Photopea is a browser-based image editor that can open Photoshop PSD files and GIMP XCF files, along with many other image formats. You can edit a file in the browser, keep an editable copy as a PSD, or export a flattened image such as PNG or JPG. The official site says Photopea runs locally and files stay on your device during its standard workflow; no download is required.
What Photopea can open
Photopea handles both raster and vector graphics. Its official homepage lists common formats including PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP, WebP, SVG, PDF, AI, AVIF, HEIC, TIFF, MP4, CDR, EPS, INDD and Figma. The project repository also lists formats such as XCF, Sketch, XD, FIG, Krita (KRI), Clip Studio Paint (CLIP), Affinity Photo (AFPHOTO), and numerous camera RAW formats.

Support for a format means Photopea can open and edit it; it does not necessarily mean Photopea can save the finished project back in that same format. The repository lists animated GIF, APNG, MP4, WEBM and MKV support, with frames brought in as layers and export back to GIF or MP4 available.
Open a file without accidentally placing it in another document
- Go to File > Open and choose a file from the standard file dialog.
- Alternatively, drag a file into the workspace when no document is open, or copy an image and press Ctrl + V to paste it from the clipboard.
- If a document is already open, drop a file on the document canvas to add it as a Smart Object layer. To open it as a separate document instead, drop it on the top bar where the document tabs appear.
Photopea also has an experimental camera-import option at File > Take a picture. These open and save behaviors are documented in Photopea’s opening and saving guide.

PSD and XCF: what happens to your editable project
PSD is Photopea’s primary editable project format. The official site lists PSD as supported for both opening and saving. When you open a non-PSD file, Photopea converts it into a PSD-style document internally; that makes it possible to work with it in the editor, but does not add layers or editable elements that the original file never contained.
Working with a Photoshop file
Open the PSD, make your changes, then choose File > Save as PSD to keep the editable document structure. Use this when you may need to revisit layers, text, masks or other editable components later.

Working with a GIMP file
Photopea lists GIMP’s XCF format as one it can open. Its documented project-save command is File > Save as PSD, while other output formats are produced through export. XCF opening therefore should not be mistaken for a promise that Photopea saves the edited project back to XCF.
Working with a PNG or JPG
A flat PNG or JPG opens as an image layer; it does not regain the separate layers, text or masks that may have existed in an earlier project before the image was flattened. In the Layers panel on the right, select a layer by clicking its name or thumbnail. The panel’s eye icon toggles visibility, and the controls at its top set the selected layer’s blend mode and opacity. Drag layers to reorder them or place them in folders. Photopea’s Layers guide explains the panel controls.

Save an editable copy or export an image

The current documented label is Export As, not simply “Export.” It opens the Save for Web window, where you can choose the format and output resolution. To resize as you export a JPG, open the image, choose File > Export As > JPG, enter the new size in the export window, then click Save. Photopea’s opening and saving guide describes these commands.
Exporting to PNG or JPG turns text and other editable elements into pixels, making them harder to change later. Keep a PSD project copy before exporting if you will need to edit those elements again.

Why File > Save may not download a new file
File > Save is not a universal “download a copy” command. Depending on how the document was opened and the browser’s capabilities, it may replace a local original or save back to a source such as Google Drive. For a normal local editing session where you want a downloadable editable project, use File > Save as PSD; for a final image, use File > Export As.
Privacy and browser-based use
Photopea says its standard editor runs locally on your device and that files are not uploaded. That is the product’s stated architecture for ordinary use, rather than an independent guarantee about every browser, device or workflow. Embedded Photopea integrations can behave differently: its API documentation describes files supplied from a server, save behavior tied to the integration, and an option that can disable local save and export commands. If you are using Photopea inside another service, check that service’s workflow and settings rather than assuming it behaves exactly like the standalone site.
When Photopea is a practical choice
- Use it to open or make changes to PSD or XCF files without installing a desktop editor.
- Use Save as PSD when preserving an editable project matters.
- Use Export As when you need a format such as PNG or JPG for sharing or publishing.
- Do not expect a flattened image to recover the original project’s layers, or XCF support to mean XCF saving.
The official Learn page is marked 2013–2026 and does not state a conventional product version number, so the menu paths above follow the currently documented labels rather than a numbered release.
