Adobe’s “biggest AI update yet” is not one universal desktop release. It is a 2026 rollout spread across Photoshop for desktop, Photoshop beta, Photoshop on the web and mobile, and Firefly. To try the latest stable tools, update Photoshop in the Creative Cloud desktop app. For the conversational AI Assistant, check Photoshop public beta and the web or mobile experience, where availability can differ.
The rollout adds partner AI models, reference images, improved object removal, Harmonize, Generative Upscale, and expanded generation tools alongside the headline AI Assistant. Here is what each feature does, where to find it, and what its credit, hardware, and beta limitations mean.
What Adobe actually released
Adobe’s March 10 and June 18, 2026 announcements describe a substantial expansion of Photoshop’s AI workflow. But the features do not all belong to the same build or app surface. Some are part of current desktop Photoshop releases; AI Assistant is a public beta; and other capabilities appear in Photoshop on the web, mobile, or Firefly.

- Type a description to create all-new images and backgrounds or add anything to your photos with the power of generative AI.
- Count on AI and automation to easily erase distractions, replace backgrounds, touch up faces, and change colors in photos or quickly trim and adjust video footage.
- Edit and enhance 360° and VR videos and create stop-motion movies.
- Get up and running fast and keep growing your skills with Quick, Guided, and Advanced editing modes.
- Enhance your pics with eGects, text, graphics, and animation, and amp up the action in your videos with eGects, transitions, expressive text, motion titles, music, animations, and color grading presets.
Adobe’s documentation also currently shows inconsistent version references: one release-notes page identifies desktop Photoshop 2026 as version 27.0 and Photoshop 2025 version 26.11.1 as the long-term-support release, while an Adobe community announcement refers to Photoshop 27.8 as the June update. The practical answer is to use Creative Cloud’s updater rather than hunt for one version number.

Adobe’s desktop “What’s new” page, Generative AI overview, and June announcement are the best places to check the current rollout.
AI Assistant: the headline feature
AI Assistant lets you describe an editing goal in ordinary language. Adobe says it can remove distractions, change backgrounds, adjust lighting, alter color, apply edits automatically, or guide you through the steps instead.
That makes it different from typing a prompt into Generative Fill: the assistant is intended to interpret a broader, multi-step workflow. For example, you might ask:
- “Remove the people in the background and reconstruct the pavement.”
- “Warm the sunset light on the subject but keep the sky unchanged.”
- “Replace the background with a clean studio wall and preserve the product edges.”
- “Show me how to brighten the face without changing skin texture.”
In Photoshop on the web, AI Markup lets you draw over the part of the image you want to change before describing the edit. Adobe’s March announcement also says voice requests are supported in the Photoshop app.
Important: AI Assistant is a public beta, not a finished feature available in every desktop Photoshop installation. Start with Photoshop beta or the web/mobile experience where Adobe exposes it, and expect availability and behavior to change. See Adobe’s March Photoshop and Firefly announcement for the current product context.
The model picker changes how Photoshop AI works
One of the most consequential changes is the ability to choose among Adobe and partner models inside familiar Photoshop generation workflows. Adobe’s current documentation lists:
- Firefly Image 5
- Firefly Fill & Expand
- Firefly Image 1
- Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2
- Gemini 3 with Nano Banana Pro
- Gemini 2.5 with Nano Banana
- FLUX.2 pro
- FLUX.1 Kontext [pro]
This list is documented by Adobe, not a guarantee that every account sees every model. The available choices can depend on the product surface, feature, region, account, rollout status, and model terms.

Use Adobe Firefly models as the natural starting point when you want an integrated Adobe workflow and Adobe’s Firefly commercial-safety positioning. Try partner models when their prompt interpretation, photorealism, object design, or style adherence better suits the image. There is no universally best model: compare results on the same selection and prompt.
Before generating, inspect whether a model is marked premium and check its credit cost. Partner models may have different availability, controls, terms, and usage requirements. Adobe’s Generative Fill documentation and Generate Image documentation show the model-selection workflow.

How to try the main generation tools
Generative Fill
Generative Fill is the quickest way to add, remove, or replace a defined part of an image.
- Open an image with File > Open.
- Make a selection with a selection tool such as the Selection Brush.
- Choose Generative Fill in the Contextual Task Bar.
- Select an Adobe or partner model.
- Enter a prompt, or leave it blank for a contextual fill based on surrounding pixels.
- Choose Generate.
- Review the variations in the Properties panel.
Select slightly beyond an unwanted object when removing it. When adding something, include enough surrounding area for Photoshop to understand the scale, perspective, and lighting. Begin with a short prompt such as “wooden stool” or “red ceramic vase,” then add material, position, camera angle, or light only if necessary. Generate several variations before rewriting the prompt.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Generative Fill is non-destructive: Photoshop places results in generated content that you can review and revise.
Generate Image
Generate Image creates a new visual from a text description without leaving Photoshop.
- Open or create a document.
- Select Generate Image.
- Enter a descriptive prompt in the Contextual Task Bar.
- Choose an AI model.
- Optionally add a reference image or adjust style settings.
- Select Generate and review the variations.
- Place the preferred result into the document.
Use it when you need a starting visual, product concept, texture, scene element, or compositional direction. It is less predictable than building every element manually, so treat the result as editable source material rather than a final design.
Reference images
Reference images help guide the appearance of generated objects or styles. Adobe’s latest desktop information says multiple references can be used with partner models such as Flux and Gemini. This is useful for product mockups, repeated characters, branded objects, and compositions where a generic prompt is not enough to preserve visual identity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReference images improve consistency, but they do not guarantee exact reproduction of a logo, product, face, or character. Check edges, proportions, lettering, and distinctive details manually.
Generative Expand
Generative Expand extends the canvas and creates content beyond the original image boundaries. It is useful when reframing a photograph for a different aspect ratio, such as turning a landscape crop into a wider banner.
Inspect the generated area carefully around architecture, text, hands, horizon lines, and repeated patterns. The tool generates plausible continuation; it does not know what was factually outside the camera frame.
Generate Background
Generate Background is designed specifically to replace a dull, cluttered, or unsuitable background with a generated scene tailored to the subject. It is a background-replacement workflow, not simply a blank text-to-image canvas.
Isolate the subject cleanly first, then describe the environment, surface, lighting, and perspective you want. Product edges, hair, glass, reflective surfaces, and contact shadows usually need inspection and manual refinement.

Adobe’s steps are documented under Generate Background.
Generate Similar
Generate Similar creates additional variations from an existing generated result. It is useful when the composition is close but the object shape, pose, color, or arrangement is not quite right. It lets you iterate without starting again from an unrelated prompt.
Use it after finding a promising direction, then finish the chosen variation with masks, retouching, typography, and conventional Photoshop tools. See Adobe’s Generate Similar guide.
Cleanup, compositing, and enlargement
Improved Remove Tool
The updated Remove Tool is intended for unwanted objects, people, wires, and general distractions. Adobe says the current desktop release includes an on-device AI model, alongside cloud processing where available.
- Select the Remove Tool.
- Paint over the object, person, wire, or distraction.
- Use distraction-detection options if they appear in your build.
- Review the result at 100% magnification.
The local model may need to be downloaded first. Photoshop checks hardware compatibility automatically, and the tool can expose controls to download, cancel, remove, or switch between local and cloud processing.
On-device Remove can help with privacy, restricted networks, or some offline situations. It does not mean that Generative Fill, Generate Image, partner models, or the entire Photoshop AI suite works offline. Adobe’s desktop release notes cover the local-model details.
Harmonize
Harmonize adjusts a placed subject’s color, lighting, shadows, and tone so it better fits a background. It is valuable for composites, product scenes, posters, and quick mockups.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the background image.
- Choose File > Place Embedded to place the subject above it.
- Make sure the subject is on a pixel layer.
- Remove the original background if needed with Remove Background in the Contextual Task Bar.
- Position and scale the subject.
- Select Harmonize in the Contextual Task Bar.
- Choose the variation that best matches the scene.
Harmonize does not work on Smart Objects, text layers, or adjustment layers. Rasterize or otherwise prepare a suitable pixel layer when appropriate, while retaining an untouched source layer. The result is not a substitute for correct masking, perspective, light direction, or contact shadows. Hair, transparent objects, glass, and reflective materials may still require manual work.
See Adobe’s Harmonize instructions.
Generative Upscale
Generative Upscale is designed to enlarge a low-resolution image while improving apparent sharpness and detail. Adobe’s desktop material identifies Topaz Labs technology as part of the feature.
- Open the low-resolution image.
- Duplicate the original layer first.
- Open Generative Upscale from the relevant image-enhancement workflow.
- Choose the enlargement level and options available in your build.
- Compare the result with the original at 100% zoom.
- Retouch or mask generated artifacts while keeping the original available for comparison.
Upscale does not recover authentic missing detail. It generates an enhanced interpretation and can invent texture, facial features, lettering, or object details. Compare faces, logos, small text, and fine patterns especially carefully. Adobe’s Generative Upscale guide explains the workflow.
How to get the right Photoshop build
- Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.
- Go to Photoshop’s app listing.
- Select Update if an update is available.
- For beta features, open Beta apps and install or update Photoshop beta.
- Relaunch Photoshop after updating.
If a tool is still absent, verify the document, selection, and layer type. Then check whether the feature is desktop-only, beta-only, or documented for Photoshop on the web or mobile. Sign out of Creative Cloud and sign back in, check the Generative Credit Usage panel, and confirm that an organization or school administrator has not restricted generative AI.
Photoshop on the web is available at photoshop.adobe.com. The exact controls and rollout can differ from desktop Photoshop.
Credits, plans, and what “free” means
Adobe’s generative credits are an account-level usage system shared across relevant Adobe products, including Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, and Firefly.
- Most standard generations use one credit per generation, although some operations require more.
- Creative Cloud Pro and Firefly plans provide unlimited access to standard generations according to Adobe’s credit documentation.
- Premium features and models can consume credits based on the model, output, and file size.
- Credits reset monthly and do not roll over.
- Your balance is available in the account area or Photoshop’s Generative Credit Usage panel.
- Adobe says extra credits are not charged automatically; buying more requires a separate purchase.
“Unlimited standard generations” is not the same as unlimited access to every premium model or feature. Inspect the selected model and any premium indicator before generating. Adobe’s current details are in its Generative Credits help page.
Photoshop is sold through Adobe subscription plans, with access and generative limits depending on the plan. Adobe’s live Creative Cloud plans page is the appropriate place to check the current US price and included allowance.
Adobe’s March announcement said free Photoshop web/mobile users could begin with 20 free generations, while paid subscribers temporarily received unlimited generations through April 9, 2026. That promotion has ended and should not be treated as a current offer.

Photoshop, Firefly, or an alternative?
Choose Photoshop when you need layers, masks, compositing, professional retouching, and AI edits that remain part of a larger editable document. It is the strongest fit for photographers, designers, painters, marketers, and ecommerce creators who need control after generation.
Choose Creative Cloud Pro only when you also need multiple Adobe applications such as Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, or Lightroom. Its standard-generation allowance can be attractive, but it is poor value for someone who only wants occasional AI photo edits.
Choose Firefly when prompt-based generation, image editing, exploration, and broader AI workflows matter more than Photoshop’s detailed layered interface. Firefly is available at firefly.adobe.com, with plans at Adobe’s Firefly plans page.

Common problems and fixes
The tool is missing
- Update Photoshop through Creative Cloud.
- Check Photoshop beta.
- Try Photoshop on the web if Adobe documents the feature there.
- Sign out and back into Creative Cloud.
- Check your generative-credit balance.
- Confirm that your account, region, or organization has access.
- Check whether the document or layer type is incompatible.
- Try Adobe’s default Firefly model before a partner model.
Generative Fill adds unwanted content
Redraw the selection, leave the prompt blank for a removal task, or describe the desired object’s size, material, position, and lighting. Try another model and several variations. Finish with masks, Clone Stamp, Healing Brush, or manual painting.
Harmonize looks wrong
Confirm that the subject is isolated, on a pixel layer, and scaled with plausible perspective. Check the background’s light direction and use manual masks for hair, glass, transparency, or reflections.
Generative Upscale looks overprocessed
Compare at 100% zoom, keep the original layer, use a lower enlargement level if available, and mask out distorted faces, lettering, logos, or fine textures. Apply conventional sharpening selectively afterward.
Credits disappear faster than expected
A generation may produce multiple variations while still counting according to the feature and model rules. Premium operations can cost more than standard generations, and credits are tied to your Adobe ID across relevant products. They reset monthly and do not roll over.
Commercial and legal cautions
Do not assume every Photoshop output is automatically safe for every commercial use. Adobe positions Firefly around commercial safety, but partner models may have different licensing terms. Review the model-specific terms before client or commercial work.
Generative editing can also raise separate concerns involving trademarks, recognizable people, copyrighted characters, imitation of living artists, client disclosure requirements, and Content Credentials. For a definitive licensing decision, consult Adobe’s current model and legal documentation and the terms attached to the model you selected.
Verdict
This is a substantial Photoshop AI rollout, particularly for the model picker, reference images, compositing tools, improved Remove, and on-device cleanup. AI Assistant is the most headline-friendly addition, but it remains a public beta and is not a finished, universally available replacement for Photoshop expertise.
The fastest way to try the stable desktop features is to update through Creative Cloud, then check Photoshop beta and Photoshop on the web or mobile for beta-only and conversational tools. Treat generated pixels as editable material: compare variations, inspect at 100%, preserve the original, and finish important work with conventional Photoshop techniques.
