Adobe launched a standalone Photoshop app for iPhone on February 25, 2025. It is free to download, includes a useful free tier, and brings layers, masks, selections, compositing, retouching and Firefly-powered generative tools to a phone. It is genuine mobile Photoshop—but not the complete desktop application in a smaller window.
What Adobe actually launched
The iPhone app is a dedicated Photoshop experience, available worldwide through the Apple App Store at launch. Adobe also offers Photoshop on the web, Photoshop on iPad and the full desktop application. They share an ecosystem, but their interfaces, performance and feature entitlements differ. This is different from Photoshop Express, which focuses on quick corrections, filters, collages and social-ready edits. Lightroom Mobile is primarily a photography, cataloging and color-correction tool, while Express is a fast design-and-edit utility. The new Photoshop app is aimed at people who need Photoshop concepts—layers, masks, selections and compositing—without opening a computer.

What you can do without paying
The free tier is capable enough for many short projects. Adobe lists these mobile workflows among the app’s launch features:

Adobe’s current product page also advertises background replacement, distraction removal and an AI Assistant beta that accepts typed or spoken instructions. Availability and allowances can vary by account, plan, app version and region.
What a subscription adds
Adobe announced a Photoshop Mobile and Web plan at $7.99 per month or $69.99 per year on February 25, 2025. Those are launch-era figures, not a guaranteed current price; check the live in-app offer before subscribing. The plan was described as including Photoshop on the web, Photoshop on iPad and additional mobile capabilities.

Adobe’s current comparison page lists many selection, retouching, color, AI, drawing, text and layer features, but does not establish every free-versus-paid entitlement. Check the current app or Adobe’s feature comparison for the tool you need.

Generative Fill
Select an area, describe what should be added or replaced, and Firefly generates alternatives. It is useful for changing a background, inserting an object or extending a scene, but results can contain warped details, incorrect text, mismatched lighting or implausible perspective.

Generative Expand
Extend the canvas beyond the original image and generate content around its edges. This is convenient for different social aspect ratios, though seams and repeated patterns may require manual cleanup.
Generate Similar, Reference Image and Harmonize
Generate Similar creates variations from an existing result. Reference Image guides generation with a visual example. Harmonize blends an inserted element into its surroundings by matching appearance. These tools may be premium or subject to changing allowances.
AI Assistant beta
Adobe’s current Photoshop page describes an AI Assistant beta on web and mobile that accepts typed or spoken edit requests. Adobe says it is not currently available in desktop Photoshop. Treat it as an accelerator, not an automatic substitute for selections, masks and manual corrections.
Responsible-AI claims
Adobe says Firefly is trained on content it has permission to use, including licensed Adobe Stock and public-domain material, and that Content Credentials can be attached to Firefly-generated content. Those are Adobe’s stated policies, not an independent guarantee about every workflow. Review Adobe’s terms and privacy information before using cloud-connected generative features.

Is it really free?
Yes, the app is free to install and has a free tier. No, it is not an unrestricted free replacement for desktop Photoshop. Premium tools, expanded AI access and web or iPad use may require a subscription. Existing Photoshop subscribers may already have mobile, web and iPad access under their plan; verify the terms attached to your Adobe ID. Country, tax, billing channel, promotions and account status can change the displayed price.
iPhone requirements and availability
- iPhone: a device capable of running iOS 18 or later.
- Account: an Adobe account is needed for Adobe services and subscription entitlements.
- Connectivity: cloud-based files and generative features may require an internet connection.
- Languages: Adobe lists English, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Czech, Russian, Turkish, Hungarian and Ukrainian, among others.
See Adobe’s live technical requirements before installing. Adobe currently lists Photoshop on Android as well; its requirements page identifies the Android version as beta and specifies Android 11 or later with at least 6 GB of RAM.
How it fits an Adobe workflow
Start with an image from Photos, Files, Lightroom, Adobe Stock or the camera. A project can then move among Photoshop mobile, Photoshop on the web, Photoshop on iPad and desktop Photoshop, depending on your plan and the document’s complexity. Adobe positions its paid Mobile and Web plan for Photoshop-document workflows across mobile and web, but that does not mean every desktop tool, effect or document behaves identically on an iPhone.

The brand name describes the application and workflow, not guaranteed professional output. Results depend on source resolution, selection accuracy, touch precision, AI output, export settings and whether the final work is completed on a larger device.

Who should download it?
Good fit
- Creators making social posts, thumbnails, collages and simple promotional graphics.
- Users who need layers, masks or compositing away from a computer.
- Adobe subscribers continuing a project between desktop sessions.
- People experimenting with background changes, object replacement and generative expansion.
Look elsewhere first
- Photographers who mainly need cataloging, raw processing and color correction: try Lightroom Mobile.
- Users who want fast filters, automatic enhancements or collages: try Photoshop Express or Apple Photos.
- Template-driven flyers and social graphics: consider Adobe Express.
- Color-critical production, complex typography, huge PSDs or high-volume retouching: use desktop Photoshop or a larger pen-enabled device.
- Anyone seeking a completely free editor with no account or subscription prompts.
Common problems and fixes
An AI result looks wrong
- Undo or preserve the original before experimenting.
- Make a smaller, more precise selection.
- Use a simpler prompt describing the object and its placement.
- Generate several variations.
- Finish with masking, healing, cloning or color adjustments.
A premium tool is unavailable
Sign in with the Adobe ID tied to the subscription, check renewal status and update the app. Restart it and restore purchases if offered. The feature may be paid, allowance-limited, region-limited or available only on web or iPad. Adobe’s mobile help hub is the appropriate place to confirm current entitlements.
The app will not install or performs poorly
Confirm iOS 18 or later, available storage, Photos and Files permissions, network access and document size. Large, heavily layered files can exceed what is comfortable on a phone even when they technically open.
Bottom line
Photoshop on iPhone is a real, useful mobile Photoshop—not “all of desktop Photoshop for free.” Download it at no cost if you need layers, masks, compositing or AI-assisted edits on the go. Pay for the Mobile and Web plan only when its premium tools or cross-device access solve a real need; choose Lightroom, Express or desktop Photoshop when your workflow is primarily photography correction, template design or complex professional production.
