Physna said its Thangs 3D-model community surpassed 20 million monthly active users in 2024, up from roughly one million about a year earlier. GamesBeat reported the milestone on July 12, 2024, attributing the figures to Physna and CEO Paul Powers.
That is a significant claim—but it is still a company-reported audience figure, not an independently audited or currently verified user count. The available reporting does not establish that Thangs still has exactly, or at least, 20 million monthly active users in August 2026.

What Thangs is—and what it is not
Thangs is Physna’s consumer-facing platform for discovering, sharing, collaborating on, selling, and subscribing to 3D models. It launched in August 2020 as a free 3D-model search and collaboration engine, according to Physna’s 2021 financing announcement.
Physna is the company behind the platform and its geometric-search technology. Its broader business targets engineering, manufacturing, procurement, government, and other enterprise users that need to search and compare parts, assemblies, and proprietary 3D data.

Those distinctions matter. “20 million monthly active users” does not necessarily mean 20 million registered accounts, paying subscribers, creators, downloaders, or unique people who uploaded original work. It refers to users active during a month, but the available report does not disclose the measurement methodology.
What the 20-million figure means
According to GamesBeat’s report, Physna said Thangs had exceeded 20 million monthly active users. The same report said the platform had grown from approximately one million users about a year earlier and had added roughly four million users in the month before the interview.
Moving from one million to 20 million represents roughly 20 times the earlier level—about 1,900% growth—but that calculation should not be read as an audited, smooth month-by-month growth curve. Both the starting point and the milestone were company-provided figures.
What remains unverified
- No independent audit of the 20 million monthly active-user claim is disclosed in the available coverage.
- The measurement period, geographic breakdown, deduplication method, and treatment of anonymous visitors are not explained.
- There is no verified August 2026 audience figure in the supplied evidence.
- The number does not reveal how many users are creators, subscribers, paying customers, or repeat downloaders.
Why geometric search is important
Most online search depends on text: a model’s title, description, tags, or surrounding metadata. Image search adds visual similarity, but it can still struggle when a 3D object is shown from a different angle, rendered differently, or represented by an unhelpful thumbnail.
Geometric search attempts to compare the underlying shape and spatial relationships of the object itself. In practical terms, someone looking for a bracket, figurine, replacement part, or assembly might find similar models even when they have different names, tags, camera angles, or file formats.
Physna has described technology that codifies 3D models into data representing their geometry and relationships. GamesBeat reported that the system can normalize, classify, compare, and tag models based on geometric and spatial properties.

The distinction is more meaningful for 3D assets than for ordinary images. A part can be visually similar without being interchangeable, while two useful alternatives can look different because of scale, rendering, orientation, or surrounding components. Geometry-aware search may help surface candidates that conventional keyword search misses—but the result still requires human inspection, particularly for parts that must fit, bear loads, or meet engineering specifications.
The creator proposition
Thangs’ creator pitch combines visibility, community, monetization, and rights-management tools. Creators can upload and showcase models, build a following, sell models, and offer subscriptions. GamesBeat described a subscription model comparable to Patreon, in which fans could access creator models for use or 3D printing under the applicable terms and licenses.
Physna also positioned geometric search as a way to help creators’ work become discoverable when metadata is weak. That could be valuable in a large catalog: a model does not depend entirely on whether its uploader chose the same vocabulary a prospective user typed into a search box.
The company additionally described tools intended to identify unauthorized use of creator intellectual property. That should not be interpreted as a guarantee of enforcement, successful takedowns, or legal protection. Creators remain responsible for copyright, trademark, likeness, and licensing issues, and platform detection cannot determine every ownership dispute.
GamesBeat reported that some designers were earning more than $500,000 annually and that others were tracking toward $1 million, citing Powers. Those are attributed examples, not typical creator outcomes or platform-wide averages. A large audience can increase potential reach without guaranteeing meaningful traffic or income for an individual artist.
Licensing matters more than discoverability
A model being searchable is not the same as a model being downloadable, commercially usable, or owned by the platform. Thangs may surface indexed content without being the original creator, rights holder, or licensor.

Before downloading, printing, modifying, or selling anything, check:
- The creator and original source.
- The exact license attached to that model or collection.
- Whether commercial printing or resale is permitted.
- Whether attribution is required.
- Whether derivatives and remixes are allowed.
- Whether the file is suitable for the intended printer, material, scale, and mechanical load.
Do not assume that a subscription grants unrestricted commercial rights or that a model can be redistributed simply because it is visible in a search result.

How Physna says it makes money
The reported business model has both consumer and enterprise components:
- Subscriptions to creators.
- Transactions involving 3D models.
- Platform fees on sales.
- Enterprise software built around geometric search and comparison.
- Contracts with large companies and government customers.
GamesBeat reported historical figures of approximately 12% to 14% kept by Physna on transactions and approximately 50% of certain subscription fees. Those rates came from the 2024 report and should not be treated as current platform terms without confirmation.
Nor does a large monthly audience automatically translate into equivalent revenue. Revenue depends on conversion, purchasing frequency, subscription retention, creator payouts, platform costs, enterprise contracts, and the quality and rights status of the catalog.
How large was the catalog?
GamesBeat reported that Thangs had approximately 22 million 3D objects or models at the time. That is a historical 2024 figure, not a verified current catalog size.

- Limitless Creativity, Seamless Workflow: Explore over one million 3D models on MakerWorld and bring them to life with a smooth, unified workflow using Bambu Studio, Bambu Handy, and your FDM 3D printer, from design to finished print.
The number also does not necessarily represent 22 million original works created by Thangs users. An indexed catalog can include duplicates, versions, externally hosted content, and models that are not available for download or commercial use. Catalog size is therefore a measure of searchable inventory, not a direct measure of creative output or legally usable assets.
Who uses Thangs?
The reported audience includes 3D designers, animators, makers, 3D-printing enthusiasts, professional users, and fans of creator communities. GamesBeat cited creators and public figures including Felicia Day, ForgeCore, and MakeAnything, but those examples should not be treated as representative of the entire user base.
The platform sits between several categories:
- 3D marketplaces: places where creators sell downloadable assets.
- Creator storefronts: subscription and membership platforms built around individual artists.
- 3D-printing libraries: repositories focused on printable models and maker communities.
- Portfolio and visualization services: platforms where artists present interactive 3D work.
- Professional data systems: private CAD, PDM, PLM, procurement, and engineering repositories.
Thangs’ reported differentiator is not simply that it hosts 3D files. It is the attempt to make the underlying geometry a primary discovery and comparison layer while connecting that layer to creator monetization.

The same geometric-search idea has applications beyond consumer model discovery. Physna has positioned its enterprise technology for engineering, industrial design, procurement, manufacturing, parts identification, duplicate detection, assembly comparison, and government logistics.
Earlier company material said the technology could work with assembly files from multiple platforms and show relationships among assemblies, subassemblies, and components. It also said Physna’s customers included the U.S. Department of Defense and Fortune 100 companies in aerospace, automotive, manufacturing, medical, and robotics. Those statements come from Physna’s announcement and should be understood as company-reported corporate context.
For an enterprise buyer, the relevant question is not whether a consumer community has millions of users. It is whether the current enterprise product can securely search the company’s own data and fit existing workflows. Evaluation should cover:

Funding and corporate context
GamesBeat reported that Physna had raised approximately $82.9 million in total funding, including $6.9 million in 2019, $20 million in early 2021, and $56 million in mid-2021. A January 2021 announcement said Sequoia Capital led a $20 million Series B, with Drive Capital participating, bringing total funding to $29 million at that point.
Funding supports the scale and commercial ambition of the company, but it should not be confused with Thangs revenue, profitability, or creator earnings. The consumer platform and enterprise business may reinforce each other technologically while still having different customers, sales cycles, and economics.

What the milestone actually shows
The strongest conclusion is narrower than “Thangs is now the world’s largest 3D platform.” Physna says Thangs crossed a substantial audience threshold, and the reported growth suggests that geometry-aware discovery resonated with at least a large volume of people searching for 3D assets.
But the milestone does not independently establish the current size of the community, the quality of engagement, the number of paying users, or the typical income earned by creators. It also does not prove that Thangs is superior to every marketplace, printing library, portfolio service, or professional CAD system.
Its more consequential idea is architectural: treat 3D assets as searchable geometry rather than merely files with names and thumbnails, then build creator subscriptions, model transactions, rights tooling, and enterprise search around that capability. Whether that becomes a durable business depends on verification, licensing clarity, creator economics, search quality, and the platform’s ability to serve both casual makers and organizations with sensitive engineering data.
