Photographer Balbir Singh captured a lightning bolt above the west end of Perth’s CBD from the South Perth foreshore shortly after 1am on March 30, 2025, as a storm moved over Kings Park. The image came after he had been preparing to wrap up his shoot.
Where was the Perth lightning photo taken?
Singh was photographing from the South Perth foreshore when the storm moved across Kings Park. The resulting image showed a lightning bolt over the west end of the CBD. PerthNow reported that he had been ready to finish shortly after 1am when the opportunity arose.

Singh described the shot as an “ideal opportunity” that came from waiting for the right moment. The report does not identify his camera, lens, exposure settings, use of a tripod or specific photographic technique.
What was happening in Perth during the storm?
PerthNow reported that thunder and dry lightning swept across Perth early on Sunday, March 30, 2025. A Bureau of Meteorology spokeswoman attributed the storms to a mid-level trough moving over south-west Western Australia. She said the storms began over Perth at about 10pm on Saturday night and continued through the night.

How much rain did Perth receive?
The Bureau spokeswoman said rainfall associated with the storms was generally under 5mm across the metropolitan area, with Perth Metro recording 3.4mm, according to PerthNow’s March 30, 2025 report.
The report also said Perth had received 15.4mm across March at that point, compared with an average of 19mm. That is a snapshot reported in March 2025, not a current rainfall total or evidence of a longer-term climate trend.
