the version you installed. Pencil2D FAQ
Do you need a drawing tablet?
No. A drawing tablet is optional, not a stated Pencil2D requirement. You can make drawings with whatever input method your computer supports. A pen tablet can be a more natural way to draw by hand, especially for longer sessions, but Pencil2D’s official materials do not endorse a particular device. Check that any tablet you consider supports your operating system and preferred drawing setup.

Who is Pencil2D a good fit for?
Pencil2D is worth considering if you want a free desktop application centered on frame-by-frame, hand-drawn 2D animation and need both raster and vector workflows. Its timeline, layers and dockable drawing panels provide a straightforward starting point for building a sequence from individual drawings.
If you are choosing among animation programs, compare the specific features that affect your work: frame and keyframe handling, raster and vector tools, onion-skin support and learning curve, export formats, operating-system compatibility, release stability, licensing and the availability of documentation and community support. The facts here establish Pencil2D’s workflow and supported platforms, but do not establish that it is better than other animation tools across those measures.
