These Photoshop CS6 tutorials take you from opening an image to making controlled edits, retouching, compositing, and exporting. Each lesson uses the legacy CS6 interface: use Adobe’s Photoshop CS6 Reference to check version-specific controls rather than assuming instructions for today’s Photoshop apply unchanged.
Before you start: open a document and find the essential panels
Begin with a copy of an image you are allowed to edit. In Photoshop CS6, open it with File > Open. Save a working copy with File > Save As so the original remains untouched. Save an editable version as a Photoshop document (.psd) while you work.

Learn the workspace
The document window displays the image. The Tools panel contains selection, painting, and retouching tools; the Options bar changes to show settings for the active tool. Keep the Layers panel visible through Window > Layers. The CS6 reference documents the historical workspace and controls; use it if a panel or label differs from what you expect.
Exercise: inspect before editing
- Open a photo with File > Open.
- Save a working copy with File > Save As and choose Photoshop format.
- Show the Layers panel using Window > Layers.
- Zoom in and out to inspect details, then return to a view that shows the whole image.
You should see the image’s existing layer or background in the Layers panel and a separate PSD working file. Keep that editable file for the following lessons.
How to use layers in Photoshop CS6
Layers let you keep parts of a composition separate, so you can reposition or adjust one element without repainting the others. Adobe describes layers as individual composition elements and groups as a way to organize related content in its layers and layer groups guide. For exact CS6 panel actions, follow the archived CS6 reference.
Create and organize a layer
- In the Layers panel, select the layer you want to build on.
- Create a new layer with the panel’s Create a new layer control, or use the layer-creation command documented in the CS6 reference.
- Use the Move tool to reposition content on the selected layer. Confirm the correct layer is active before moving or painting.
- Rename layers descriptively in the Layers panel, such as “foreground” or “color adjustment,” so you can identify them later.
Understand layer order
Layers higher in the panel appear in front of layers below them. Drag a layer up or down in the Layers panel to change the stacking order. Toggle a layer’s visibility to compare the image with and without that element. If a change seems to affect the wrong object, check which layer is selected before continuing.

Exercise: build a simple two-layer composition
Place a second image or painted element on its own layer above the background. Move it into position, then toggle its visibility off and on. The result should be an element you can move or hide without changing the underlying image.
Make a selection without changing the rest of the image
A selection limits where many edits apply. Photoshop CS6 includes selection tools for defining an area; the best choice depends on the shape and contrast of the subject. Make a selection, inspect its boundary, and only then apply a change.
Selection workflow
- Choose a selection tool from the Tools panel, such as a marquee for a geometric area or a lasso for a less regular outline.
- Use the tool’s Options bar to set the relevant options before drawing.
- Drag or trace around the area you want to edit.
- Zoom in and check the selection edge. Refine or redraw it if it includes unwanted pixels.
- Apply a small test edit, then undo if the affected area is not right.
- When finished, deselect using Select > Deselect.
Exercise: brighten one part of a photo
Make a selection around a small subject, then apply a modest tonal adjustment. Check that the adjustment changes the selected area rather than the entire image. Deselect and inspect the edge at a closer zoom; an obvious hard boundary is a sign that the selection needs refinement.
How to use layer masks in Photoshop CS6
A layer mask controls which parts of a layer show without deleting the hidden pixels. White on a mask reveals the layer, black hides it, and gray creates partial visibility. These core principles also appear in Adobe’s current layer-mask guide; use the CS6 reference for the corresponding historical interface steps.

Create a mask from a selection
- In the Layers panel, select the layer whose visibility you want to control.
- Make a selection around the part to keep visible.
- Click the Add Layer Mask control at the bottom of the Layers panel. The selection becomes the visible portion of the layer, with the surrounding area masked.
- Click the mask thumbnail—not the image thumbnail—to edit the mask.
Refine a mask with a brush
- Select the mask thumbnail in the Layers panel.
- Choose the Brush tool and set a suitable brush size and softness in the Options bar.
- Paint with black to hide more of the layer, white to reveal it, or gray for partial visibility.
- Switch between black and white as needed and inspect the edge at close zoom.
If brush strokes alter the image itself, you likely selected the image thumbnail instead of the mask thumbnail. Undo the stroke, select the mask, and try again. Because the mask preserves the underlying pixels, you can revise the reveal and hide areas later.
Exercise: blend an object into a background
Put an object on a layer above a background, add a mask, and paint on the mask to hide unwanted edges. Toggle the layer’s visibility to compare the composite with the background alone. Look for halos or abrupt cutoffs around the object and refine the mask where they appear.
Adjust color and tone without flattening your work
For edits you may want to revise, use an adjustment layer rather than permanently changing the image pixels. In the Layers panel, use the adjustment-layer control and choose an adjustment appropriate to the change you want. The available choices and their labels are version-specific; consult the CS6 reference rather than following current-version screenshots blindly.
Exercise: make a restrained tonal correction
- Select the layer that should sit below the adjustment, or select the relevant layer group if your document uses groups.
- Create an adjustment layer from the Layers panel.
- Move the adjustment controls gradually while watching the image.
- Toggle the adjustment layer’s visibility to compare the result with the unadjusted image.
Keep the adjustment if it improves the image without obscuring important detail. If it affects more of the composition than intended, use a selection-derived mask or paint on its mask to limit where it applies.

Retouch small distractions on a separate layer
Before using a retouching tool, duplicate the image layer or create a separate empty layer when the chosen tool and its CS6 options support sampling from other layers. This keeps the original pixels available. CS6 tool names and sampling controls should be checked against the archived reference.
Exercise: remove a small spot
- Zoom in on a small blemish or dust spot.
- Duplicate the image layer, or create a retouching layer if the tool’s sampling option allows it.
- Choose an appropriate spot or healing tool and inspect the Options bar for sampling settings.
- Apply one small click or stroke at a time, sampling from nearby clean texture where the tool permits.
- Toggle the retouching layer to compare the edited and original areas.
Retouching can look convincing at high zoom but unnatural at normal viewing size. Check both views, and undo or reduce the correction if texture or edges become conspicuous.
Combine images into a simple composite
A basic composite brings together separate image elements on separate layers. The practical sequence is to place or copy an element into the working document, position it, and use a mask to blend its edges. Keep each component editable until the composition is ready to export.
Composite workflow
- Open the source image for the element and the background document.
- Copy and paste the element into the background document, or use the placement workflow documented in the CS6 reference.
- Confirm the pasted element appears on its own layer in the Layers panel.
- Use the Move tool to position and, where appropriate, transform the element.
- Add a layer mask and refine its edges with a brush.
- Adjust the element’s color or tone so it sits naturally against the background.
Inspect the composite at both full-image and close-up scales. Look for mismatched brightness, color, scale, or edge softness; correct those on the relevant layer or mask instead of flattening prematurely.

Save an editable file and export a finished image
Keep the PSD as your editable master, including its layers and masks. For a shareable or web-ready copy, use File > Save As and select an appropriate format supported by your CS6 installation, such as JPEG for a flattened photograph. Preserve the PSD separately so exported changes do not replace the layered working document.
Final inspection checklist
- Check the composition at whole-image scale and at close zoom.
- Toggle important layers and masks to confirm they contribute as intended.
- Look for selection edges, mask halos, missed retouching marks, and accidental edits.
- Save the layered PSD, then save a separate copy in the delivery format you need.
What to know about Photoshop CS6 support and installers
Photoshop CS6 is legacy software. Adobe’s support policy lists June 1, 2014 as the end date for Creative Suite 6 product support and says CS6 feature releases, updates, and new versions are discontinued. The policy notes limited legacy Gold Support exceptions; it is not a promise of ordinary current technical support or fixes. See Adobe’s supported product versions policy.
Adobe says registered or purchased Creative Suite 5.5/6 users may be able to download installers through their account, but access is conditional. Check Adobe’s Creative Suite archive FAQ; do not assume a download will be available for every account or computer.
Adobe’s current supported Photoshop versions page covers current and prior releases, not CS6 instruction steps. Current help can clarify an enduring idea such as masks, but interface details and available features may differ from CS6. For version-specific tutorials, anchor the workflow in the archived manual.
