Adobe’s Photoshop app for iPhone is free to download and includes a useful set of editing tools—but it does not make the full desktop version of Photoshop free. Adobe introduced the app on February 25, 2025, for mobile-first creation and quick edits; the current features and availability can vary by App Store region. Adobe describes it as complementary to desktop Photoshop, not a replacement.

What “Photoshop for free” means on iPhone
The free iPhone app gives you mobile image-editing and design tools without buying a desktop Photoshop subscription. At launch, Adobe listed selections, layers and masks, removal and recoloring tools, Spot Healing, and Firefly-powered Generative Fill and Generative Expand among its free capabilities. Those are launch-era feature details, not a guarantee that every tool remains free or available in every region: check the current US App Store listing for the latest feature description and updates, and your local App Store for regional availability.
Adobe’s mobile product page distinguishes the free app from a premium subscription. In practical terms, start with the free app if you want to edit on your phone; check the current in-app offer and your Adobe plan if you need a specific premium tool or access to Photoshop on the web.

How the iPhone app differs from desktop Photoshop
The iPhone app is built around a touch-based, mobile workflow: making selections, retouching, adjusting colors, working with layers, or trying generative edits while away from a computer. Desktop Photoshop is the fuller workspace for detailed, precision-heavy projects. Adobe explicitly says the mobile app “is not intended to replace Photoshop on the desktop,” particularly for people who rely on desktop tools and precision. That is Adobe’s product positioning, not an independent performance comparison.
Adobe’s launch announcement framed the phone app as a way to create and make lightweight edits on mobile, with work that can complement desktop Photoshop. If a project depends on a full desktop workspace, treat the phone app as a companion rather than a free substitute.

When you need a paid plan
Adobe’s launch materials said its Photoshop Mobile and Web plan added premium mobile tools and Photoshop on the web. At launch, Adobe quoted US prices of US$7.99 per month or US$69.99 per year for that plan; those February 2025 figures are dated and should not be treated as current prices. The plan’s present price and terms may vary by region, so verify them on Adobe’s current offer before subscribing.
Adobe’s launch announcement also said existing paid Photoshop subscribers were included in mobile and web access. Because inclusion depends on the current plan and region, check your own subscription details rather than assuming that every Photoshop membership includes the same access today.

Desktop Photoshop is still a subscription
On Adobe’s currently accessed US pricing page, standalone desktop Photoshop is subscription-only. Adobe lists US$22.99 per month with annual billing paid monthly, or US$263.88 per year prepaid, and offers a seven-day free trial. The trial automatically converts to a paid membership unless you cancel. Prices and terms can change, and these figures apply to the US page, not every country. Which option should you choose?
- Choose the free iPhone app if you want to edit images on your phone and the free tools meet your needs.
- Check the mobile premium offer if you need a paid mobile feature or Photoshop on the web; confirm the current price, regional terms, and subscription eligibility first.
- Choose desktop Photoshop if you need its full workspace and precision. The iPhone app does not remove the desktop subscription requirement.
Availability and current features
Adobe’s Help hub links to mobile feature comparisons and technical requirements, but the hub page itself does not establish exact supported iPhone models or iOS version thresholds. Check Adobe Photoshop Mobile Help and the requirements it links to before installing if compatibility is uncertain. The US App Store listing records later app releases and feature updates, so its current description is more useful than launch coverage for checking what the app offers now.
