A people silhouette is a person or group shown mainly as a solid shape against a lighter background, so the outer contour—not facial detail—does most of the work of identifying the figure. You can make one as a cut-paper portrait, a backlit photograph, or a digital graphic; the right approach depends on whether you want a likeness, an artistic image, or a clear design symbol.
What is a people silhouette?
A people silhouette reduces a person to a filled shape defined by its edge. In a photograph, the subject is typically backlit and rendered dark against a brighter scene. A side-facing profile is traditional, but silhouettes can also show a full figure, a pose, or a group.
A silhouette is not simply an outline: an outline traces the boundary while leaving the interior open or detailed, whereas a silhouette usually fills the subject into a single mass. The simplified form can make a pose or profile immediately legible, but it can also make similar figures harder to distinguish.
How were silhouette portraits made?
Silhouette portraits became popular in the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries, before photography was common. The Smithsonian American Art Museum explains that they were accurate, inexpensive, quick to make, and easy to send to a friend or relative. Earlier names included “shades,” “profiles,” and “shadow pictures.” Scholars believe the name became associated with French finance minister Etienne de Silhouette because affordable goods were labeled in reference to his cost-cutting; this is a proposed explanation, not a certain etymology.

The museum identifies three traditional methods:
- Painted: The profile was painted, often in a simple monochrome treatment.
- Cut-and-pasted: The sitter’s profile was cut from black paper and pasted onto a light background.
- Hollow-cut: A profile was cut from light paper, leaving an opening that was placed over a dark background.
The earliest known mention of a silhouette in America cited by the museum is a 1769 letter from Harriott Pinckney. In Philadelphia, Charles Willson Peale’s museum installed a physiognotrace in 1802, a device used to trace a sitter’s profile. Moses Williams operated it for visitors. The museum reports that more than 8,500 silhouettes were cut in the device’s first year. As photography became more common in the mid-19th century, silhouettes lost popularity as a portrait format, although artists continued to use them in decorative and contemporary work. How to make a paper silhouette portrait
For a classic cut-and-pasted portrait, you need black paper, a light-colored backing sheet, scissors, and a clear side-profile reference. A simple profile works best when its edge captures identifying features such as the forehead, nose, lips, chin, neck, and hairstyle.

- Choose a clear profile. Place the sitter against a plain background and look straight at the side of the head. Keep the head still so the contour is easy to follow.
- Trace the contour. Draw or trace the profile onto black paper. Include distinctive hair, glasses, or a hat only if they help identify the sitter.
- Cut carefully. Cut along the contour with scissors. For small interior details, simplify rather than adding fragile slits that may tear.
- Mount the shape. Paste the black cutout onto light paper, or reverse the materials to make a hollow-cut portrait with a light cutout over a dark ground.
The result is a portrait made from the edge of the subject rather than internal shading or facial features.

How to make a silhouette photo of a person
A photographic silhouette depends on contrast: put the person in front of a bright background such as the sky or a studio light, then expose for that bright area so the subject remains dark. Photographer Dawndra Budd puts it simply: “You want to expose your camera for the sky.” Adobe’s silhouette photography guide discusses this approach.

- Position the subject. Place the person between the camera and a bright background. A distinct profile or recognizable pose helps the shape read clearly.
- Expose for the background. Automatic exposure may try to brighten shadowed areas, lifting detail in the person and weakening the silhouette. Use exposure compensation or manual exposure as needed; the appropriate setting depends on the light, camera, and how much background detail you want.
- Check the outline and background. Look for clear separation between the subject and the bright area. If the edge blends into a dark part of the scene, change the person’s position or wait for a cleaner background.
- Review the histogram. A screen preview can make dark tones look deeper or lighter than they are. Photographer Jeff Carlson advises: “It helps to look at the histogram and make sure those blacks are really black.”
- Edit only as needed. If the subject is not dark enough or the outline is murky, post-processing or combining bracketed exposures may help. Adobe discusses Lightroom and Photoshop for this kind of adjustment.
A silhouetted person can also add a sense of human scale to a landscape or landmark image while the setting remains visually dominant. It is a compositional option, not a guaranteed effect on every viewer. Silhouettes can also support dramatic images and double exposures.
Choosing between paper, photo, and digital silhouettes
| Approach | Materials and workflow | Best suited to | What the result emphasizes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cut-paper portrait | Black and light paper, scissors, tracing or drawing | A handmade keepsake or traditional profile portrait | A carefully cut contour with little or no internal detail |
| Backlit photograph | Camera or phone, bright background, exposure adjustment; editing is optional | A person in a landscape, dramatic portrait, or photographic artwork | The subject’s pose and the surrounding scene |
| Digital illustration or icon | Vector or image-editing software | Graphic design, signs, or interface communication | A simplified figure or group symbol that must be interpreted quickly |
For a digital asset, check the license for the actual image and intended use rather than assuming that a graphic found online is free to reuse. A stock or vector listing alone does not establish what uses are permitted.

Using people silhouettes in design and interfaces
A generic person or group symbol can be ambiguous: different viewers may assign different meanings to the same icon. GOV.UK Design System guidance recommends visible text labels in most cases and advises against giving one icon multiple meanings. W3C supplemental cognitive accessibility guidance says, “Each icon or symbol should convey a single meaning and be next to the content it relates to.” This is design guidance, not a claim that every icon is required by WCAG. GOV.UK recommends photography when lifelike representation matters, but not as a way to represent abstract concepts; it also advises against generic stock photography in services. Its illustration guidance favors few elements, a consistent style, and thoughtful representation. If an illustration shows people, depicting only one age, gender, or ethnicity can exclude users or reinforce stereotypes. GOV.UK Design System: Images

Give meaningful images useful alternative text
GOV.UK says images should have an alt attribute. Use an empty value when an image is decorative or its information is already conveyed by an adjacent label; for a meaningful image, describe its information, content, or function concisely without adding unsupported interpretation. Home Office guidance likewise says alternative text should describe an image’s meaning. Home Office guidance on images
Do not substitute a generic figure for the accessibility symbol
The International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA) has a standardized meaning. The U.S. Access Board says it was created through a Rehabilitation International design competition in 1968 and adopted by ISO. Under U.S. ADA and ABA standards, the ISA is required for certain designated spaces and elements; an alternative symbol must meet the applicable equivalent-facilitation provision. This is U.S. standards guidance, not worldwide legal advice. U.S. Access Board guide to signs
