The right perforated metal panel starts with the job it must perform, not with a catalog photograph. Define the required balance of visibility, privacy, airflow, daylight, solar screening, sound control, appearance, durability, and fabrication; then convert that brief into a precise pattern, material, finish, thickness, size, edge, and attachment specification. Open area is important, but it does not predict every performance result by itself.

For a dependable order, request the same written specification from suitable fabricators, inspect a production-representative sample, and have the project engineer review wind, structural, fire, corrosion, and attachment conditions. The checklist below shows how to do that without leaving critical decisions to a supplier’s default settings.

What perforated metal panels are—and what they are not

A perforated panel is sheet or plate with a repeated field of punched, pressed, or otherwise formed openings. The openings can be round, square, slotted, hexagonal, or a designer-specified shape. A panel’s visual and technical behavior comes from the complete pattern: hole geometry, hole size, center-to-center spacing, arrangement, orientation, open area, material, thickness, margins, and finish.

Architectural applications include façade screens, brise-soleil and sunshades, balcony or stair railing infill, equipment enclosures, fences and gates, ceiling or wall features, signage, grilles, and acoustic treatments. Perforations can influence weight, airflow, visibility, daylight, shading, and sound behavior, but those effects depend on the whole assembly and the project conditions.

A perforated sheet is not automatically a weatherproof façade, guardrail, acoustic absorber, or code-compliant cladding system. Exterior performance depends on support spacing, fasteners, joints, drainage, flashing, subframing, corrosion compatibility, wind pressure, fire requirements, and the backing or cavity behind the panel. Treat the panel as one component in a designed assembly.

How do I choose perforated metal panels?

Use this sequence before looking at individual products. It keeps appearance decisions from outrunning engineering and fabrication requirements.

  1. Define the application and location. State whether the panel is a façade screen, sunshade, infill, ceiling, railing, equipment enclosure, sign, fence, gate, grille, or another use. Record the building zone, interior or exterior exposure, height, access conditions, and whether people can touch, climb, or impact it.
  2. Write the performance brief. Describe the desired level of privacy or visibility from each side, airflow, daylight, solar screening, glare control, acoustic objective, and visual density. Identify whether the panel is decorative, protective, or expected to carry a load. If a target is not quantified, say so rather than allowing a supplier to infer it from a photograph.
  3. Select a pattern family. Choose round, square, slotted, hexagonal, designer, or custom openings. Then specify the hole dimensions, center-to-center spacing, arrangement, and orientation. “Small holes” and “open-looking” are not orderable descriptions.
  4. Set open area and verify it. Open area is the percentage of the panel surface occupied by openings. Check the stated percentage against the selected hole and spacing geometry; do not assume that two patterns with similar-looking holes will perform alike.
  5. Choose material and protection. Match the alloy or grade, thickness, finish, and any secondary protection to the environment, cleaning regime, fire strategy, and appearance requirements.
  6. Resolve panel geometry and fabrication. Establish width, length, sheet or plate form, quantity, solid margins, edge conditions, cutouts, folds, bends, leveling, tolerances, and fabrication sequence.
  7. Design the attachment package. Coordinate framing, rails, hat channels, angles, flat bars, U-edging, clips, fasteners, isolation materials, access, and replacement strategy with the supporting structure.
  8. Validate with evidence. Obtain a physical sample, technical sheets, drawings or CAD, finish information, and a project-specific quote. Ask the project engineer and manufacturer to review loads, supports, fire, corrosion, and attachment details.

What open area do I need?

There is no universal “correct” percentage. A higher open area generally appears lighter and more transparent; a lower open area gives more visual coverage and a more solid appearance. The useful value depends on what is behind the panel, the viewing distance and angle, lighting on each side, desired airflow, solar exposure, and whether the panel is part of an acoustic or safety assembly.

Hole size and spacing work together. Two panels can have the same open-area percentage yet look different because one uses large, widely spaced holes and the other uses small, closely spaced holes. Orientation and stagger also change the visual grain, edge behavior, and how the pattern aligns with folds, trims, and sightlines.

How a pattern is written

A clear pattern description includes hole size × center-to-center distance × orientation, followed by the open-area percentage. For example, ATAS identifies an A23 pattern as 1/4-inch holes on 1/2-inch staggered centers, producing 23% open area. The 23% means that 23% of the metal surface is removed; it is not a statement that the panel will deliver 23% airflow, shading, privacy, or sound reduction.

Manufacturer pattern examples

The following ATAS examples show why the product designation and open-area value must travel together. They are catalog examples, not universal recommendations for a particular building.

Pattern example Open area Pattern dimensions available in the cited example How to use the information
A13 40% Not stated in the cited material Confirm hole, spacing, and orientation on the current technical sheet.
A15 23% Not stated in the cited material Do not infer geometry from the percentage alone.
A23 23% 1/4-inch holes on 1/2-inch staggered centers Use the complete pattern notation when requesting a match.
A24 51% Not stated in the cited material Check transparency, edge margins, and structural effects on the actual panel.
A19 33% Not stated in the cited material Obtain the current drawing before placing an order.
A25 40% Not stated in the cited material Verify whether the supplied orientation suits the design.

Performance cautions

  • Do not convert open area directly into a guaranteed airflow rate. Pressure difference, panel depth, surrounding geometry, insect screens, backing walls, and the support frame matter.
  • Do not use open area alone to claim a solar-control value. Orientation, sun angle, glass, cavity depth, and the rest of the shading system determine results.
  • Do not promise privacy from a percentage alone. View angle, contrast, lighting, distance, and whether the observer is inside or outside can reverse the apparent screening effect.
  • Do not assume acoustic improvement. The panel may be a facing, grille, or protective layer, but absorption and transmission depend on the cavity, backing, absorber, and tested assembly.

Which material is best for exterior perforated panels?

The best material is the one that meets the exposure, structural, fire, fabrication, maintenance, and appearance requirements of the project. Common choices include carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. Ametco lists these materials for architectural products and describes uses such as acoustic wall and ceiling panels, railing infill, sun shading, fencing, gates, screens, and grilles.

ATAS states: “An aluminum substrate is recommended for all exterior perforated applications due to its inherent corrosion-resistant properties.” That is the manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal code rule. A different alloy, galvanized system, stainless grade, coating, or protected carbon-steel assembly may be appropriate after project-specific review.

Questions to resolve before selecting the substrate

  • What exposure will the panel see: sheltered interior, urban exterior, coastal salt, industrial pollutants, de-icing salts, persistent moisture, or a combination?
  • Will dissimilar metals touch? Specify isolation and fastener compatibility to reduce galvanic corrosion risk.
  • Is the panel near a pool, cooling tower, exhaust, marine atmosphere, or chemical process?
  • Does the fire strategy restrict coatings, cores, backing materials, or cavity arrangements?
  • Will the surface be cleaned from the ground, by lift, or from a maintenance walkway?
  • Is the finish decorative, color-critical, anti-graffiti, or expected to weather naturally?

Finish and color

State the finish and color as part of the purchase specification, including whether both faces are visible. ATAS describes options for matching color on both panel sides when both sides can be seen. McNICHOLS notes that inventory is typically mill finish unless another finish is specified, so “metal panel” is not a sufficient finish instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for the coating system, gloss or texture, color standard, surface preparation, touch-up method, and warranty terms that apply to the actual substrate and fabrication. Confirm whether cutting, bending, drilling, and field repairs expose uncoated edges and how those areas are to be protected.

Thickness, dimensions, margins, and fabrication

Perforation removes metal, so thickness and unsupported span must be considered together. Specify gauge or millimetres, sheet versus plate, finished panel width and length, quantity, and whether dimensions are stock or custom. The supplier should confirm tolerances, flatness, camber, and the effect of perforating before or after forming.

Solid margins and edge conditions

Solid margins are the unperforated strips at panel edges or ends. They provide room for fasteners, folds, trims, and load transfer, and they affect the visual rhythm at joints. State the required side margins, end margins, border width, and whether the pattern must be centered or aligned across adjacent panels.

Describe cutouts, notches, holes for services, returns, hems, folds, curves, leveling, and corner treatments. Identify which edges are exposed, concealed, folded, deburred, hemmed, or fitted with an angle, flat bar, or U-edging accessory. A pattern that looks correct on a flat sample can shift at a fold or terminate awkwardly at a corner if the fabrication sequence is not agreed in advance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stock versus custom

Standard round holes are commonly the most economical option. ATAS says custom shapes and variations can be supplied at additional cost and with design limitations. Ametco describes both stock products and custom fabrication. Custom work may affect tooling, minimum quantities, lead time, nesting efficiency, edge margins, and the ability to replace a damaged panel later. Ask the fabricator to identify those effects in the quote rather than treating a custom pattern as a no-cost graphic change.

Illustrative product data

Amron’s R20 T28 is one supplier-specific example: 46% open area, availability in stainless steel, mild steel, aluminum, and pre-galvanized steel, listed thicknesses of 1, 1.5, 2, 3, and 4 mm, and standard sheet sizes of 1000 × 2000 mm, 1250 × 2500 mm, and 1500 × 3000 mm. Bespoke sizing is also listed. These dimensions and options apply to that example; they should not be generalized to every perforated-metal supplier.

Exterior panels: review the whole assembly

For a façade, screen, or exterior sunshade, provide the manufacturer and engineer with the panel size, support spacing, fixing points, design wind pressures, edge zones, exposure category, and expected movement. Amron identifies material durability, finish, wind loading, fixing points, panel size, and open area as exterior-selection considerations.

Ask for calculations or documented design limits applicable to the proposed panel and support arrangement. Confirm whether the stated capacity assumes a particular span, fastener layout, margin, orientation, or framing system. A thicker sheet is not automatically a safe substitute for a redesigned support system.

Weather, drainage, and movement

  • Coordinate the screen with the primary air, water, and thermal barrier. Do not treat perforated metal alone as the weather barrier unless a tested system says otherwise.
  • Provide drainage paths and avoid trapping water behind folded edges, trims, or dissimilar-metal interfaces.
  • Allow for thermal movement in long runs and at dissimilar materials.
  • Detail corners, end caps, flashings, penetrations, and transitions to opaque cladding before fabrication.
  • Confirm whether insect mesh, bird mesh, acoustic backing, or a security layer changes the effective open area and pressure load.

Safety and code coordination

Railing infill, guards, stairs, walkways, and equipment screens can trigger requirements for opening size, climbability, impact, sharp edges, fire, fall protection, and maintenance access. The applicable rules depend on jurisdiction and occupancy. Have the responsible design professional verify them; a visually acceptable pattern is not evidence of compliance.

How to compare suppliers without choosing by appearance alone

Send identical written requirements to more than one suitable supplier. Compare the response on technical capability, not just the finish of a showroom sample.

Comparison axis What to ask for
Pattern and open area Hole shape, dimensions, centers, arrangement, orientation, calculated open area, and a drawing showing the repeat.
Material and finish Exact alloy or grade, thickness, substrate preparation, coating or finish, color, both-face treatment, and corrosion considerations.
Size and fabrication Maximum and minimum panel dimensions, tolerances, margins, cutouts, folds, flatness, edge treatment, and nesting constraints.
Stock or custom route Whether the quoted item is standard or custom, plus tooling, minimum quantity, replacement availability, and any design limitations.
Samples and data Physical sample, finish chip, technical sheet, CAD or shop drawing, and confirmation that the sample uses the proposed production substrate and finish.
Framing and attachment Angles, flat bars, U-edging, hat channels, clips, trims, flashings, fasteners, isolation, and responsibility for engineering.
Project suitability Written assumptions for wind, span, supports, exposure, fire, movement, maintenance, and coordination with the surrounding assembly.
Commercial terms Current project-specific price, delivery estimate, validity period, packaging, freight, finish warranty, and change-order rules.

No neutral ranking can replace this comparison. Suppliers may offer different patterns, tolerances, support systems, and assumptions under similar-looking names.

What information should I include in a quote request?

Use the following template in an email, specification, or procurement schedule. Attach plans or elevations showing panel orientation, joints, visible faces, and support locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Project and application: project name, location, façade or interior use, panel function, exposure, access, and the responsible design contact.
  2. Performance and appearance: visibility or privacy intent, airflow, daylight, solar screening, acoustic objective, visual density, and any safety or code criteria.
  3. Pattern: hole type; hole width and length or diameter; center-to-center spacing; straight, staggered, or reverse-staggered arrangement; orientation; repeat direction; and required open area percentage.
  4. Material: primary material and grade or alloy, environmental exposure, finish, color, sheen, both-face visibility, and secondary protection.
  5. Geometry: thickness or gauge, sheet versus plate, finished panel width and length, quantity, stock or custom dimensions, and acceptable tolerances.
  6. Margins and fabrication: solid side and end margins, centered or aligned pattern, cutouts, notches, folds, returns, bends, leveling, deburring, exposed edges, corners, and fabrication sequence.
  7. Framing and attachment: supporting structure, span, fixing points, rails, hat channels, angles, flat bars, U-edging, clips, fasteners, isolation, trims, flashings, and access for installation or replacement.
  8. Submittals: physical sample, finish sample, technical data, pattern drawing, CAD or shop drawings, structural assumptions, fire information where applicable, and installation details.
  9. Commercial request: itemized project-specific price, estimated production and delivery schedule, packaging, freight basis, quote validity, warranty, and exclusions.

McNICHOLS’ ordering guidance similarly calls for the application, percentage open area, hole type, margins and end pattern, material and finish, size, form and quantity, gauge or thickness, special requirements, hole size, center, arrangement, and any angle, flat-bar, or U-edging accessories. Including these fields reduces clarification cycles and makes supplier quotations comparable.

How much do perforated metal panels cost?

A dependable generic price cannot be stated from the available product information. The final amount depends on the metal and thickness, open-area pattern, stock or custom tooling, sheet size, quantity, nesting yield, margins, cutouts, forming, finish, edge treatment, framing, fasteners, engineering, packaging, freight, and site-specific installation.

Standard patterns and stock sizes can reduce fabrication effort and waste. Custom holes, unusual orientation, small runs, tight tolerances, color matching, two-sided finishing, formed returns, and a complete framing package can increase cost. A low sheet price may not represent the installed assembly if trims, supports, engineering, corrosion isolation, or field finishing are excluded.

Request an itemized quote against the same specification from each suitable supplier. Ask the supplier to identify assumptions, exclusions, minimum quantities, tooling charges, sample charges, delivery basis, and what changes would trigger repricing.

Samples, submittals, and approval checks

Approve a physical sample before releasing production, especially when the panel will be viewed at close range or repeated across a façade. Check the actual hole geometry, apparent transparency from both sides, pattern alignment, margin width, edge quality, coating color, gloss, texture, and the way light changes the appearance.

Confirm that the sample represents the proposed substrate, thickness, perforation process, finish, and any backing or framing that affects the view. A small sample cannot prove structural, acoustic, airflow, or solar performance, but it can expose visual and fabrication mismatches early.

Review shop drawings for panel numbering, handedness, pattern orientation, joint alignment, cutouts, fastener locations, returns, corners, and replacement access. Keep the approved pattern drawing and finish identification with the purchase order.

Common buying mistakes and their fixes

Choosing by photograph

Problem: A photograph hides scale, viewing angle, backlighting, and the difference between a sample and a full panel.

Fix: Specify the pattern numerically and inspect a representative physical sample in comparable lighting.

Specifying open area without geometry

Problem: A percentage alone does not identify hole size, spacing, stagger, orientation, or visual grain.

Fix: State hole dimensions, centers, arrangement, orientation, and percentage together.

Leaving margins to the fabricator

Problem: Unplanned margins can move the pattern at joints, weaken fastener zones, or create inconsistent borders.

  • Function: Does the panel provide the intended visual screening, airflow, daylight, shade, or enclosure role?
  • Pattern clarity: Are hole size, centers, arrangement, orientation, and open area fully documented?
  • Durability: Is the material and finish appropriate for the actual exposure and maintenance plan?
  • Fabrication: Can the supplier hold the required dimensions, margins, folds, cutouts, tolerances, and edge quality?
  • Assembly: Are framing, fasteners, trims, drainage, movement, and replacement access resolved?
  • Evidence: Are there current drawings, samples, technical data, and project-specific engineering assumptions?
  • Value: Does the quote include the complete scope, or does a low panel price exclude the parts needed to install it safely?

The preferred option is the one that satisfies the project brief with documented assumptions and a coordinated installation path—not necessarily the one with the highest open area, thinnest sheet, or lowest initial unit price.
