Sean Dorrance Kelly’s claim is philosophical, not a proven technical rule: an AI may generate a visually compelling image, a polished composition or another impressive artifact, yet that output alone does not make the system a human-like creative agent. In a February 21, 2019 report, Futurism presents Kelly’s argument that what we call human creativity depends on people valuing, caring for and socially embedding creative work.
What “AI can never create true art” means
The headline summarizes Kelly’s position, rather than stating an established consensus among philosophers, artists or computer scientists. His argument separates two questions that are often collapsed:
- Can a machine produce an accomplished artifact?
- Does producing that artifact amount to human creativity or autonomous creative agency?
According to Futurism’s account, Kelly allows that artificial intelligence could generate something as technically impressive as “a well-executed Bach cantata” or “a brilliant Go strategy.” His objection is that accomplishment, by itself, does not settle whether the machine has created in the human sense.

An impressive artifact is not automatically a creator
A painting can be judged by its color, composition, technique and emotional effect. Those properties belong to the artifact. Kelly’s reported point is that human creativity involves more than the properties visible or audible in the finished work. It also involves the kind of being who made it, what that maker was trying to do and how the work participates in a human world.

That distinction matters for AI-generated painting. A model can produce an image that viewers find original or moving without having a personal stake in the image, a life history to express or an independent reason for making it. On Kelly’s account, calling the image “creative” in the same sense as a person’s work risks treating the output as proof of an agency that has not been established.
Creativity as something people value and care about
Futurism quotes Kelly saying: “Creativity is one of the defining features of human beings. But this kind of creativity depends upon our valuing it, and caring for it, as such.” The claim is not that viewers’ reactions are irrelevant to art. Rather, human valuation and care are part of what gives creative achievement its meaning.
A person may spend years developing a visual language, respond to other artists, address a community or risk rejection by presenting a painting. Those relationships help explain why the work matters. An image generated without such a biography can still matter to people, but Kelly’s argument questions whether the machine itself should receive the credit for that meaning.

Is an AI image really art?
There is no single uncontested definition of “true art.” The answer changes depending on what a viewer treats as essential.

| What does the machine contribute? | A generative process capable of producing a novel-looking result. | A tool or system whose operation does not by itself demonstrate understanding, concern or creative purpose. |
These are competing criteria, not experimentally settled findings. Kelly argues for the second emphasis. Other viewers may reasonably place more weight on the finished work and its reception without accepting his conclusion that machine creativity is impossible.
Why social embeddedness matters
Kelly is reported as writing: “Human creative achievement, because of the way it is socially embedded, will not succumb to advances in artificial intelligence.” Social embeddedness means that creative work exists within relationships among makers, audiences, traditions, institutions and shared practices.

For a painter, that can include learning from earlier images, responding to a commission, addressing a political moment, choosing materials for a reason and accepting responsibility for what is shown. A generated image can enter those same social networks when a person selects it, edits it, titles it, exhibits it or uses it in a larger project. The question then shifts from “Did the software make art?” to “Which human practices and decisions make this work an artistic achievement, and whose achievement is it?”

Kelly’s warning is partly about language. If a system’s output is automatically described as the system’s creativity, people may overlook the human labor surrounding it: writing prompts, curating iterations, supplying training material, editing results, setting goals and deciding what deserves attention. Conversely, refusing to call any AI-assisted work art would ignore the ways artists can incorporate new tools into intentional, socially meaningful practices.

- Intention: Who decided what the work should communicate or explore?
- Selection: Who rejected alternatives and chose this particular image?
- Transformation: What human changes, edits or compositional decisions shaped the final piece?
- Accountability: Who can explain and defend the work’s subject, context and effects?
- Reception: How are viewers, galleries or communities interpreting and valuing it?
This checklist does not prove that a work is or is not art. It identifies the human and institutional conditions that Kelly considers central to creative achievement.

Futurism identifies Kelly as a Harvard philosophy professor and reports that his essay appeared in MIT Technology Review. The report supports the attributed statements and its summary of his thesis. It does not establish that every philosopher agrees, provide a scientific test for consciousness or creativity, or demonstrate that AI systems can never develop capabilities that would change the debate.

It should still be read as his philosophical judgment. Whether an AI can possess intentions, care about a work or participate in a community as an author remains a conceptual and cultural question, not one resolved by the existence of a striking image.

How to judge AI-assisted painting without a false either-or
For viewers and painters, the most useful approach is to describe the work and its authorship precisely. “AI-generated” may mean an untouched model output, while “AI-assisted” may refer to a painting in which a person sketches, prompts, edits, composites and finishes the image. Those processes raise different artistic and ethical questions.
You can admire an image’s formal success while withholding the claim that the software itself is a creative person. You can also credit a human artist for meaningful choices without pretending that the machine played no role. That middle position accepts Kelly’s distinction between output and agency while leaving room for art practices built around new tools.
