A vividly painted, three-dimensional mural uncovered at Huaca Yolanda in northern Peru may be 3,000–4,000 years old. Its two-sided relief shows fish-like figures, net-like forms, stars and plant-like shapes, but its precise age and the meaning of its imagery are not yet settled: the latest official update, published February 8, 2026, said radiocarbon dating was still planned.
Where the mural was found
The mural was exposed on July 7, 2025, at Huaca Yolanda, in the Tanguche area of Chao district, La Libertad, on Peru’s northern coast. It lies in the atrium of a U-shaped temple within an archaeological zone reported to cover more than 20 hectares. The excavation is being conducted by the Early Ecodynamics Archaeological Program for the Chao and Santa valleys (PRAET), led by archaeologist Ana Cecilia Mauricio of the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. Agencia Andina reported the discovery and site context in July 2025.
What the painted relief shows
This is not simply a painted flat wall: the decoration is polychrome and modeled in relief, with imagery visible on both faces. Descriptions from the excavation and subsequent reporting include fish-like figures, a fish whose body is shaped like a three-dimensional fishing net, stars, and forms that may depict plants or tubers. Some accounts also describe mythological or humanoid figures, but the identification of individual motifs remains tentative. The Guardian’s September 2025 report and WIRED en Español’s coverage describe the imagery and its possible significance.

Reported colors include blue and yellow, as well as red and black in later coverage. The February 2026 official update noted multiple paint layers. The pigments have not yet been fully identified or sourced, so the available reporting does not establish which materials produced the colors or where they came from. Diario Oficial El Peruano said pigment-origin analysis remained planned.

How old is the Huaca Yolanda mural?
The 3,000–4,000-year age is an estimate based on stylistic and architectural context, not a radiocarbon-confirmed date. In July 2025, Andina reported that organic material recovered at the site would be submitted for radiocarbon analysis, alongside plans for pigment study and 3D modeling. El Peruano’s February 8, 2026 update still described radiocarbon dating as planned. The exact age therefore remains unresolved in the latest official reporting cited here.
How much of the mural has been uncovered?
The reported measurements reflect different stages of excavation, not a confirmed final size. Andina described roughly four meters of exposed length and 1.5 meters of exposed height in July 2025, while noting that the full wall had not been revealed. By February 2026, El Peruano reported that six meters had been excavated and that the mural’s total extent was still unknown. Those figures describe what had been exposed or excavated at those points; neither establishes the mural’s complete dimensions.

What might the imagery mean?
Mauricio interprets the temple setting and combination of marine, agricultural and celestial motifs as evidence of a worldview linking life by the sea and on land with the cosmos. She has also discussed early signs of social hierarchy and the knowledge held by leaders. In an interview with The Guardian, she said, “They were, in a sense, scientists as well as spiritual and religious leaders,” and described knowledge of medicinal plants and astronomy, including observing stars and the sun to anticipate weather.

Fish, stars and raised, painted forms are described features; the precise symbolism, ritual use and identity of the community that created them have not been established in the cited coverage. The find is discussed in the broad context of Peru’s Formative Period, but the reporting does not assign it to a named culture.

Why the site needs protection
Huaca Yolanda faces pressure from agricultural expansion and heavy machinery, urban growth and looting. Mauricio has called for action by cultural and local authorities. El Peruano reported in February 2026 that funding was needed to continue excavation and study and to strengthen preservation. The mural’s exposure makes documentation and conservation important while researchers work to establish its date, materials and full extent.
