Photopea is a capable free browser editor for painting, illustration and layered image work—especially when you need to open or edit a PSD without installing software. It offers many of the layer, mask, path and brush-based tools digital artists expect, and ordinary editing is processed on your device according to Photopea’s privacy policy. It is not a guaranteed replacement for Photoshop: complex files, large canvases, browser performance and the ad-supported interface can all matter in a real art workflow.
What Photopea is—and who it suits
Photopea is a browser-based editor for raster and vector graphics. Artists can use it for painting and illustration, photo manipulation, compositing, graphics and mockups. It is accessible on computers, tablets and phones, but detailed painting is much more comfortable with a large display and accurate input such as a mouse, stylus or pen tablet, plus a keyboard for shortcuts. Photopea’s learning materials describe workflows from basic image edits to illustrations and other design work.
For a painter, its main attraction is the combination of no installation and a familiar layer-based workflow. It can be a practical option on a school Chromebook, a shared computer or a device where you cannot install a desktop application. It is less suited to artists who need a dependable, long-session desktop environment, extensive plugin support or assured fidelity with complex Photoshop documents.

Is Photopea free, and what does Premium change?
You can use Photopea without paying, but the free experience is ad-supported. Ads take up attention and screen space, which can be especially awkward on a small display or during a client-facing session. Photopea’s privacy policy describes Premium as a one-time purchase covering a selected period; it does not establish a current price, so check the live account or checkout screen rather than relying on older price references. Premium is most relevant if you already like the editor and want an ad-free experience, not if you need desktop-only capabilities.

Photopea also offers AI-related features, but availability and usage limits can depend on the feature and account, and some workflows can use third-party services. Do not assume every AI operation is unlimited or processed locally. The documented Photopea API is free to use, though Photopea warns it is still developing and may contain critical bugs; that is useful to developers considering an integration, not a guarantee of production support.

Photopea includes a substantial professional-style toolbox rather than only a few paint and crop controls. Its official feature information describes layers, masks, smart objects, adjustment layers, channels, paths, filters, vector graphics and RAW processing. Photopea can open brushes, gradients, fonts and other resources, but imported resources do not make it identical to a desktop painting application. If a specific brush engine, tablet behavior or production feature is essential to your practice, try that exact workflow on your device before adopting it.

PSD is Photopea’s main working format, and the editor can open and save PSD files. That makes it more useful for exchanging layered art with Photoshop users than a tool that only imports and exports flat images. Photopea also opens many other formats, including AI, INDD, XCF, Sketch, XD, FIG, KRA, CDR, EPS and PDF; its homepage lists common formats such as PNG, JPG, GIF, SVG, AVIF, HEIC, TIFF and others. The official format list and Photopea repository document format support, but support means a file can be handled—not that every feature will render or remain editable exactly as in its original application.

In a painting workflow, preserve a PSD master if you need editable layers, text, masks and effects. Exporting to PNG or JPG is for sharing or delivery; it can flatten the composition and discard editing structure. Before relying on a PSD handoff, check the document itself: fonts and text metrics, layer styles, adjustment behavior, smart objects, linked assets, color appearance and newer Photoshop-specific features can vary.
Open and save an editable file
- Go to Photopea, then choose File → Open and select a local file. You can also drag a file into the editor or paste an image from the clipboard.
- Make your edits, then choose File → Save as PSD to retain an editable working file.
- For a finished image, choose File → Export As, select a format such as PNG or JPG, set the available output options and save the export separately.
For a client or collaborator who will continue editing in Photoshop, test a representative project by opening it in Photopea, making a small change, saving as PSD and reopening it in Photoshop. Verify the specific layers and effects that matter; the file extension alone cannot establish round-trip compatibility. Photopea’s opening and saving guide explains its file workflow.

Privacy, cloud storage and offline use
Photopea’s privacy policy says files opened for ordinary editing are processed on the device and do not leave it. That is a meaningful privacy advantage for local painting and image work, but it is not a promise of zero network activity: loading the service, advertising, account features and integrations may involve network requests. Login and payment account information is stored on Photopea’s servers.
Cloud storage is optional. Photopea documents connections to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and Peadrive; using one means authorizing access and transferring files between your device and the selected provider. For sensitive work, use local files on a device you control and avoid optional services unless they fit your security requirements. Browser extensions, malware and a compromised or shared device remain risks regardless of where the editor processes an image.

Photopea says the editor can continue working after its page has loaded and the device disconnects from the internet. That does not mean every workflow is offline-ready: the initial page must load, and cloud storage, online resources and some AI functions may need a connection. Most importantly, local processing is not automatic backup. Photopea warns that unsaved work may be lost if you close it without saving.
Performance and usability for artists
A browser editor still depends on the computer’s hardware. Performance can vary with the browser, processor, graphics hardware, available memory, canvas dimensions, layer count and filters. Smaller or moderate projects are a more sensible fit than very large, complex compositions; there is no universal file-size limit established here. Large PSDs can stress browser memory, slow operations or fail during saving, and a mobile device may struggle sooner than a capable desktop or laptop.
Photopea is approachable for people who already understand Photoshop-style concepts, but it is not a simplified beginner painting app. Layers, masks, paths, channels, adjustment layers and smart objects have a learning curve. Its tutorial library helps newcomers, while the professional-style interface may feel dense at first. Phone and tablet access is convenient for quick edits, but precision work is easier with a larger screen, accurate pointing input and keyboard.

What works in Photopea’s favor

- Its layers, masks, vector features and PSD workflow make it more capable than a basic crop-and-filter editor.
- Ordinary editing is described by Photopea as local processing, and the editor can continue after loading without an internet connection.
- It handles a wide range of graphics formats, making it useful for mixed-file workflows.
Where it is a weaker fit
- Free access includes advertising, which can reduce usable space and focus.
- Large files and long sessions depend on browser and device resources, with no desktop-native workflow for users who need one.
- Complex PSDs may open with altered, missing or approximated elements; opening successfully is not proof of fidelity.
- Unsaved browser work can be lost, so the tab should not be treated as the only copy of a painting.
- It does not provide the same broader team ecosystem, enterprise administration or professional support expectations as Adobe’s mature offering.
Who should use Photopea?
- Students and educators: A strong option for classroom devices and school projects when installation is unavailable; save finished work to a location you control.
- Digital painters and illustrators: Useful for moderate painting, paintovers, compositing, mockups and PSD adjustments, especially when browser access matters more than a specialized desktop workflow.
- Freelancers and small businesses: Practical for occasional edits and review of layered files, provided you validate the exact client PSDs before depending on it for delivery.
- Photoshop-dependent artists and teams: Keep Photoshop or a tested desktop alternative for complex production files, plugins, automation, support and workflows where document fidelity is critical.
