There is no defensible current basis for saying that only one of these tools passed five tests. The original comparison’s “DALL-E 3” label is now potentially outdated: OpenAI’s current image-generation documentation identifies gpt-image-2 as its state-of-the-art image model. Photoshop, meanwhile, is primarily a professional editor with generative tools, while Midjourney is a dedicated visual-generation platform.
That makes this less a contest between three identical generators and more a comparison of three different creative workflows. Midjourney is generally the natural choice for visual ideation; Photoshop is strongest when editing and production control matter; OpenAI image generation is attractive for conversational instruction and iterative editing. A genuine overall winner requires a dated, reproducible retest.

The headline “Only one AI image generator passed my five tests” should be treated as a historical test claim, not a current fact. Without the original prompts, model versions, settings, outputs, and scoring rules, the result cannot be reproduced responsibly.

For a current buying decision, use this practical verdict:
- Choose Photoshop when you are editing an existing photograph or design, need layers and masks, or must deliver a production-ready composite.
- Choose Midjourney when visual polish, mood, composition, and rapid creative exploration matter most.
- Choose OpenAI image generation when natural-language instruction, multimodal conversation, and straightforward image editing are central to the workflow.
Those are workflow winners, not proof that one raw image model is universally superior.
OpenAI’s current image documentation centers on gpt-image-2, so a modern article should not casually call the current product “DALL-E 3.” Use “DALL-E 3” only for an explicitly historical test of that model.
Why the comparison is not like-for-like

Photoshop can generate content, but its advantage may come from selection tools, layers, masks, and manual corrections rather than from a single underlying image model. Its current Contextual Task Bar can expose Adobe models such as Firefly Image 5 and partner models including Gemini and FLUX variants. The selected model must therefore be recorded in any fair test. What a fair five-test comparison must publish
A result such as “one tool passed” is meaningful only if readers can see exactly what passed means. Record all of the following:
- The five prompts, reproduced verbatim.
- The product, model, interface, release channel, and version used.
- The subscription tier, country, date, image dimensions, aspect ratio, and relevant settings.
- Whether prompts were identical or tuned separately for each tool.
- The number of generations per prompt, and whether the first result or best result was scored.
- Whether reference images, image-to-image generation, inpainting, upscaling, manual editing, or post-processing were allowed.
- Whether evaluation was blind or whether the judge knew which tool produced each image.
- Every pass criterion, failed output, and weighting.
- Any content-filter refusal or unavailable feature.
Without this information, the comparison is an anecdotal gallery rather than a reproducible benchmark.

The five tests that matter
1. Prompt fidelity
Test multiple objects, relationships, colors, actions, and spatial constraints. For example: “A red bicycle leaning against the left side of a yellow café, with a black cat under the table.”

Score each requirement separately. Is the bicycle red? Is it on the left? Is the café yellow? Is the cat under the table? A beautiful image that puts the requested objects in the wrong places should not receive a full pass.
2. Photorealism
Use a demanding scene involving people, hands, lighting, reflections, depth, and surface texture. Inspect the output at 100% zoom, not only as a small thumbnail. Look for distorted fingers, unnatural eyes, repeated details, impossible reflections, plastic-looking skin, and inconsistent shadows.
Visual impact and photographic plausibility are different scores. Midjourney may produce an immediately striking image, but the test should separately assess whether the physical details hold together.
3. Legible text and layout
Use a poster, product label, menu, sign, or social graphic containing exact words. Transcribe every spelling error rather than describing the text as “mostly readable.” Also score hierarchy, alignment, spacing, and whether the result is usable at the intended size.

4. Controlled editing
Start with an existing image and ask each product to remove an object, replace a background, change clothing color, expand the canvas, or preserve a person while changing the surroundings.
This is where Photoshop deserves a fair evaluation. In Photoshop’s Generative Fill workflow, you open or create an image, select the area to change, choose Generative Fill from the Contextual Task Bar, enter a prompt or leave it blank to fill from surrounding pixels, select Generate, and review variations in the Properties panel. Preserve the result on its own layer where applicable. Adobe notes that exact controls can vary between desktop releases, beta builds, and web or mobile versions.
5. Consistency and iteration
Create a character, product, or scene, then make three controlled changes while preserving identity, camera angle, lighting, clothing, or style. State which attributes must remain fixed.
“Consistent” is too vague on its own. A tool may preserve a character’s face but change the camera angle, or preserve composition while altering the product. Score each requirement across every iteration.
A defensible scoring model
One reasonable weighting is:

But the weighting changes the winner. An artist may give greater weight to mood and visual quality. A marketer may prioritize typography, brand consistency, and editability. A photographer may emphasize masking, retouching, compositing, and preservation of unaffected details. A beginner may value ease, speed, and predictable results.
Publish both category scores and the weighted total. A single overall ranking hides the assumptions that produced it.

How each tool fits a real workflow
Photoshop: best when the image is only part of the job
Photoshop is the strongest fit when you already have a photograph, design, or composite and need precise changes. Layers, selections, masks, retouching, canvas expansion, and manual adjustments matter more than the attractiveness of a first generated image.

Photoshop is a poor fit if you only want occasional prompt-to-image generation and do not need a full editing application.
Midjourney: best for visual direction
Midjourney is designed around rapid visual exploration. Comparative coverage commonly describes it as strong in visual polish, mood, cinematic composition, and artistic impact, though those are comparative judgments rather than permanent benchmark results. It is a natural fit for concept artists, illustrators, creative directors, mood boards, and anyone exploring many visual directions quickly. It is less suitable when you need native layers, exact typography, pixel-level retouching, or a predictable product replica.

Verify Midjourney’s current model, web and Discord requirements, subscription tiers, fast and relaxed usage rules, private-generation options, reference controls, commercial terms, and editing features on its account page and documentation. A commonly quoted entry price should not be treated as verified without checking the live account page.

OpenAI image generation: best for conversational iteration
OpenAI’s image tools can generate and edit from text and image inputs. The exact result depends on whether you are testing ChatGPT’s consumer interface or an API model, so the article must identify that choice. The current developer guide identifies gpt-image-2 as the state-of-the-art image-generation model.
ChatGPT is attractive for beginners and teams that want to describe an image, inspect it, revise it, and continue the conversation in one place. The current ChatGPT pricing page describes image-generation access and limits that vary by plan. Free access, paid-plan limits, speed, and availability can change.
Do not present current ChatGPT image generation as DALL-E 3 unless the tested product explicitly used DALL-E 3. A historical DALL-E 3 test and a current GPT Image test are different comparisons.

- Photographers: Photoshop, especially for masking, retouching, object removal, compositing, and controlled changes to real images.
- Concept artists: Midjourney for fast exploration of mood, style, composition, and visual direction.
- Marketers: Photoshop or OpenAI image generation depending on whether brand layout and editability or conversational speed matter more. Text-heavy designs deserve a dedicated typography test.
- Beginners: OpenAI image generation for the simplest conversational workflow; Photoshop if you also need a complete editor.
- Existing Adobe subscribers: Photoshop may have the lowest workflow friction because generation and finishing happen in the same application.
- Developers: OpenAI’s API is the relevant comparison, not necessarily the ChatGPT interface.
Commercial and legal considerations
“Commercially usable” is not the same as “free from legal risk.” Review the provider’s current terms, regional rules, source assets, trademarks, likeness rights, copyright issues, privacy settings, and public-gallery policies. Keep records of prompts, source images, model names, generated versions, and manual edits.
Also include the total workflow cost: subscription or API charges, credits, GPU time, Photoshop access, storage, retries, and the time needed to correct errors. A cheaper first generation can become more expensive if it requires extensive cleanup.
What a proper retest should publish
A transparent update should include the five original prompts if they can be recovered, plus:
- A dated test box with geography, plans, interfaces, and model versions.
- First-result and best-of-four scores.
- Separate generator and editor scores.
- The complete pass/fail rubric.
- Failed generations and filter refusals.
- Output resolution, aspect ratio, and settings.
- Alternative rankings for artists, marketers, photographers, and beginners.
- Links to current provider documentation and terms.
If the original prompts and outputs cannot be recovered, do not recreate the historical result from memory or borrow another publication’s conclusion. Publish a new, dated test instead.

Conclusion
The useful answer is not that one tool has permanently beaten the other two. Photoshop, Midjourney, and OpenAI image generation solve different parts of image creation. Midjourney is the clearest choice for visual ideation, Photoshop for controlled production editing, and OpenAI for conversational generation and iteration. A claim that “only one passed” is valid only for a fully documented test with a defined date, model, rubric, and weighting.
